It looks like Mayo gave out more acceptances last week. My friend just got in. I wonder how many they have given out till now. Anyone willing to call???!?!

Wow, congrats to your friend. Can you tell us anything about his stats/qualifications?

Also, did anyone call to find out how many were handed out so far?

The way I understand Mayo's process is this... their meetings are broken into two parts... they rank everyone who does on-site interviews at meetings... hence the rank e-mail... then they review the people previously ranked at the last meeting. The top "4-5" people who knocked their socks off get accepted. EVERYONE else gets put on hold. I mean EVERYONE. Which is really only about 30 kids on top of the 30 each month that are already on the hold list. The hold email means you are just being pushed into the ever-growing large pool of applicants the adcom pulls from in the later months.

Now by the time mid-February rolls around if you do the math that means they have handed out roughly 30 acceptances (some to applicants who knocked their socks off, others from the hold list). Now from that point forward about 20-25 more acceptances are handed out to fill the remaining spots before the end of March. Then there are about 20-30 that are placed on a waiting list of which maybe 2 get accepted. This is the process verbatim told to me from a M2 at Mayo that I stayed with in early October for my on-site interview. I just wanted to share so that people are aware. Hope this helps everyone...

Good luck to everyone who has had on-site interviews! :luck: :luck:

I wouldn't mind an 8 am phonecall one of these days... so long as the caller ID shows "Mayo" 😀 Glad this thread's here to keep me posted (although I think my subscription to it gets backlogged and only shows up in my email every blue moon)

What do you think the committee looks for to selesct a coherent class? They put a lot of emphasis on how they select a group of students who fit together - but what does this mean exactly?

bumping simply because i love this thread

Here is to hoping 2007 brings acceptances for us SDNers to Mayo WITH full ride 😀

:luck:

Amen! Everytime I see this thread bumped my heart skips a beat I swear! Happy New Year to you all - we're going to med school this year!

Happy New Year Mayo lovers!

Okay, I tagged but no one called for an update. I went last but I will go again if no one else does. I just feel better when I have more information. Do you think they will start pulling people form the hold list by Feb? As I type this, it is warm and sunny outside but I would trade it in a heartbeat to be snowed in at Rochester!

Yeah, I get so nervous/excited whenever I see this thead.

So did anyone get a feel for what Mayo is looking for this year? What type of student?

Also, when do when does Mayo let us know their final decision?

I'm crossing my fingers for next cycle! Congratulations to those who got in!

And how many have gotten in (to the MD)? Last I checked it seemed that 6 spots were taken with some from last year

just had my phone interview. totally blew it!! 🙁 i was so nervous and my phone (not even a cell) ran out of batteries and the lady said it was static-y. oh well, it was worth the try.

Man, that blows that the battery died and there was static. I can honesly say that the worse the phone interview felt, the more likely a person was to get an onsite interview. So don't worry.

haha according to you, i'm 200% guaranteed for an onsite interview. thanks for the words. 👍 this is one school where the more i learn about it, the more i fall in love with it. 😍

good luck everyone!!!

I would call if I were brave enough. Whenever I call med schools I start to stutter and freeze up. It's pathetic, I know, but I resolved to not call anymore since I make an huge fool of myself everytime and they never understand a word I'm saying. Anyone else out there with a little composure willing to make the call?

Yeah if that's the case I shouldn't be waiting for an email, they would have been able to tell me before I hung up the phone. Well, you sucked. Like really, really bad. Seriously though, that was the worst we've had. See you in about 2 weeks?

How long ago did you do your phone interview? I had to wait a while between my phone interview and onsite. Don't give up hope yet.

I think I did it on the 20th or so, so not too long ago. I think I'm still waiting because when I did it, I didn't have my letters in yet. Then my undergrade school told me that Mayo did not accept letters electronically (right after I got off the phone with Mayo saying that they preferred them electronically). Anyway, I overnighted them but they probably got sent out the 21 and recieved like the 22 so I wasn't expecting to hear back from them. I was just poking fun at my stuttering stammering rambling phone interview.

(and here I thought my people skills would be one of my advantages during this application process)

I guess I'll be the one to call. I don’t mind; Jane is nice. The adcom meets on the 4th so I really want to wait until after that or I'll just be tempted to call again. It's going to be hard to keep myself from calling though...

Let us all know what she says. Will be much appreciated. :scared:

well, er.......... thanks? 😕

I'm a 3rd year at Mayo and would be happy to answer anyone's questions as best I can. Mayo is a great place to study medicine with amazing facilities, superb classmates, outstanding clinicians, and fascinating patients that will teach you a great deal. Feel free to PM me with questions, as I don't check this forum that much.

I was told some story about Mayo being named after some sort of Mayonaise case or somethign. Is this true?

Hi Bosco,
Can you tell us a little bit about how your admissions process went? Do you have any sense for what made Mayo choose you? How and when did you receive your acceptance?
Thanks!

Tomorrow's the first meeting of the year. Good luck everyone.

Yeah, fingers very crossed. Does anyone know when the good news call would arrive? Do they call the night of the meeting? The next morning? Some completely random moment you can't predict?

Good luck to everyone. Maybe tonight is our night.😀 :luck: :luck: :luck:

I think they call on Fridays, but due to scheduling it may be later. The last time I called (Mon I believe) Jane was just getting the call list because she had been out. Who knows...I'm not holding my breath (but my fingers are still crossed 😉 ).

Did any SDN-ers get in this year? It would be cool if they could post some of their admission experiences on this thread. Or maybe once you're in at Mayo you never need to log on to SDN again cause you're totally set in every way and worried it will just sound like bragging. Well, come on back anyway and tell us about it. We won't get too jealous. I think. Ha.

I can't seem to remember....some schools accept more than the number of student based on expected matriculation numbers. Do you know if Mayo actually accepts more than the class size based on the assumption that some students will turn it down? Or are there really only 20 (or however many) spots left? :scared:

im in a dilemma, and maybe ppl here can provide input ---- or maybe me just typing here will help me think things through....

........ despite mayo being rolling, since the chance of being put on the hold list is so extremely high (it seems), does it really matter how early you interview? -esp now since theyre pretty much lookin at late january / february onsite interviews....... does jan 29 vs. feb. 16 really make a difference for onsite interviews? (do ppl know how often the committee meets? would it really matter if i went late january or mid february (would i be looked at at the same meeting either way?)

i tried to schedule an onsite interview today, but i told her id call back when i felt more comfortable about picking a specific day..... .the days she mentioned all conflict with a lab class i need for my major.... im already missing 1 day (out of 7 days) and i cant miss a 2nd for mayo...... so I really want to interview after the lab ends (mid-february) ---- and personally, im thinking the chance of me being put on the hold list is soo high regardless of when i interview (since that's what's happening to so many amazing applicants ive seen here), i dont know if i wnat to miss another day of the class.... unless it really really really for some reason really increases my chance of not being put on the hold list and instead offered an acceptance...

sighhhhhh, any thoughts about a late jan vs. mid feb onsite interview?

In response to the above post.

1. I interviewed mid febuary, got put on the requisite hold list and escaped on april fools day. Just about everyone I know got put on hold at some point even those who interviewed late, it is darn near impossible to avoid.

2. You are a last term senior...skipping a day of lab isn't going to kill you...let senioritis take hold, I mean for pete's sake most of my classmates here will tell you they missed all kinds of class during senior year for interviews...and towards the end of the year because we possibly had a little too much to drink the night before. If you've got an MMS on-site you are going to pass your class and graduate, and no one will revoke an acceptance for gasp...a B...enjoy the rest of your senior year, you'll regret doing so once you get to medical school...that goes for everyone out there.

3. Don't postpone interviews to schools you really want to go to...get in there and get yourself on the rank list...this entire process is an odds game, the kid who interviews first has a shot at 34 slots and stays on the list, the person who interviews in feb. has a shot at maybe 4-6 and then it is waitlist city. Give yourself every advantage and interview ASAP...

Just received the ranking email....

Does anyone know whether the phone interview score contributes to your overall ranking? Just curious; thanks!

What day did you interview kmrake??

I thought they had reviewed people from 11/27 already. Guess they were behind. I know melissaind interviewed on 11/27 too and got the rank and then hold emails before winter break.

i'm not sure; i do know that she called prior to receiving her emails though and they said that we'd be reviewed on 1/4/07--I think she was surprised that she had been reviewed sooner

Yes, that is true. It was an suprisingly early decision for her. Well, I interviewed 12/8 so I have a while to wait. Sick of waiting. 🙁 Do they meet every Thurs or every other? I can't remember...

I don't know, to be honest--I think Melissainsd probably knows, though!

I interviewed 12/1 and some of the people from my interview group have been ranked, but I have not. hmmm. waiting is hard!

tch001 - How do you know some have been ranked?

tch001 - How do you know some have been ranked?

i've kept in touch with 2 of the people i met on my interview day and they've both been ranked and put on hold.

Hmm...am I in danger of being known as the girl that stalked Mayo? I interviewed with kmrake but I guess they were in a hurry to place me on hold 😕 .

Anyway, I just got off the phone with Jane. She is seriously the nicest admissions person I have ever spoken with. She said they gave out about 9 more spots at the end of Dec. Add that to the 5 they gave before, the 2 deferred, and the 2 omfs spots and 18 spots have been given out. That was the exact number she gave me. She also said that everyone on hold is not re-reviewed each month. Only the top 15 or so ranked have their files looked at again.

Every time I speak with her I want to go even more...sigh. Oh well, god luck to all!

I guess it looks like they've been getting through the second half of an older interview group and the first half a the next interview group each meeting. I had expeceted them to do the entire interview group on one day, but I guess they have been behind...? Did your friends get the emails last night? Or today?

General question...once a ranked email is received, is a hold email pretty much inevitable? If someone gets the next-day phone call acceptance, do they not first receive the rank email?

keep hangin in there guys. Mayo's admissions process is LOOOOOONG. Try not to interpret the "rank" "hold" emails. Everyone gets them. The only way your not going to get them is if you get admitted right away the first time the admissions committee reviews your app post interview. Its a rarity!

Thanks. It's hard not to overanalyze things. Especially when there's still the hope of magically getting in withouth waiting forever. It seems too that a fair number of spots have already been given out without holding (5 -7 or something isn't a high number, but there are so few spots to start with that it is a higher percentage). I'll try to take your advice not to panic. 😳
