This year they are screening really tough for phone interviews. In years past they only had given out 300 phone interviews. Last year was an exception (they gave out about 600)!!!! This year they are givin less again.

Anyways, if you get a phone interview, you have a great shot at an on site interview.

So this year they are screening much tougher based on your AMCAS. However I do know admissions office goes in order of checks received in terms of screening.

Admissions lady this morning says that they're giving out 400-500 phone interviews.

Doesn't it say on their website that they don't start looking at apps until they receive your money? Anyways, might as well put verification in for good measure.

My school sends the LOR to all the med schools I designate all at once. So my letters to Mayo were in before they requested it. When I spoke to the admissions lady - she was not pleased that the instructions of NOT sending the LOR until requested was not followed. However, I explained to her how my school operates and how difficult it would be to go back and request one at a later date. She understood my situation and that was that.

Unless you have a compelling reason, I would stick to the instructions Mayo provides.

yeah, like y_marker was saying, they send you an email requesting a phone interview and the letters at the same time (this is a different email than the one about the check), you shouldnt send out the letters till then if you can help it.

I completed my Mayo phone interview this morning! It was pretty standard, questions were very similar to the earlier post on this thread. The lady was friendly and nice, but at the same time very standard and simply read through the structured questions. She said the maximum time limit was 30 minutes -- I went about 22-23 minutes. I dunno if that's a good or bad thing, who knows. It was overall a pleasant experience, and I feel I definitely worried about it more than neccessary. I'd advocate NOT preparing answers and doing too much prep work -- but I'm no expert.

The mayo lady told me my application is on hold until they receive my letters of rec -- which my effin physics and orgo profs are STILL holding up. They both said they would have them in a month ago....I'm about ready to strangle myself. I sent them both emails this morning after my interview, and plan on calling them later this week...hopefully they'll be in by friday.

one more thing I wanted to add. My best interview experiences have been where I can relate to the interviewer and the interview turns more into more of a conversation rather than straight question asking. Unfortunately, for the mayo phone interview, you're being taped, and the interviewer blatantly reads from a standard script, so it's much less interactive in that way.

I remember hearing that all their phone screens ask the same exact questions. I have a friend that got interviewed there last year and said that they asked him "Have you come to terms with your mortality?" or something like that. If you can find a thread about this I suggest preparing to answer the same questions as everyone else. Good luck.

Thanks brotha. All I'm going to do to prep for the interview is just look over the questions and run through the answers in my mind. What stinks is that there isn't any feedback during the interview, but oh well. By the way, approximately how many questions were there and how long were your responses - if you were to venture a guess.

Second...what kind of stats does Mayo look for? I consider myself to be a very strong applicant (4.0, 41, lots of extracurric and several awards) yet I just was notified that I won't even be asked for LORs or a telephone interview. I have received secondaries from every other school I applied to, including screeners like UCSF and UCSD, so I don't think it's something to do with my application being "arrogant" or anything (just predicting the common response).

I really was looking forward to Mayo, so I'm fairly pissed.

I consider myself to be a very strong applicant (4.0, 41, lots of extracurric and several awards) yet I just was notified that I won't even be asked for LORs or a telephone interview. I have received secondaries from every other school I applied to, including screeners like UCSF and UCSD, so I don't think it's something to do with my application being "arrogant" or anything (just predicting the common response).

I really was looking forward to Mayo, so I'm fairly pissed.

Judging from people's MDapps profiles it seems to be completely random. They DEFINETLY screen for something beyond GPA/numbers though, possibly clinical or altruistic work?

I had few EC's and limited clinical experience, so I'm guessing that was why they didn't pick me. And the research I have done was not medically related. I was really looking forward to Mayo also. If nothing else pans out this year, there is always the next...just need to improve on a few things if I can.
