I'll attest to this being a crapshot. I didn't think I had a shot at Mayo but they obviously say something in my application that they liked. I personally believe it was my EC and personal statement but I probably will never know.

If given the opportunity to attend Mayo, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

Quantum, you slam my argument, but then make sure to point out that we're not talking about SIU. That seems to indicate that you agree with what I'm saying on some level, that schools like SIU would take into account the reality of that student matriculating or not. I don't understand why the argument is such bs. What doesn't make sense about the fact that med schools only have limited number of interviews spots, and therefore its in there best interest to interview the people that they feel would realistically matriculate to their medical schools if they got multiple offers. Look, I'm not trying to get into a pissing contest with you. I was just trying to make chris feel a little better. If I offended anyone applying to or currently attending Mayo, then I apologize.

Answer me this. Assuming chris isn't lying and he really has a 4.0 and 41. Assuming he really has all this incredible research and clinical volunteering experience, then how in world did he not get a phone interview. You just said schools will go after the best candidates. How can you possibly be any better of candidate than 4.0,41, and solid ECs. You can argue that it was because he didn't shadow a physician (which seems meaningless since he did volunteer in hospitals) or that maybe his PS wasn't that good, but do you honestly believe either of those two things are true? We're not evening talking about an actual, live interview. At the very least, you'd think he'd pass the phone screen on numbers alone.

Maybe it was something in his personal statement that turned them off.....If as owenmichael says, they are looking for well-rounded students, then their decision criteria is not based on numbers solely.

agr285,
Thanks for the vote of confidence. I can't say the thought didn't cross my mind (that I was rejected because they thought I wouldn't go there) but it's weird because, like others say, Mayo isn't a mid-tier school (though you're right -- it's not a top 10).

To those who keep saying "it's not just numbers" -- I realize that. That's why I'm pissed; I feel I have more than "just numbers" going for me, but anyone who sees my numbers has a tendency to assume that I'm a monotone android of sorts. I have leadership positions, volunteer work, research, etc. And my personal statement was reviewed by friends, family, and an advisor, all of whom said it was good (and for what it's worth, Igot a "T" on the writing sample so my writing isn't of poor quality).

What irks me most about this is, let's say someone assumed I was just a walking number. Did they even give me the time of day to prove them wrong (look, if I'm named after a wrestler, I have to 'quote' him)? They didn't even REQUEST my letters or talk to me to see test if I had any personal skills whatsoever. If they interviewed me by phone or asked for my letters, then cut me from the program, I wouldn't be as upset. But the fact is, they had absolutely no basis for making judgements about my personal characteristics outside of numbers and a laundry list of ECs.

Now, I have nothing against Mayo cause life's too short for that, but I'm not going to accept an answer of "we look at more than just numbers."

Medical school is a match, not a prize to be won. Maybe Mayo felt you weren't a good fit for them. I don't know for sure but I am just throwing that out there.

ok so Mayo, aint a top 10, but let's get real, it might as well be one since its program is so unique and they give their student more opportunities than some of the "top 10" schools. In my list its in the top 5, its that damn good.

I really think that you (and it might end up happening to me) just got burned by Mayo, they look for particular stuff (specific stuff not necessarily something you can generically lump into a category) and aren't always looking at the numbers, in fact they might have a toss pile for people they dont like before they even looked at the numbers.

How long did you wait after Mayo receive your fee before you get the phone interview invite?

Thanks

How long did you wait after Mayo receive your fee before you get the phone interview invite?

Thanks

I don't think there is any order as to how they're doing it. I got the fee recieved email on 8/1 and have not heard anything (good or bad) yet, whereas others have gotten the phone invite or reject within a week.

Yeah, this is the crux of it.

Some folks who get no love from a med school feel it's because of sub-par stats and say "Hey! I'm more than a number!" Some folks have great stats and say "Hey! What's wrong with me?"

It's all very subjective. They need to whittle down the number of applicants they can pass on to the next level. Some do it by numbers, some do it by ECs, some do it by some mysterious "fit" they get a feel for based on numbers/ECs/Personal statement.

Regardless, you can't get worked up about it. Doesn't matter what criteria a school uses, they all use something.

When a person comes off as arrogant in his posts as our friend Chris does, I really have to be believe that that came through in the PS too. JMO.

Just finished the phone interview... actually almost ran out of time. I guess I was trying to support examples too much

good luck to those who still have to do it... it's not too bad

Maybe you're right and I'm an arrogant bastard. Well, if you can take my word for the fact that it doesn't show in my PS (and I'll be honest, I recognize why you think that based off my posts here), Mayo could have found out easily in a phone interview, or my LORs may say it. The thing that bothers me is that I didn't even get the chance to be rejected for being a prick. Hell, i'd take that over this, because then I would know what i was doing wrong.

But, I understand that I came off that way in my posts, and I apologize to anyone that was offended by it. Well, anyway, I apologize also for the thread being hijacked.

Any suggestions / words of advice for those of us who still have to take it? BTW, congratulations on being done with the phone interview.

dont prepare too much, but be prepared to think on your feet for examples. Be sort of mindful of time, I finished in about 25-30 minutes comfortably, but I did glance at the clock occasionally. Dont be too nervous, they just want to know more about you, and they already like you, thats why you have the phone interview!!:luck: :luck:

Unfortunately a ton of people -- the majority, actually -- will have no way to "prove" their worth to a particular school they apply to, and will never know why they got rejected. Really, with a school as idiosyncratic as Mayo I don't think you should take it personally. Given the time and manpower constraints they're under -- and the fact that they can only feasibly interview a small % of applicants -- do you really think they have any obligation to "let" you prove anything to them with interviews/LORs/etc.?

I actually respect a school that won't waste your time/money by making you fill out secondaries that will just end up in the trash can anyway. For whatever reason (that they probably won't tell you anyway), you're not what they're looking for. It's pretty kind to tell you that this early so you don't invest anything else (emotionally, financially, time-wise) in them.

And you didn't offend me, it's a natural reaction -- rejection sucks.😳

The thing that bothered me about Mayo isn't the rejection, it's the fact that they demanded another $75 from me to look at something I already paid $30 for them to look at, without giving any inclination as to how competitive or appropriate your application is. Not even a secondary statement that may reveal your compatibility.

Compare that to a school like Vanderbilt who does the exact same thing without mercilessly fleecing you for money. They do what Mayo does sans the $75 cover charge. I haven't even heard back from Vandy, and I may damn well be rejected, but at least I know they worked for my money.

$75 to LOOK at a primary application? What the hell did I pay AMCAS for?

Just be yourself like everyone else is saying. Use the questions at the beginning of this thread to get an idea of what will be asked and brainstorm an answer. Do not rehearse, because (1) the Mayo med student (owenmichael?) said that they may screen based on that, and (2) I can't see it working out well. The time was an issue for me only because I elaborated on certain questions that opened a door for me to portray what I wanted to portray as an applicant (diversity, past experience). However, this was probably unnecessary and meant more for the actual interview. So, in short, just relax and field the questions as they come your way. I don't think it's uncommon to be caught off guard by a question or 2, I had one I couldn't answer immediately but then a decent (not great) answer came to mind.

Good luck!

I've been complete almost everywhere since the beginning of August...my AMCAS was verified mid June.

Its so true that applying early helps, if not for actually helping your chances, but at least by reducing these painful wait periods.

Has anyone been invited for an on-site interview yet? I figured maybe, since some of you have had phone interviews several wks ago. Also, when are you phone interviewers scheduled for? Mine was originally for 10/10, but I'll be interviewing at another school that day. It was pushed back until 10/26 when I rescheduled. Stresses me out a little, since the woman on the phone wanted to remind me that it's putting me at a little more disadvantage since they have rolling admissions...

I had another interview the day they had initially scheduled for me. And yes, the lady was not pleased that I needed to change the date, however I told her why and that was that. I think my interview was pushed out several weeks too when I asked to reschedule. Not sure that how much this hurts me but I had already rescheduled the other interview and I wasn't about to call the other school for a 3rd reschedule.

We should be hearing from folks about on site interviews here pretty soon I imagine.

I had to reschedule mine TWICE, but the lady was really nice both times. The second time I rescheduled she actually gave me an earlier date than the one I initially had.

Two week selectives after five weeks of class reduces burn out, and lets you spend alot of your time out of rochester (and the country!).

I'm trying to read about these two-week "selectives" but I can't find any mention of it at all on the Mayo website? Could you or anyone else help me out?

I'm trying to read about these two-week "selectives" but I can't find any mention of it at all on the Mayo website? Could you or anyone else help me out?

Mayo implemented a new curriculum this year focused on making learning more interactive, reducing student stress etc...

WE have a block of classes (which is six weeks) followed by a two week "selective period". In our first block, we are taking molecular bio/genetics and histology. We have one exam at the end of this block (really makes you learn the material for real!).... After this, you get two weeks to do what you want, i.e. shadow a physician wherever, volunteer wherever, take a break if you need it etc... and then you start the next 6 week block. Not all blocks are 6 weeks, as I know that after our two week selective period during thanksgiving, we only have a three week "leadership block" followed by christmas break!

They should be updating the website soon with the "new curriculum." The website right now has the old curriculum on it (which involved going to lecture 6-7 hours a day every day of the week).
Currently, we got to class till 12 for three days a week. From 8-12 we have about an 1 and a half (maximum) of lecture, the rest of the time is small group discussion of clinical cases (which relates to concepts in our lecture and readings) or lab (depending on the day). The other two days of the week that we go till four involves a class from 1-4 that focuses on learning how to take patient histories, learning how to do physicals, working with standardized patients (this is alot of fun!).

Sorry thats the best description I can do... wnat more info, PM me or call Jane in the admissions office.

My opinion on the curriculum, its AWESOME. I've never been a big lecture or in class learner. But I find having small groups of 8 with a professor working with you for 2-2.5 hours is amazing. It really helps to have short lecture sessions, lab sessions, and small groups... changing it up makes focusing easier. Their average board scores last year was a 238, and that was using the old curriculum. They really believe that they can continue having the top board scores in the nation with this new curriculum while also making learning more enjoyable.

They _certainly_ screen for qualities beyond GPA/MCAT... The day after the Mayo invite I received a note from NYCOM (osteopathic) letting me know that I will not be able to continue in the application process without retaking Inorganic Chemistry. Very ironic.

I am concerned that I do not have a strong enough research background for Mayo. I really just want to work with people with metabolic muscle disease. Is that so much to ask? 😳

well I just got dumped by Mayo, I'm in a bit of a shock right now...time for an SDN tirade:

I just feel really ****ed. My family is from MN (this was obvious on AMCAS since both parents went to college in MN) and it was in equal standing in my top 5 choices. Obviously they just don't care about numbers or they wouldve given me a shot to prove myself in the phone interview. If I would've known Mayo was such a ***** to applicants who do community service instead of research (I did both but more research and my more meaningful experiences were in research and non community service type settings), then I wouldnt have applied, but they present themselves as such a research oriented school. I will echo previous posters who have lamented that Mayo seems quick to reject, especially without the phone interview or LORs to back up that decision. I think its ****ty that I didn't ever get that chance, but there's nothing I can do now.

I have an interview at Baylor on Friday, which is equally excellent and is in a much larger city with a climate more suitable for my lifestyle, so **** you Mayo, enjoy my $75 and have fun shoveling snow.

What do you mean by completely blew the phone interview?

I just had mine yesterday, and I feel the same way. I'm looking to get rejected soon, unless stressed, moody and incoherent are qualities they look for in an applicant.

Was anybody else bothered by the time limit? 24 questions in 30 minutes?!? And what's worse, she told me I was out of time after 25 minutes!

I had the opposite problem. Well, first off i had gotten sick the day before so my voice was pretty much gone. I sounded horrible. I was pretty nervous during the interviews so I talked really fast and that combine with a bad voice didnt help the situation. I think i got through 24 questions in like 15 min and that being generous with the time. I think i would had done better if i had not prepare as much for the interview. Knowing the question beforehand i felt really messed me up. In the end I hung up expecting this rejection.

Knowing the questions messed me up too, because it was impossible not to rehearse answers. Only, when I realized I was so short on time, I had to truncate all my answers, and just ended up sounding like an idiot. So not only did I sound rehearsed, I sounded poorly rehearsed. Completely unnatural.

i think im going to completly wing mine. i work best that way and it sounds like too much prep is a bad thing in this case

It odd but i really think winging it would be better, but yet be prepared... kinda of opposing ideas. I guess just be prepared as in any other interview where you would not know the question beforehand.
