As October 15th approaches, I can't get Mayo out of my mind! There have been a few threads started about Mayo recently, but I thought it'd be nice to have a general Mayo thread for support since the interview season has begun and some of us may be hearing some sort of decision in only a couple weeks. :luck:

To get us started, here's the link to last year's Mayo thread: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=307434

Reading last year's thread actually makes me a little bummed, since so many people don't find out until spring about their status, even if they interviewed early in the fall. Maybe we'll be lucky, and if they get those extra few MD seats approved they'll accept more students before December than they did last year? (Where's the "crossing your fingers" smiley when you need it?)

howd your interview go? i have an onsite there in a few weeks and was skeptical about the area. i enjoy dating heh .

I haven't even received a secondary invite/rejection yet, despite their claim to get to every app within a month of submission.😴It's been about 5 weeks for me.

My interview day was great - don't go in being skeptical, you can be that way afterwards if you have the opportunity to decide about going there! 😀 In my book, Mayo being Mayo trumps any of the drawbacks of Rochester. Anyway, regarding the interview day... there were about 7 or 8 people there the day I interviewed, and everyone was very nice (I think it really says a lot about the school when you see who else they ask to interview...). There's a fair share of walking, which I know some people in my group thought was a lot, so get mentally prepared for that I guess. Also, you have almost an hour of free time scheduled throughout the day to do whatever you want throughout the Mayo campus. While you can take the shuttle over to St. Mary's hospital, since you really can't go wandering into patient areas, I'd recommend spending your free time exploring the main campus. Plus, both of my interviewers were extremely nice people.

After your interview day, make sure you come back and let us know if they have passed the change to admit 50 students this year (all new MD spots, so there'll be 8 new MD seats if all goes well)! On my day we heard that they were trying to do this a couple times, and that they should know within another week or two, so I'd say that you'll definitely find out at your interview.

ahh I need a Mayo support group! I've been obsessed ever since my interview. They gave me the impression that the extra spots were all but a done deal (something like the CEO or the Dean had to sign off on them, then it was a go?). I was so psyched for the early interview, but yeah, last year's thread makes me depressed. I was trying to look through MDApps to figure out if earlier interviews had an advantage in the end (something about earlier interviews being given to people who are a better fit) but there aren't enough on MDApps to conduct even a semi-scientific poll.
I got my "you've been ranked" email last week... so nerve-racking! I read it like 5 times to make sure it wasn't a post-interview rejection (even though Mayo doesn't give those until Feb?).
Good luck everyone! Hope everyone gets a phone call from Jane in a week and a half!

I was there with xcgirl and it was the best interview day I have been to yet. I am anxiously awaiting October 15th... *crosses fingers* I went in skeptical about the tunnels but everything I saw made me want to go there. Good luck to us all!

Amazing stats you have! Did you have any "research?" How about clinical stuff?

When you write "no love" on your mdapps, are you saying you have been "rejected" from those schools (no secondary, or no interview?)...

No love at this point just means no interview yet. I would say I am a little weak on my research. I did two projects and got one pub but it was after I had submitted my primary/secondaries and to tell the truth I had sort of forgot about it so none of my schools know about my pub and I am kind of down on research so I am not sure that places like hopkins/harvard/stanford are really a good fit for me. For volunteer I did hospice, worked with kids developing educational goals in middle schools through a flight program, and I am a counselor for children whos parents are getting divorced. Clinical I would say is my hospice/ I did some shadowing.

After the Mayo interview I have sort of fallen in love. I am headed out to GW this weekend to check them out, and you never know I might see something that really clicks with me there but I have a dream call on Oct 15th firmly planted in my mind.

A) I love you for already trying to figure out via MDApps if interviewing early helps out at Mayo 😀

B) How long after your interview were you ranked? I interviewed a week after you did, so hopefully when you heard about being ranked can prepare me for when I might hear...

And a PS: Yay for a Mayo support group, this is great! Hopefully they will realize so many great applicants are in love with them and should be accepted right away 😍

Woohoo... still no word for me after being complete a month ago. I really hope I get an interview. good luck to everyone!

Oh man, the tunnels... It just seemed like everyone we met was amazing/super nice and the facilities were beautiful.
Do you think for sure they might be making some calls on that Monday? I'm so nervous!

Ha I don't know anything for sure in this wacky process. However, I do know that I want a call on Oct 15th haha. Heading into this process I wasn't really set on any school and would have been happy at any of them but now I am definately setup for disappointment which is scary.

I added Mayo last week, and got an email this morning asking me to call and let them know when I'm planning to take biochem. The woman I spoke with was exceptionally nice (Jane), and she said that she's sending the secondaries out to a bunch of applicants today, and she'll try to get me in that batch. She said my primary was already reviewed, and they just wanted to be sure I intend to take biochem. I asked if I was late, and she said absolutely not, and that there were still a ton (heh, I'm sure that's all relative) of invites to give out. I asked what the timing is like post-secondary, and she said that they usually try to notify applicants of invites within a week of their secondary submission, but they're a bit backlogged so it's more like two weeks now. Pretty quick if you ask me! I don't know if they have pre-interview holds or the like, so if you don't get the invite within two weeks of submitting your secondary I have no idea if that means a rejection or a hold. Sorry I didn't think to ask just now.

Good luck everyone!

What is the exact biochem req? Is it a single class? How about the separate lab that goes with it? I want to take a biochem, but I just can't see doing a year of it, with labs, with my already bursting schedule...

It's just one course of biochem (one semester). I'm not sure if the lab is required or not, but I took it.

Course Requirements
The following courses are required prior to admission:

One year of biology and/or zoology (with lab)
One year of inorganic chemistry (with lab)
One year of organic chemistry (with lab)
One year of physics (with lab)
One course in biochemistry

http://www.mayo.edu/mms/md-prerequisites.html

It says "prior to admission" above, but per Jane, it really means "prior to matriculation." She said that they'd need a transcript by the end of July 2008 showing the course had been completed. I told her I'd be completing mine in the first summer session, which should end around mid-July. She said that was fine.

Do you offhand know of any other schools that require it, and if a single course in it suffices? I just have not gotten to this point in researching schools...

Also, any other "odd" requirements for any of the national schools (not some psych req I have read about at Illinois, but more "mainstream" schools that OOSers are more likely to apply to...)

Thanks!

Just grab an MSAR book and look up the schools you're interested in, or go to their web sites and click on admissions. They pretty much all have a "prerequisites" page. I avoided applying to any schools that require math or calculus, so if you go to my mdapps you'll see a list of schools that don't require calc. Similarly, none of the schools I applied to require biochem (1 semester) except Mayo and University of Southern California. USC also has a molecular cellular bio requirement, I think. And in addition to psych, I think UIC might also have an upper level bio requirement. Good luck.

And anyway, this is a MAYO thread. Stick with the program! 😀

You sent your AMCAS app to them last week and their sending you your secondary this week?

Mayo added to AMCAS on 9/26, and I received the payment request around 1:30am on 9/27 and paid it right then and there in bed (heh). Jane said I should be receiving the secondary today. She said that they're really quick about reviewing AMCAS primaries, and that mine was already reviewed. I'm really sorry if you submitted yours awhile ago. 🙁 I would agree that doesn't look good, but maybe you're on hold for later consideration?

Does anyone know how selective Mayo is with sending out secondaries? And what the numbers are like for how many secondaries and how many invites go out? I'll see if I can find those figures on USNews.

All I could find was this:

In-state
Applied: 325
Interviewed: 63
Accepted: 16
Enrolled: 12

Out-of-state:
Applied: 2,544
Interviewed: 266
Accepted: 54
Enrolled: 31

I'm assuming the "applied" figures are how many secondaries were submitted (does anyone have the MSAR statistics handy to compare?). If that's right, for OOS, there's a 10% chance of receiving an invite after submitting the secondary. And about a 20% OOS acceptance rate post-interview. However, I believe these might be 2005 statistics.

On second thought, maybe those "applied" figures are primaries? I really would think that more people than that would apply to Mayo, but it does seem odd that they screen and would send out over 2,500 secondaries. Especially for a class of 40 or 50. Thoughts?

Hello all, I feel privileged to post on this thread! (mayo!!)

well I am trying to schedule interview for mayo.

Between monday and friday available openings which one do you guys recommend??:luck:

They didn't have written secondaries before this year. They, instead, conducted phone interviews with around 500 applicants. I'd have to assume those numbers are for primaries.

I'd recommend interviewing on Friday and staying an extra night (going back on saturday). I had a tough time getting home on Friday night due to weather/airline problems.

I submitted my mayo secondary about a week ago & have not heard back that they recieved it... Did ya'll get a confirmation, & if so... how long did that take?

If that's true, then perhaps they send secondaries (the equivalent of the phone interview last year) to about 500 applicants, and interview around 250. That's not bad odds at all post-secondary for an interview! Dare I hope that's the situation? Then again, 50 accepted out of 250 interviews is still pretty dim. I guess I'll cross that bridge if I even get the interview. Congrats to the rest of you who have, and good luck!

When I interviewed, they said they might interview a few more this year because of the lack of phone interview, but it's not for sure.

Good, a support group for my Mayo obsession. I left my interview just dumbfounded by how spectacular the entire Mayo system is. It has been my number 1 for a while so I was a little worried that I had built it up to be something that it was not, but it was completely the opposite. Mayo was everything that I had thought it was and more.

I called Jane to update her on something two days ago (the day after my interview I found out my paper was accepted for publication) and she said they are scoring students today so those who have already interviewed and have not gotten a score email yet, you should tomorrow.

Add me to the list of people obssesed with Mayo! I interviewed there last Friday and while I expected it to be pretty great, it truly blew me away beyond any sort of expectation I had for it! The facilities, faculty, med students, and everything else about it were amazing and I am definitely crossing my fingers for all of us who have fallen for Mayo to hear some good news soon (October 15th would be awesome). It is kind of scary though to think right now at this moment they are talking about and ranking all of us who interviewed over this past week (again, I am crossing my fingers for us :luck:).

Also, I agree that interviewing on a Friday and staying until Saturday is best. That is what I did and it was great because I got to spend time with my student host and the other first years on Friday night (stress-free since the interview was over) and felt like it really helped me get to know the students and type of students that Mayo likes a lot better. I think that the type of students a school attracts is one of the most important factors for deciding on a med school (you have to go somewhere where you will get along with the people) so I found that extra time very helpful! Just my two cents... anyways, good luck to everyone and lets keep the support group going 🙂

Same here...it's been 5 weeks, and I haven't heard anything.😴Am I on some other stupid hold or something?

Thanks for the info! It'll be good to know that the process is moving along, even if I have no idea if it's good or bad for me yet!

On our interview day, Jane told us that there have been 4,000 applications this year. That 2,500 number must've been primaries, since I'm pretty sure past secondary numbers were always near 500. So this year, it looks like getting a secondary is even more exciting than in the past! 👍

I just got an interview invite (11:36 p.m. West Coast time...how weird is that) - I was complete 9/24. So excited!

Now I just have to figure out how to get to Rochester, MN...any advice, for those of you who have already gone?

Yay 😍

Fly into minneapolis, take the Rochester Direct shuttle to Rochester. Don't get stuck in Minneapolis at 12:30am having to rent a car and drive and end up not getting in until 2am. Also, make sure your flight leaves plenty early because there are frequently weather delays. Fly back the day after your interview if you can so that you can spend some extra time there.
Congradulations to both of you! Mayo is so amazing! I'm counting down until 10/15 in case I might just hear something from Jane.

Yup, I have. It was a bummer. I got an email about it.

Congrats!! Haha, now I have a reason to check my email at night...

When you're flying into Rochester or Minneapolis, you probably want to book on Northwest rather than American (really, anything but American simply to avoid going to Chicago)...particularly as we get more into the winter months. Chicago has horrible delays and you really don't want to end up stuck in Chicago, missing your interview. Also, make sure to add in time for delays and weather, yes, it snows here, a lot.

The shuttle to Rochester is great, the only thing to keep in mind is that if it's really snowy (shouldn't be a problem until late Nov. on...usually)...traffic will be really slow and it might be a long slow drive. However, taking the shuttle does offer you a wider range of flights as there's only a few flights into Rochester everyday and you may end up waiting around at Minneapolis for a while...and missing your flight to Rochester may mean a long wait for the next one.

I got my secondary at 1:36 CST too (and I recall getting the fee request at 1:30am CST as well last week)! Looks like that's Mayo Standard Time (MST). I guess starting about two weeks after I submit my secondary I'll have to start staying up until 1:40 MST just in case.... Congrats to those of you that got invites!

And hey, lay off Chicago! At least until mid-December.... Then we definitely do have horrendous flight/weather delays, and deserve our bad rap.

Just an update: I got my email about being ranked this morning, exactly a week after I interviewed. So, for all of you who may wonder such a thing after your interview (even though you still have no idea if the ranking is good or bad), now you know 😀

is it cold over there yet?

well, it was in the 80s the past few days but I imagine that it's just indian summer and it'll get chilly pretty quick (think 40s-60s)

what does it mean to be ranked ...

so excited ... leaving to go to my mayo interview sunday morning!
