This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

just talked to marcy ... said rejections are coming out in a few minutes

I just emailed to ask, but if anyone else gets ahold of Marcy (I really don't feel like I can call again), can you please ask how many are on the waitlist? Thanks!

good luck guys! :luck:

I got the rejection letter.🙁

Updating and changing the list to reflect alternate status - hope we get a bunch more SDNers on the list! And I really hope that those of you that don't make the list get into alternate dream schools. :luck:😳:luck:

Only keeping acceptance dates in the list from this point out.

OMG!!! I just received the alternate list email too! congrats to everyone!! haha and phoenix - it's going to be another painful waiting period for us!! jsut when we thought it was all over...

I just got the alternate email. Congrats to everyone who made the waitlist!

Do anyone know if ALL alternate and rejection emails will be going out today? I am so nervous...I keep hitting refresh!

Rejected.

waitlisted as well

any more details on size of wl? when the most acceptances occur off the wl?

Alternate list. I have a feeling the alternate list is going to be pretty large for only ten to fifteen spots. But I'll gladly keep my hat in the ring if it means I get a shot at going to Mayo.

Seems from last year's thread that most waitlist movement was in May. No complaints here, but I guess my Costa Rica pre-med school vacation plans are off now! Need to be ready at the drop of a hat to move to Rochester. 🙂

Congrats again to those on the list - I wish all the SDNers here had made it.

Hi all. I have a been reading this thread for a while now. Congrats to all that got accepted and those who are on the waitlist. I also got the email for the alternate list. Good luck to you all.

Congrats, hopeful, and welcome to the club! :luck:

Thanks! It would be amazing to attend Mayo. I was in awe by the institution and the facilities.

it's good to know that after May i can pretty much plan on Mayo being game over

Got an expected axe from Mayo today. Not too surprised due to how badly I borked my 2nd interview

Good luck to the rest of you! And don't forget there's always the chance for a Mayo residency 4 years from now!

Despite your nickname, you are definitely not a reject, lamedonkey. Or anyone else that didn't make the list, for that matter. I swear, at this point, it's mostly luck. One more flap of a butterfly's wings could have meant a rejection for me and alternate list for you.

Does anyone know how many people were put on the alternate list?

Does anyone know how many people were put on the alternate list?

Not yet. Why don't you give 'em a call and ask? Pretty please? With sugar on top? I called twice yesterday (once I got Marcy but forgot to ask, and the second time I got someone named Curtis who had no idea), but I don't feel I should call again since I ended up sending an email yesterday asking how many were on the waitlist. But they've probably got a lot of emails and correspondence to go through today, and they may be waiting to see how many people "accept" the alternate list status before officially saying how many there are. But in past years not many declined alternate status, so I think it'll be relatively accurate if we can get them to give us a number.

Joining the alternate list (for better or worse)
I loved Mayo so much/would definitely go there if they let me in.
Any research-focused female athletes want to drop out?

WOW..just called ... about 100 people were put on the waitlist....about 300 were interviewed...
I think im just going to pretend like I got a rejection letter. haha. 🙂

Ack. That's what I feared. But I started to hope it'd be less because Curtis said he thought 100 sounded rather high, and doubted it was that many.

Yup, I'm now thinking I should count this as a rejection too. I guess we've each got about a 10-15% chance, but when you factor in that the space you're filling should be for someone similar to you, it makes the odds seem even worse.

it at least feels nice to know that they're semi-interested in you and perhaps in a different world at a different time it would have worked out (now it sounds like some lame reality tv show rejection a la the bachelor/rock of love).

I'm trying to not to think that way. I was all set and ready to apply to Mayo in early June, but a friend in med school (here in Chicago) talked me out of it, convincing me that I didn't have a chance in hell. In a moment of idiocy I unchecked the Mayo box on my primary as I submitted it, and in the end of Septemeber, when I realized it was my application money to throw away on my dream school, I applied - late. So now, if I think about it, perhaps I might have gotten in if I'd applied early. I only have myself to blame. Argh. Really need to stop crying over spilled milk. Nothing to do about it now. For another cliche, what's meant to be, will be.

But I really really really wish that they'd cut that waitlist in half. At least come the end of May.

Seriously?!?! 10-15% chance is about the same as getting accepted right off the bat. I'm not losing spirit until Juneish.

I'm just trying to psyche myself out so I'm not too devastated later on. But yeah, I'm also going to hold out some hope until June.

same here, come June i will prepare myself to purchase my home in a place other than Rochester🙁

Well, I received the rejection letter too. I feel that I fought a good fight. It's a tough pill to swallow though. Those of you who get in, cherish every minute of it.

LameDonkey, my fellow Weber State Wildcat, looks like we didn't get the chance to show them that we've got it.

Did you get a letter or email? I got the email and was quite taken aback. I only wished they wouldn't have stated on the subject: NOT SELECTED, so I could prep. myself for the news. Nonetheless, I'm really glad I got a good glimpse of Mayo. Wow, the place is awesome although I am not a big fun of the weather.

i got waitlisted too! took a break from SDN since i'm on spring break. not a great way to start spring break, but i'm glad i got to go shopping to forget my miseries.
not being accepted just makes me think that i must have blown it at the interview, cuz my other stats were good. but then again i was being myself at the interview, which means they didn't like the person i am!

anyone here feeling just a little insulted/surprised? i mean logically, the competition is way too high to question why we didn't get in the first time around, but i still can't help feel that way.

i assume a lot of us have been accepted at at least one school (state school). any thoughts on how long u will wait for an answer from mayo? may? july?

I emailed Marcy about 3 seconds after the alternate emails came out, asking # of alternates, and have not gotten anything back yet. ill post as soon as i do fo sho

Ditto - I did the same thing. Nada. I figure they're waiting to see how many "accept" the alternate status before sending an official number in writing. Or not.

You shouldn't fee insulted at all, or that they don't like who you are. I view the watilist (or alternate status) as saying that you're Mayo-caliber and a good Mayo-fit, but there just aren't enough spots for all of us. So, take it as the honor and compliment that it is. And hope for the best.

Realistically, I'm willing to hold out some hope until June 1. After that, I'll consider it a rejection, but not withdraw. It'll be what it'll be. And I feel it's a slim chance, but it's still a chance nonetheless. :luck:

goodluck everyone! i was rejected , wasn't really a good fit for the school though. so sad about my other waitlists ( nyu , cornell , ucla :*(

hope you guys find your dreams 🙂

If they had a 150 student class, we'd all be in!

If they had a 150 student class, we'd all be in!

i was thinking about that this morning. if mayo had a "normal" class size, we'd all be in! i guess the small class size is part of what makes mayo so special tho....

we can't have our cake and eat it too...

so no one got a confirmation for the waitlist?

Alternate list too. I'm glad to know my chances of getting in from the start weren't completely slim to none...

Good luck with the NY & CA schools! :luck:

If they had a 150 student class, we'd all be in!

Well, at least they increased the class size by 8 this year. That's 8 more people that could decline and open a spot for a waitlister! Trying for the bright side here.

so no one got a confirmation for the waitlist?

Well, I sent my alternate status acceptance via email the afternoon they went out, and also asked how big the waitlist is. Marcy responded via email today, simply saying: "To answer your question, approximately one hundred students have been put on the alternate list." No mention/confirmation of my alternate status - although obviously it's sufficient. Just doesn't seem like they're sending out any "official" confirmations - or at least not yet.

Is anyone who has been accepted planning on giving up their spot? Or is unsure?

BIG congrats to all of you folks who got into Mayo. Living in Rochester, I'm still in absolute awe of Mayo and all of its affiliates. Definitely my dream to make it there, although I'm a realist/pessimist at heart and I know I never will. Great job getting accepted, though, this is truly something most people will never get the chance to say in their lifetime.

yea my mom keeps saying something about april 15 but i really dont know and am a little confused--i kinda thought that was the last day to send in your deposit and written 'acceptance' of their acceptance..this is what is written in my initial appointment email--and anything that i later received by snail mail is somewhere (???) but not locate-able at this moment....

Please confirm your acceptance of this appointment in writing within 2 weeks. A $100 deposit payable to Mayo Medical School is required and should be sent it to 200 1st St. SW, Rochester, MN 55905. The deposit is non-refundable after May 15, 2008. Holding acceptances at other schools after May 15 may result in forfeiture of your appointment to the entering class and the Mayo Dean's Outstanding Achievement Scholarship.

Your final appointment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check. Pre-matriculation background checks are conducted on all students holding appointments to the school as of May 1 of each class year. Additional information regarding this matter will be sent to you later.

So I read on another thread that last year, mayo people had to decide by April 15th. Is that the case this year too?

Nice to see this thread again!

If I recall correctly (don't have time to look it up), April 15th was the initial deadline last year. However, as that deadline approached last year, I believe that they ended up extending it to the usual May 15th.

I think this year, they're really just following the May 15th final deadline regarding non-refundable deposits (although I'm sure they'd love to know sooner who's going to commit!). For those accepted already, I'd contact the admissions office to double-check. I'm assuming they just *need* to hear from everyone accepted so far that they are accepting the acceptance by April 15th (if someone, let's say, who was accepted in mid-March, has not yet accepted yet), but that the deposit does not become refundable until mid-May. Anyway, that's the best I can make of that.

So, mimi, you thinking of attending UCLA instead? I really enjoyed my three years at UCLA - spent my first year in Westwood and my last two in Brentwood. Can't beat CA living! Not that I'm trying to influence you or anything....

Can't wait for May to see who gets in off the waitlist!
