Ahh, I can officially be added to the list of Mayo-obsessed people. I loved my interview day. Everyone is so friendly and committed to patient care. As for wandering around Mayo, I liked seeing the Lego replica of the Plummer building on the 2nd floor (there's even Lego gargoyles with different faces! one of them looks like Yoda, hah) and I liked reading the guest comment logs in the 3rd floor historical rooms. The first year students were really fun & friendly as well. I think there's something so unique about Mayo compared to the other med schools/hospitals that I've visited. On my shuttle-ride from Rochester to MSP airport, there was someone who had been interiviewing for a residency slot at Mayo. Apparently she had done a rotation there as a student and really loved it. Despite getting a dermatology residency position somewhere else, she was looking for an internal med position at Mayo (probably other factors influencing her decision to not pursue derm, but she talked about how special Mayo was amongst all locations she had done rotations at). Mayo = wonderful!

So, caffeineaholic, did they tell you when you might be ranked, if there will be an adcom meeting this month, or confirmed whether it's 16 or 17 acceptances that have been given out to date? Inquiring minds and all that.... Oh, and welcome to the Mayo-obsessed, and good luck!

sorry, I didn't receive any updated information on any of that! I missed part of the orientation info session due to one of my interviews. I figured I could find that info out on SDN so I didn't iniquire about it specifically.

Hi Guys,

Got my rank email today. Anyone else??? I think I might die of arrythmia (spelling??). I interviewed on Nov 9. if that helps.😱

I know they said they were about 25 people behind in ranking when I interviewed on 12/7, but wow. I guess I shoudn't even anticipate a ranking for at least another month. Thanks for the update (and good luck!).

o wow!! thanks for letting us know--a ranked e-mail on a non-thursday...that means six more days for me to be all nervy----good luck with that yankeedoodle!!!

Pondering alternate thread titles because I simply can think of nothing better to do at the moment than daydream about Mayo and the long, long wait ahead:

Mayo 2008 Support Group
Mayo Anonymous 2008
Mayo On The Brain - 2008
Mayo Proposal 2008 - 'Til Rejection Do Us Part
Mayo 2008 - We Love You! Please, For The Sake of Our Sanity, Let Us In!!!

Anyone else? 😳

Ok, ok, I guess I should go do some work. But writing a chapter on choice of business entities in the U.S. for prospective Chinese businesses is just so uninspiring. Mayo, take me away!

"Mayo, No-One Loves You Like We Love You"

Coming back from my interview I was thinking that it's interesting how we were all in the same tiny airport (for the most part) and we probably met a lot of the same people (in admissions, and the M1s, and other students) and maybe went to the same bars and restaurants...

This school (and clinic!) really is amazing.

I went to the Canadian Honker (heh, interesting place...it's a restaurant type place, but it also seemed like there was a coffee shop part to it and I know that they have music there on some nights) Newt's, and Beatles (sports bar). How was Gilligan's?

The downstairs part of Gilligan's was your typical divey bar with pool tables and dart boards, and an ovular bar in the middle of the room. I had a lot of fun (and luck) playing electronic darts for the first time. All it was missing was a fooseball table (which I saw in the med student lounge at Mayo, which, by the way, is being completely gutted and will be all new next year). Although I was a little weirded out that right next to the bar there was one video game, and it was a hunting game with two attached rifles to the machine, and on the screen it depicted cute-looking innocent cartoon deer eating grass. Skeeved me out for sure. But I'm city folk, so maybe that type of video game is in bars all over the country! The upstairs of Gilligan's was a big empty room with mostly top 40s and some hip-hop playing. A very interesting mix of people, to say the least. And fun was clearly had by all.

I must say that compared to other schools I've been to, the first year class was skewed pretty young, and they definitely knew how to enjoy themselves. I've heard that other years were a little more diverse age-wise, and that Mayo used to be known for having a lot of married students in their class. I doubt they made a conscious effort to recruit direct-from-college applicants last year instead - probably just happened. I think they said that there are 8 students from Rochester proper in the first year class right now as well.

I am a first year hear at Mayo and just wanted to comment about the average age of the class and the married students. We actually fair well with the rest of the classes, with about three in their early 30s, and two to four in the mid 20s (24-27). Does not sound like much, but that is about 12 to 16% of our class. Also, there are about 6 married students in the class, and four who have kids. We also have students from Puerto Rico, Iran, Japan, etc... so Mayo managed to keep our class fairly diverse, even with 8 students from Rochester and a few more MN locals.

Thanks for that info.

Congrats to all who were accepted into Mayo so far this year. The institution truly is the mecca of medicine and places vast importance on the quality patient care and humanitarianism. An amazing school that certainly puts out some of the best doctors in the world.

Okay now that finals are over, I can come back to SDN. One life stressor at a time, thanks. Any news about Mayo? Should we be waiting for the new year for more acceptances?

Dunno. YankeeDoodle was ranked on 12/18, so it seems like they did hold another adcom meeting this month. But I have no idea if they made appointment decisions then (Jane had mentioned that five more might be given out before the new year if they're able to get an adcom meeting together this month), or whether they're going to have another meeting at the end of the month to do so instead. I guess we'll just have to wait for kind souls who get the call from Jane to post here. Good luck!

I don't think they made appointments cause I would've had to have been on hold🙁 or accepted😀 neither of which has happened.

next adcom meeting is in mid-January. So far, 12 have accepted and paid deposit, 4 have been accepted but not replied to Jane yet.

Shoot, I was hoping for another 5 acceptances before the New Year. Oh well. Guess I'll just have christmas dreams of Mayo.

FruBeak - Is this information straight from the lovely Ms. Jane herself? (Anything less is heresy 😀)

yeah, just interviewed there on Monday, so the info is recent...and straight from Jane.

Heresy or hearsay (or both!)? 😀

Lol. I stand by heresy...Mayo is my religion now...I wear white tennis shoes...and rejection results in me meeting the grand poobah on planet Omicron Percei 8.

Mayo has clearly made me insane.

Don't worry. You're not alone! 😳

And unfortunately, I'm finding that the more time passes, the more pessimistic I become about my chances. As if the likelihood could get any smaller.... Still, Mayo insanity is clearly preferably to Mayo depression. 😀

I don't think you should be more pessimistic. You were invited for an interview for a reason and you can get accepted for those same reasons!

I had a Mayo nightmare last night 🙁

I was dreaming about my interview, which in the dream (not in real life) turned into a stress interview towards the end, which I completely blew.

Soo glad to wake up.

I just wanted to thank you for the brief respite from constant anticipation. Much appreciated.

42/350. When some of the most competitive applicants in the country are being considered, it is an honor, although it does not make me very optimistic. But sometimes I like to look at it as 50/350, since invariably some people will decline (crazy (wonderful) people). So, I guess I'm looking at a 10% chance on a pessimistic day, and a 15% chance on a more optimistic day.

Glad to know I'm not then only one with Mayo dreams. Hopefully your next one will be a dream and not a nightmare. Although I don't know that I recommend it. When I woke up from my acceptance dream, I felt a lingering sense of sadness that it was but a dream.

But while the days go very slowly, I do get the feeling that we will find out our fates soon enough. What's a few months in the scheme of things? Or perhaps that's just my momentary perspective. I've been going through boxes stored in my parents' basement today, looking through my notebooks, year books, poetry/drawings(?!?), etc. from 1983-1992. And I was really shocked that I don't even remember putting much thought into applying to college at all (this was back in 1991 or so), and yet I found notes in my daily calendar with lists of schools, their rankings, percentages of acceptance, etc. Guess I haven't changed all that much over the years. Although I do seem to have lost my knack for drawing and writing poetry, and my handwriting has completely gone to hell in a hand basket.

Bygones.

Phoenix, I think 50 is the new class size for next year...

I could be wrong, but isn't it 50, with 6 of the spots MD/PhD, and two MD/OMS (for dentists)? Thus, 42 MD spots. I think this was discussed some pages back. And last year, I think it was 42 total, meaning 34 MD spots. But if the number they're interviewing, 350, includes the applicants for the 8 non-MD slots, then I do see that my calculations were nevertheless incorrect. Hrm.

It's 42 MD only spots this application cycle...not counting MD/PhDs or the OMS...they apply and interview separately. Last year was 42 total (counting the MD/PhDs and the OMS guys).

when i interviewed, i think jane said they were interviewing a little more than 250... something more like 275 though... not 350. hope i didnt hear wrong

She said around 350-375 when I was there.

I was told they were going to interview more this year because there were no phone interviews.
Ahh I want Mayo so badly! Just sent them a LOI and an update letter.
Any clue when the last interview date/when they let most of the class know is? I know the last date is sometime in February so I'm guessing they let most people know in March?

When I interviewed in the beginning of December Jane said they'd be interviewing around 350 applicants this year (up from about 250 last year). She mentioned that the caliber of applicants really went up this year, so they're interviewing more (and added to that, they increased the class by 8 spots).

Also, per Jane, they fill the class by mid-March (they've only given out 16 acceptances so far, so that means at least 26 more to give out by then (or more if some people decline right off the bat)), and then they send rejection letters or waitlist status (via email I believe) to the others. I think in past years anywhere from 60-80 people were put on the waitlist.

And I'm with you xcgirl. I sent Mayo a love letter too.

Merry Christmas my fellow Mayo-lovers! Hope the new year brings lots of acceptances and Mayo love <3

[I'm sitting around waiting for the grandparents to arrive.]

Wow this thread has alot of people really in love with Mayo.

I think it is actually better than this if you are considered at an earlier appointment adcom meeting (aka rolling admissions). Could be wrong, haven't taken math in a while.🙂

hi friends,
i interviewed on 12/3 and someone i interviewed with got in touch with jane and told me that according to her there are ~20 ahead of our group yet to be ranked--the next adcom meeting is jan 3--and so it will prob be ~late jan before our intvw group hears anything...

gluck and happy almost new years !

Hello Mayo peeps. I was ranked on 12/18 (interviewed on 11/9).
Hope the holidays are going well for everyone. Here's to a new year filled with Mayo acceptances for everyone! :luck:

hey do u guys know ... is it common for people who are on hold to get accepted before they send out waitlist and rejections in march???

argh .... mayo ur killing me!!!

Yes. Frick was put on hold on 10/23 and accepted 12/6. It definitely happens. If you're on hold, you've got just as much of a shot as anyone else at each adcom meeting where they give out acceptances. They basically give out a couple of acceptances each time to the top ranked applicants. An applicant that has a really high ranking may get an acceptance at the first adcom meeting they're considered at. If so, they will have been accepted without having been passed over once (which is the equivalent of being put on hold). However, you could be put on hold, and get accepted at the very next meeting.

Hello all my fellow SDNers,

I just discovered this thread and I herby join the MMS support group. I have an interview at MMS in mid February. My BPCM is not too hot and MCAT-32, but I am amazed to be offered an interview.

How important is GPA? There are so FEW seats. I would love to go here. What is this amazing school looking for in candidates?

Welcome to the support group! If you've got an interview, they think your gpa is okay. My gpa/BCPM are not too hot (3.36, 3.26) but I guess they didn't mind? Just make sure you can answer the "why is your gpa low" and "are you prepared for med school?" questions. Good luck! It's awesome there!
