Welcome to the thread - but watch out, it's addicting 😀

I'm pretty sure that Mayo is looking for that je ne sais quoi in their applicants... they really work hard to have the perfectly formed class, and want people with lots of passion for whatever they have pursued (in your ECs and academics).

My advice is to show up on your interview day prepared to talk about your application with enthusiasm, have great reasons why Mayo is the place for you, and to be yourself. (Sorry, that last one was a little cheesy) Good luck and enjoy your interview day! :luck:

Ummmm.....I'm assuming you got a pre-interview rejection from Mayo and then got an acceptance today from a different school. But for a second there, I thought you meant you had already interviewed and got both rejected and accepted from Mayo today. Silly reading of your post, I know.

Anyway, I'm so sorry about Mayo, but congrats on your acceptance! I hope it's somewhere you can see yourself fitting into. I know the majority of us will be shedding Mayo tears come March as well. I'm starting to think of it as Mayoland (i.e., Neverland - a dream world).

Ok, so I expect all of the Mayo-crazed unranked November interviewees to be up at 1:30am CST tonight watching their inboxes and ready to post on SDN if they get their ranking email. 😀 Unless, of course, Jane doesn't enter the rankings until tomorrow from today's meeting. Hrm.

I think it's variable how many they rank per meeting, and I have no idea what the "usual" number is. Mimi had mentioned in a previous post (on the last page) that another interviewee she knew from 12/3 called Jane last week and learned that there were still 20 people to be ranked before their interview group. Mimi thought that those who interviewed in early December thus might not hear back until later in January.

But seeing johnbeck's post could mean anything. Either they made great progress in the meeting today and pretty much finished ranking the November interviewees, or perhaps some interviewers weren't around, so they jumped to johnbeck on his 11/30 date. According to Jane both of your interviewers have to be present in order for you to be ranked, so they don't necessarily go strictly by interview date all the time. Can you tell I just had a glass of wine? I'm definitely rambling. Think I'll stop while I'm ahead....

ranked e-mail came this morning at 5:30am PST. i interviewed on December 10th...so maybe they got through a lot more than expected! or i got lucky and both my interviewers were there. good luck everyone!!
 
ahh, i know this sounds lame and paranoid...but now i'm worried that maybe they just came to a decision quickly, like "wow, that she was TERRIBLE". man, mayo is seriously driving me insane. this thread is my support group 👍
 
No, they just rank you based on order if you're interviewers are there. I imagine it's hard for the 4th year student interviewers to make a lot of these meetings b/c they're having interviews of their own for residency.

Nah, I'm SURE that's not it. But I think we're all Mayo-crazy at this point, so doomsday fears are par for the course. (Btw, gobears, are you from Chicago?)

So, I just called Jane. She said that they got through ranking 11 people yesterday. She confirmed that every once in awhile they go a little out of order based on who's at the meeting. I interviewed on 12/7, and she said that there were 18 people ahead of my group to be ranked. She said that they'll get through about 10-15 people at each meeting, and that they're meeting every Thursday this month to do rankings. They have not yet given out any additional acceptances, and Jane said it will probably be later this month once they've gotten through more files (since they're so behind because they had three weeks off for the holidays). And she said she's really busy today with 11 interviewees. Ok, I hope that gives everyone else their much needed Mayo fix! And now it looks like I'll be watching my inbox at 1:30am the next few Thursday nights....

i live in northern california where the huge storm is right now, and the power just went out in my lab for a split second. that was slightly terrifying -- every alarm started going off and there are no windows, so it was pitch black!

So I was talking to a doc at my local teaching hospital about Mayo and he said that since Mayo gets a lot of private patients, the med students and even residents don't get a whole lot of autonomy in patient care. Has anyone else heard something similar?

I'm not sure what exactly you mean. Technically, Mayo IS a private practice, unlike a typical teaching hospital so the interaction may be a little different. Mayo has their own way of doing lots of things though, that may seem different to other places. I'm not sure how much autonomy you really ought to expect to have as a med student though, I mean you're just learning and you're not a doctor yet, so there's not much you can do on your own without someone supervising at a minimum.

The adcoms meet every Thursday. It appears to be highly variable when they decide to hand out more acceptances (i.e., there are no set dates or time frames), but per Jane, there will be more given out some time later this month. I remember in December they said that five more acceptances would go out by the New Year, but that never happened. So, whether they'll give out those five later in January, or more than five, no one knows. But they've only given out 16 so far, and they'll have to have given out at least 42 by mid-March.

As for how long it takes post-ranking, that all depends. When you're ranked you're given a number between 1 and 5 (5 being the highest). According to that number you are inserted into the ranked list. When the adcom meets to give out more acceptances they tend to take the top applicants off of that list (but it may not be strictly in order due to their attempt to create diversity in the class as well). I've heard of people who got accepted right after being ranked and never got the hold email, as well as people who got the hold email and waited only one month or many months. It just depends.

And come March 15th, if you don't have an acceptance, you'll either get a waitlist email or a rejection. :luck:
 
Who is the Associate Dean of Admissions? I'm confused. I know Dr. Lindor is Dean of the whole med school and Dr. Barrier is Associate Dean of Student Affairs...
 
I just interviewed at the Mayo. It was a very cool place. I put it in a class of its own compared to the others.

While there I had an interview while the rest of the interviewees went to lunch. I went to lunch with a first year named Rachel. She was cool. Come to find out later, she is the daughter of the dean. She's tricksy.

About autonomy....to be honest folks make a lot of assumptions but unless YOU have actually rotated through Mayo or are a medical student/resident you have NO idea about the reality of those assumptions. Mayo is a *phenomenal* place to train either as a medical student, resident or fellow. There IS enough autonomy (according to your training, a medical student will have a different set of rules than a resident) and the teaching is top notch. Patients here have NO issues (even though many are coming from thousands of miles away to see a Mayo specialist) with medical students or residents/fellows taking care of their needs. Obviously YOU are supervised by a resident but there should be NO concern from any of you that autonomy at Mayo is limited, because it is NOT. I have been given enough autonomy where I feel that I am learning but never felt overwhelmed. So, again unless YOU have actually been here and SEEN this yourself do not believe everything you hear.

I met her too - very nice. And I wouldn't worry about it. I've heard that the med students who take you to lunch don't weigh in on the interview process (unless, of course, you did something truly horrendous), and I'm sure Rachel wouldn't say anything other than a positive if there was any discussion about you anyway. But welcome to the thread, and the typical post-Mayo-interview paranoia. It sure is an amazing place! 😍 And I see you got the lingo right. I'm still referring to it as "Mayo" rather than "The Mayo." I'll have to work on that and send them an update when I get it down pat.

Actually, I believe it is just "Mayo Clinic" rather than "THE Mayo Clinic". While it seems more intuitive to say "the" (since could there ever be another?), when I wrote my personal statement and used the term "the Mayo Clinic" (as I've worked there 3 summers), I was corrected by people who knew better!

So, Phoenix, don't change your lingo, you have it right 👍
 
Yes, technically it's just "Mayo Clinic", kinda like how you wouldn't say "the Harvard"...but, I've heard people say the clinic or the mayo clinic (maybe in reference to mayo versus some other clinic or something)...but I don't think I've heard anyone use just "The Mayo" without referring to some thing, building, method, etc.

Cult that it is, there's probably been a decision on the proper way to say it and all...they're big on that...even if they're the only one to go along with it.
 
I figured it was the regional lingo. I've met a couple of people (here in Chicago) who are from Minnesota and they all say "The Mayo." But I've had a hard time calling it that. How bout we all just call it The Clinic? I mean, there can only be one. 😎

It used to be The Ohio State University. But now it is just Ohio State after the last two BCS Championship games. Humility is good. So, everyone, get some humility. If you don't have any, life will give it to you, in big servings. So yeah, Mayo, but Mayo is just a medical school, like alot of others. And you will be just a med student trying to do well on step one, as will the rest of the folks.

i'm pretty sure we've come to the conclusion in this thread that it's neither -- it all depends on whether both of your interviewers were at the meeting and whether or not they had people to rank before you. so, essentially, it's a neutral thing. don't worry, i had a panic attack about being ranked so quickly if you read above.

Neither. Probably just means that one of your interviewers wasn't at the last meeting (likely due to the holidays). So don't sweat it. You'll probably get ranked this Thursday or next Thursday (whenever both of your interviewers are there).

Regardless, I haven't heard of anyone not getting an email saying they've been ranked. So technically, "getting ranked" has no substantive bearing it all. It just lets you know when you've become eligible for an acceptance the next time they give them out. But I completely understand stressing about anything Mayo.

The adcom meets again today to rank interviewed applicants, so some of us should get the ranking email later tonight. Apparently those who interviewed up through the first week of December should be reviewed this Thursday or (more likely) next Thursday. :luck:

so another round of acceptances is going out in late january, right? would that be after a thursday adcom meeting as well?

Dunno. All Jane said was that it would be "later in January." But that could just as easily mean this week as the last week. Who knows? I'm assuming that acceptance decisions would also be made on a Thursday, but I'm just guessing. Then again, since the last batch went out on 12/6, a Thursday, I'm thinking that's probably correct.
