Random question, is it officially known as the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and unofficially as Mayo Medical School? The packet I received at my interview has both versions and I'm not sure which to use.

Have no fear, we're all still Mayo-crazy here. 😍 I feel silly admitting it, but I had another Mayo dream late last Thursday night. I think I remember reading somewhere that you tend to dream about things 4-6 weeks after an event happens, which would then make sense of this:

In my dream I was going to my second Mayo interview, and I opened the door to the interview room and saw that it was a large lecture hall. My interviewer (a woman, and not who my actual interviewer had been) was sitting where the podium would be, at the bottom of the room. I was at the top. And each crescent-shaped row of chairs were on narrow strips separated by six feet of abyss, Indiana Jones style. She told me that I would have to make it down to her to complete my interview. Normally I'm a little wierded out by great heights, but I wouldn't say it's a usual fear. But in my dream, I was absolutely terrified that I would slip down one of the holes to the abyss and die.

Suddenly I noticed that other students were sitting in some of the seats watching, and they were actually smiling and trying to be encouraging. (I know how cheesy this sounds). And somehow I managed to jump all the abysses down to the bottom. I was so happy I made it. My interviewer congratulated me, and said that it was too bad I wouldn't commit to Mayo then and there, or I'd get in on the spot. I said I would absolutely commit - what do I do? She said I'd have to hand over my Illinois drivers license to show my commitment. I was so thrilled! As we walked back to the admissions office I was digging frantically in my bag, but I couldn't find my wallet or license! Then I looked up, and she was gone, and my first interviewer (who I actually did have in real life) was telling me about the ranking process and that I probably wouldn't hear back for months. I was devastated that I'd missed my chance to get an acceptance on the spot, and that that may have been my only real chance to go to Mayo. Then I woke up.

So, yeah, still got Mayo on the brain. Hopefully I'll get ranked next Thursday so that I can join those of you who must be jumping to look at their phone every time it rings, thinking that maybe, just maybe, it's Jane on the other end. 🙄

Sorry, didn't mean to tease, just rekindle the flames of Mayo-love 😀

I believe it's officially the Mayo Medical School, since that's the part that's larger on their website. Since the website says "Mayo Medical School, College of Medicine" (the COM part on the next line) and the PhD and Masters and etc programs all have COM on the second line after their program names, I think that the COM part is the department for all of their educational programs. Maybe? If anyone knows for sure, please correct me!

Since Mayo doesn't give the last acceptances out until mid-March, it's not like you're interviewing "for a waitlist spot" like I've heard happens at some other schools. Rather, you'll be interviewing for an outright spot in the class. Granted, there won't be as many acceptances to give out the closer we get to March 15th, but they'll still be there. And they've only given out 16/42 so far. So if you're a good fit for Mayo, and the fates smile upon you, you've definitely still got a shot. Good luck at your interview!

Thanks everyone!! I'm still in disbelief, but I got the email so I know I didn't imagine the phone call. Actually, Jane said to send my acceptance in writing along with the deposit so I'm not sure when I'll talk to her again. I might call her to get in contact with some current students or for more information. I'll remember to ask her when I do speak with her. But yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm going to Mayo barring anything ridiculous happening.

I agree - after Melissainsd's Mayo success last year after her obsession on SDN, I have high hopes for Phoenix 😀

haha, i feel exactly the same way! my phone doesn't get reception at my job...so every hour i'd run out of lab to check my phone. i'm such a nerd.

As I understand it, the adcom meets every Thursday to rank applicants, but acceptances are given out only about once a month. I'm not sure if there is a special meeting for deciding on acceptances or if that is taken care of at the regular meetings.

that might be possible. we've only heard from 2 people on sdn so far who have received acceptances this round. i know that not everyone who gets an acceptance is on sdn...but i would really like to hope that they still have a few more to hand out this month!

since you haven't gotten a call/email yet, could it be possible that the calls for this round are not yet complete?

I'm guessing it's either one of three scenarios:

1) They made the acceptance calls yesterday, but didn't enter in the hold status emails until today. In which case, applicants just put on hold will get the hold email around 1:30am CST tonight;

2) They started the calls yesterday but didn't finish, so they'll call a couple of more people today and then enter the hold status, again with applicants on hold getting the hold email around 1:30am CST tonight; or

3) They will be giving out a few more acceptances after the meeting today, which is why they haven't sent out the holds yet, which will also be emailed out tonight.

I'm just guessing that they only gave out 5 acceptances yesterday (of course, it could have been 10), but that perhaps they'll give out five more either today, or later on this month. Based on past history that's certainly possible - I think last month they gave five acceptances out on 12/6 and five acceptances out on 12/7. Also, five acceptances (the ones just given out) were originally (per Jane) intended to be given out before January 1st, but weren't due to the holdays and difficulty to get the adcom together. In addition, we're only two months away from March 15th, which is the date by which Mayo gives out all 42 acceptances (or more if some are declined outright). Assuming they've given out about 20 so far, I would guess they might give a couple of more out this month. Then again, they could just decide to give out 10 in February and 12+ in March. Regardless, luck to everyone waiting! I'm just hoping I get ranked today. You can bet I'll be up at 1:30am CST watching my email. I know, silly. But I can't help it. 😳

EDIT: I just went back and looked, and it looks like Jane usually makes the acceptance calls around 11:30am CST. Granted, that may not have any bearing on future calls, but that seems to be the pattern. If that's true for today, then those of use who will be ranked today probably don't need to stare at our phones too.

Thanks for the info on the acceptances given out. I'll update the list above. Looks like we're at 23 given out so far.

Alas, you need to stay on the edge of your seat. Each time they give out acceptances, it could be you! And it doesn't seem that acceptance decisions are only made on Thursdays at the adcom meetings, so you can be in a constant state of anxiety every weekday. 😛 Although given past practices, it appears it will probably be another month before they give out more acceptances.

FYI - For those who think they might get ranked today, the adcom is currently in session right now, and Jane has left for the day, so the ranking emails will almost certainly go out tomorrow, and not today/1:30am. That'll at least save me from sitting up and watching my email at 1:30am tonight. Silly, I know.

Anyway, that info is per Julie. I also asked when they believe the next set of acceptances would go out, and she wasn't sure, but said that Jane would probably have a better idea. I'll probably call Jane tomorrow to follow up so we can all sit back and relatively relax for a few weeks if the next round of acceptances is weeks away.
