Mayo 2008!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
wait are the 42 acceptance they will give out this year mean just for MDs or does the 42 included the 8 MD/PhDs?

Total MD acceptances given out to date: 23

Ok, so I just called Jane and got the low down:

She said that the adcom could decide to admit a few more people at any time, but that generally she would expect the next round of acceptances to go out sometime in February. They have given out 23 MD offers and 2 MD/OMS offers so far. Pretty much all offers so far have been dean's scholarships since they were the highest ranked applicants, and anticipate some of these students will have multiple competitive acceptances and may end up declining Mayo. Regardless, there are still dean's scholarships left, and there will be some available throughout the season in case they come across someone outstanding.

Last night they reviewed 11 applicants. While there is one outlier who interviewed on 11/29 who hasn't been reviewed yet, they're pretty much up to the 12/12 interviewees and beyond. Next week they're having a dinner adcom meeting which adds two hours to the meeting, so they expect to get through a very large group next week. Jane said she hoped for 40, but that it probably wouldn't be quite that many.

As for MD/PhD students, they just started interviewing them today. They interview 11-12 per day, for about four days of interviewing or so, and they don't give out any of the 6 MD/PhD acceptances until all of the candidates have been interviewed.

So, the bottom line is that they're picking up speed in catching up with ranking applicants, and that there could be more acceptances on virtually any day, but most likely the next round will be in February. Good luck everyone!

:luck:

Eeek, thanks for the update Phoenix and congrats on being ranked! I'm guessing I'll be ranked at next week's meeting. I wonder if dinner adcom meeting = happier adcom = higher rankings, heh

I can't stop thinking about Mayo. 🙁

Do not worry, if they are interviewing you that is excellent regardless of WHEN you interview. Mayo does not give acceptances all en masse because they want to interview all potential candidates. There are excellent candidates all through the interview season. See you soon Dr.Bowtie!

Hows the snow situation looking for the next week or so?

Hows the snow situation looking for the next week or so?

I have Rochester weather on my iphone next to Chicago. 😀 It looks like single digit temps for the next week, with snow today and monday, but otherwise just cloudy or sunny.

Good luck for your interview Dr. Bowtie!!! :luck:

Hows the snow situation looking for the next week or so?

Shouldn't be any snow...just cold. Of course, it's supposed to be extremely cold here right now and it isn't really...it's cold, yes, but not that cold. It usually doesn't snow much when it's really cold. I'd avoid wearing a thin shirt though...it's freezing on my floor right now!

There is snow but to be honest it is not cold (this of course is relative) like it usually is. The wind factor is bearable right now which is what kills you in Rochester 🙂 but to be honest you have NO need to be outside hardly at all. The tunnels are awesome and there are shuttles to the different sites. Nice.

I got the ranking email too. Just a bit too late to be considered for the latest acceptance round 🙁

Also the roads should be pretty good for the next week or so, but it will be cold!!!

The reason I ask is we will be driving in so I was just trying to gauge the road situation in the area.

There's no big snows predicted, so the roads should be fine...just remember to carry all the winter essentials with you in your car. When it's really cold, getting stuck on a road, particularly in the middle of nowhere can be dangerous...so make sure you've got coats, hats, mittens/gloves, blanket, munchies, functional cell phone, water, anything else you might want if you were going to be stuck in the middle of nowhere and it were going to be dangerously cold. If anything happens, people are usually pretty quick to help, but it's best to be prepared.

Hi guys,

I got my hold email 🙁 treess sad. there are 25 acceptances out (and that is straight from Jane). My goodness I hope for good news at the next meeting.

If it cheers you up at all, only 23 of those are for MD students. The other two are for MD/OMS applicants. (Also per Jane). When did you get the hold email? Sorry you did. Good luck next round. Sounds like it probably won't be until February. Jane did make a point of saying that a hold is NOT a bad sign. They only give out a few acceptances each time.

Well that certainly is better news! Good luck to you too! (I can't think of a better person to be offered a spot, based on forum helpfulness and posts alone!👍)

Thanks! 😀 I hope this is the year that there are record numbers of SDN Mayo applicants that get in, and that we're all in Rochester this time next year posting advice for the Mayo 2009 thread.

I think this is a GREAT resource, and I'm so happy to have other Mayophiles to commiserate with, but for a school so small, and for a non-trad applicant like myself, there's this small concern that I'm so easily identifiable (I suppose we all are to some extent), and what impact that might have on my application. They could look at all of my Mayo posts and say - wow! We should definitely let her in! 👍 Or they could look at them and say - wow, this applicant is ridiculously infatuated! 👎

But in reality, I figure they have way too much to do to ever go to SDN to see what we're posting and match us up with an actual applicant. So I don't really worry about it. Which brings me back to:

Ah, Mayo.... 😍

Hey everyone! I took a few week break from SDN to try and keep my sanity, but I'm back for a bit. Congratulations to all those who received acceptances thus far! I'm very envious! Good to know that we have at least 19 more chances for the amazing Mayo! I'm not excited about the weather there, but it's such an amazing place that I can survive the cold.
:luck::luck: to everyone! Here's to hoping for some more acceptances soon!

Welcome back! But I have a bone to pick with you - when you actually break it down to "19 spots" it makes me break out in a light sweat. Stop that! 😛 I like to think of it as around 30 acceptances left still, since historically it could be possible for up to 10 to also get in off the waitlist. Let's try to keep the glass half full for as long as we feasibly can....

Jane is an unreliable source for MD/PhD information as an independent committee selects these students and she plays absolutely ZERO role in the process.

As for MD/PhD students, they just started interviewing them today.

Wrong. The first interview weekend for MD/PhDs was January 4th.

They interview 11-12 per day, for about four days of interviewing or so,

There are four MD/PhD interview weekends (the interview weekend spans from Thursday night to Sunday morning).

and they don't give out any of the 6 MD/PhD acceptances until all of the candidates have been interviewed.

Wrong. Acceptances are typically given out after each interview weekend (phone calls the Thursday after the weekend). Mayo MSTP does not over-accept, extending additional acceptances only when someone declines. Last year, seven acceptances were given for six spots.

I figure they have way too much to do to ever go to SDN to see what we're posting and match us up with an actual applicant.

Don't be so sure.

I doubt that many adcoms come and browse SDN on a regular basis and if they do it would be unprofessional to let a post determine if they will accept or not. BUT, just in case do not write anything on here that you would not be okay with everyone knowing....

I agree - I think the best way to use SDN is to realize it is incredibly easy for anyone to determine who you are once they have any real life knowledge of you - especially if you post information about interview dates, your stats, and your undergraduate institution. I don't think that this should be too big of a concern for our Mayo thread, though, as everything in here is mostly positive and all about the Mayo-love 😀

I agree, and I was a HUGE poster back in the day when I was in the thick of applications....I think SDN is a tremendous benefit and helps everyone to gather more information without constantly bugging medical schools which are busy enough.

I feel so silly. I heard my cell phone start to ring with an unknown number, glanced at the time and saw it was 11:50am (close to that 11:30am Mayo-acceptance witching hour), and for the first time grabbed my phone thinking that maybe, just maybe, it could be.... The state attorney general urging me to vote for a local democratic candidate. Butterflies for nothing, and angst for free.

You guys who have been ranked for a long time - do you still grab your phone when you hear it ring with an unknown number thinking that it might be Mayo? Or does that anticipation die off after a week or so? Obviously the next round should go out in February, but as Jane said, you never know....

Dude Phoenix, time to switch to decaf.

Dude Phoenix, time to switch to decaf.

Seriously, haha.

Now every time I see a new post in this thread I get scared that more and more acceptances have been given out.

Hmmm, if anyone from Mayo calls it usually shows up as Mayo Clinic (now this for sure is on land line), not 100% sure about cell phones.

It doesn't on cell phones, at least I always get a random 507 number that I, of course, can't call back...drives me nuts to no end. But...it DOES always show up as a 507-xxx-xxxx something something something...

Totally feel your pain though waiting for phone calls, I always end up answering random telemarketing calls or calls I'm trying to avoid...and then of course I blank cuz I'm like "what the hell, who's this?"...because WHO would be calling when I'm waiting for a call?

Wow. All I can say is I hope to be in your guys' shoes someday... No matter how many ulcers it may bring you! 🙂

Amen.

Phoenix, I guees I only have room to talk because I haven't been ranked yet (Interviewed 2 weeks ago). Mayo has absolutely ruined me on all my other interviews and acceptances. I'll be living by my phone next month.

Guys, you are all awesome! I hope ALL of you get in and we would have the biggest SDN Mayo class ever! Good luck to everyone!

Well, technically, it's already going to be the biggest mayo class ever due to the increase in the class size this coming year.

I haven't yet interviewed...at least not at the med school anyway, I'll be in the Mayo class of 2013. I'm a postdoc at Mayo right now.

Ah, ok. I jumped to conclusions when I read your reaction to seeing a 507 area code.

You'll be in the class of 2013 - does that mean you don't have to apply to the MD program next year? If so, that's quite nice.

How are you enjoying your postdoc at Mayo (how many years in are you)? And how do you like Rochester? Sorry for the 20 questions. Answer as you see fit.

No, I have to apply this June. I'm just being confident...after all, I'm an exceptional candidate...how could they possibly not notice that? 😀

I've been here since last June. My lab is pretty cool, it's a bit more biology that my previous work but it's crazy the way things work at mayo. In some ways, it's kinda like a swiss bank (or maybe swedish mafia) of the medical/research world...a little secretive from the outside world, but amazingly efficient and meticulous. Whatever you need done, someone does it - quickly and neatly, and then thanks you at the end. Not to mention - they do the best cookies and bars. You can pretty much get a free tasty lunch everyday at Mayo by going to one of the talks or grand rounds, the food is good and the talks are usually pretty interesting.

Rochester isn't bad...I like snow, I like hockey, and I like fresh air. After NYC, it's a big change but I like to drive and it's good to have actual grocery stores. I have to say, if there's anything you want to do, chances are there's a group for it or Mayo subsidizes trips relating to it, or you'll be able to find people that are interested. There are stores here...and they're always building more (it's kinda crazy how fast things get built in Rochester)...and the cities aren't too far for an occasional trip.

Welcome to the club, Donkey. I added you to the list at the top of the page. :luck:

Glad to be in the group.
Does anyone else think we sound like desperate teenagers throwing ourselves at the hottest girl/guy in the school?
-"When will they ever call back?"
-"My heart beats faster everytime I get an unknown phone number"
-"I run out of class if even think they are trying to get a hold of me."

I guess I'm not afraid to say that Mayo is my medcrush.
Also, I interviewed on the 14th.

hello mayo peeps!
Phoenix, I just wanted to say I think you'd make an awesome classmate based solely on how helpful you've been in this thread. Mayo should accept you because of that alone, haha.

😍 Ok, I'm nominating you to an impromptu MS0 Mayo adcom position too. So, how about I start an e-petition?

Glad to be in the group.

I do NOT like your analogy. Because as freshmen, none of us ever got a date with the hottest senior in high school.

haha i LOVE it!!

(medcrush) =)

Hi Mayo lovers:
This thread is great and very supportive.
I got put on hold status at Mayo recently. I wrote them a letter of interest after interview, because I really liked it there.
Now, I feel like I should write another one with a little bit of modification, but most importantly, I want to make it shorter. (one page max) because my last letter was almost 2 pages I think. It probably didn't get read becasue of the lenght of it.
I think a letter of Intent is the route I don't want to go (since I am not ready to make that commitment), but is another letter of interest appropriate? Are the adcoms going to think this person is crazy to have 2 letters of interest in file.

Thank you all,
Please advice

You should write another LOI if this is your top choice. Add any new relevant items if you can (grades, research, etc) but if not just again reiterate how much Mayo would be a good fit for you. Keep it short and to the point. Good luck.
