Do you think we should mail or email letters of interest?
 
To be honest, I do not think it "really" matters but to me personally I think regular snail mail is just more "classy".
 
I would think electronic or snail wouldn't really matter either, but efex is probably right that snail is classier. Guess I missed that boat. I was so eager to get my letter to them after my interview that I emailed it. Perhaps I'll be patient enough in the future to mail it instead. 🙄

By the way, thanks for asking/posting. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy when I see the Mayo thread on the first page. 😀
 
I didn't get ranked last night. 🙁

Sorry custard. Hopefully you'll get ranked in a week or two, in time for the next batch of acceptances to go out (which will likely be in February). I'm sure there won't be any detriment to getting ranked then rather than now. It's not like they gave out 7 acceptances the day before your ranking. 🙄

But I completely understand the desire to make some progress through this system. Having recently just taken that step, all I can say is that it really just graduates you from watching your email to watching your phone.
 
I got my ranking email. I wish I knew how I ranked. It definitely increases the anticipation :horns:.

I thought it started in December (they were doing leadership when I interviewed the first week of December):

But perhaps there are multiple leadership blocks? Yeah, there's one that the MS1 year starts with in July. So perhaps you're wondering about when leadership will start in 2008. If so, I think it's sometime near the end of July.

Good to hear that everyone's getting ranked and such. I'm totally all about the staring at my cell phone in anticipation... still... been doing this since October! The other day I got a call from an unknown number and I called them back like 3 times just in case it was Mayo.
Any clue when we should anticipate February adcom meeting or calls? At least it's a short month! Good luck to everyone! I hope all of us get in this time 🙂

The first day of orientation this year is July 21st. I'm pretty sure, although not positive, that that's also officially the beginning of that first Leadership block.

Yeah, orientation is basically the first leadership block for like 3 weeks. Then, at least this year, there was a second leadership block after gross anatomy for three weeks before Christmas. It doesn't quite seem so much "leadership" as random stuff that doesn't really fit into any one category big enough for a while block.

I got a call on Friday from "Information Unavailable" and I got really excited. It was just my dad calling from his office because his cell battery was dead. The waiting continues...

My phone rang with a "blocked" number today and I hoped for about a split second...and then remembered that it should show up as (507). 🙂 I'm going to try to dissociate my phone from being a potential-Mayo-acceptance-device until February. That's, what, a couple of days of respite? Probably mid-February though based on past calls.
 
Phoenix, I just got the hold email too🙁. Hopefully they just sent it to everyone who got ranked but did not receive a phone call yet because the calling will happen sometime late inf February or something? This will only be a problem if other people were on the same boat as us and did not receive a hold" email.

My guess is that Jane is making the phone calls right now. I did try Jane, and it's ominously busy. From everything we've seen, no hold email goes out until you've been considered once when they were giving acceptances out. Trying not to feel like all hope is lost. My mother was just trying to convince me to try my best to forget about Mayo altogether at this point and just plan on attending Loyola. Where's that heart breaking icon? I know a hold isn't the end of the world, but I figured I'm an odd duck as it is, and either they wanted me for the "diversity of perspective" I'd bring, or.....
 
oh Phoenix Im sorry. I am so intimidated by applicants like you, it seems like everyone who applied is so well qualified and in love with the school. I really hope I get to meet you next year at Mayo. Im interviewing Friday, but a boy can dream right? I think I have the "day in the life of a MMS student" video memorized.

Ok, so while my heart continues to quietly break, I just spoke with Jane, and 7 more acceptances were given out today. No idea when the next bunch will be sent out. 12 left.
 
I wouldn't take it as a terrible sign. They told us on our interview that since they are behind in rankings that they were going to make appointments accordingly. We were basically told that we'd probably hear right around March 15th in that we may not get ranked until the final ranking meeting.

Also Jane told us historically 10-15 people came off of the waitlist.

I definitely appreciate the encouragement!!! Does anyone have any good ideas of how to entertain myself in rochester for the weekend? I couldnt get a flight back until monday. And phoenix, I think you are THE nicest person on SDN, thank you for running the mayo medcrush support group

Ill be staying at the Kahler Friday and saturday night, then in an airport hotel on sunday night in Minneapolis. Im taking shuttles, so no car.

There is a comedy club called Goonies downtown Rochester. I went to a show there and it was pretty good. There is also a bar attached called McGoons I think.

the kahler grand has a decent rec room and nicer spa so bring ur swim stuff. you can explore the gradeurs of the tunnel system and talk to people who with the awesome minnesota accent much like the show " bobby's world" . thats pretty neat.

Well, there's always taxis and the buses...neither of which are too bad. I'm not sure what you're interested in...you could probably get some of the M1s to take you out with them to the bars or a movie. There might be an Ice Hawk game (hockey)...they're pretty good and there's usually a good turnout.

Absolutely. The M1s were really friendly and depending on what block they're in, would probably be more than happy to invite you out with them. I was there (about a week) after they'd finished a tough block, and were in their second leadership block, and they invited all of the interviewees out with them on Friday night for dinner, then drinks, etc. Oh, and Thursday night they had "wine night" and those of us that were staying with hosts tagged along. Since you're not staying with a host, you might want to ask Jane if she could put you in touch with one of the hosts so that you could coordinate with them if some of them get together the night before your interview for dinner or drinks. Just a thought.

I also received the hold email today. For me, you have been the poster-child for Mayo. Your our unofficial leader. Don't give up hope yet. If you give up hope, we all will too. Only seven acceptances were given out, and they will continue to consider our applications each time they meet :luck:.
 
I got the hold message, too. I know they say that they continually review the applications, but has anyone been put on hold and then gotten in so far this year? Or is it more like a pre-waitlist?

Frickonastick got put on hold in the end of October, and accepted at the start of December. So a hold definitely does not mean a rejection. It just feels like it since the available number of spots is shriiiiiiiiinking....

I wanted to call Jane to ask her a few questions but I can't find a direct phone number to her. What is the number you call to speak with her?
 
By the way, our count from the last time they gave out acceptances (1/17) was 23 accepted. It then jumped to 30 on 1/30, but I don't recall there being another round of acceptances between 1/17 and 1/30. Today they let 7 more lucky people in, which would bring our current total to 30, correct? So if there class size has increased to 52 this year, we do have more than 12 shots at getting in? Maybe I'm just being hopeful.

Congrats on the acceptance at the U. The phone number I have for MMS is 507 284 3671. Thanks for encouraging me to apply there. I have my interview in mid February. I hope they enjoy my 1/8th minority.

Jane's number is (507)284-3671.

They did increase the number of MDs. This year there are 42 MD spots (last year it was 34). The other spots are for MD/PhDs and OMS.

42 MD spots, 6 MD/PhD, 2 MD/OMS spots I believe.
 
I'm surprised that these 7 new appointees aren't on here! We haven't had a round yet where there wasn't at least one new SDN Mayo acceptance!
 
Hello Folks 🙂

I interviewed at the Mayo on 1/25 and really enjoyed my visit! I can see why so many of you guys are head over heels over this place 🙂

Does anyone know how far they are in the ranking process? In other words, is the 1/7 interview group the last group that has been ranked? Also, do they have interview groups every single Monday & Friday?

aye... waiting is always the toughest part, but good luck to everyone!! you all deserve it!
 
so i have a bit of a neurotic question....

my LOI is a bit over 1 page...should i print it off as 2 pages or 1 page with writing on both sides?

also, i have fancy resume paper, should i send it with this or just a clean white page?

(it's amazing how one can obsess about these little things with way more important things on the line)
 
you should probably condense it to one page (more professional and to the point and they have to go through lots of these LOIs) and regarding the paper, it probably doesnt matter. your preference =)
 
I agree about condensing it to one page (especially since it sounds like it's close, maybe if you play with the margins a little it might help?). Also, the paper doesn't matter one bit. My letter of intent was on normal white paper and I don't think it hurt me! However, if you have nice paper that you won't use for anything else... if it makes you feel better to use it, go for it 😀
