Mayo 2008!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I agree about condensing it to one page (especially since it sounds like it's close, maybe if you play with the margins a little it might help?). Also, the paper doesn't matter one bit. My letter of intent was on normal white paper and I don't think it hurt me! However, if you have nice paper that you won't use for anything else... if it makes you feel better to use it, go for it 😀

Haha yeah, I emailed my update/interest letter as a word document. Virtual paper rocks!
Jane said she just prints them out and puts them in your file anyways. And, I guess I'm just lazy.

Hello Folks 🙂

I interviewed at the Mayo on 1/25 and really enjoyed my visit! I can see why so many of you guys are head over heels over this place 🙂

Does anyone know how far they are in the ranking process? In other words, is the 1/7 interview group the last group that has been ranked? Also, do they have interview groups every single Monday & Friday?

aye... waiting is always the toughest part, but good luck to everyone!! you all deserve it!

Welcome to the thread! I just spoke to Jane, and she said that the group up for ranking tomorrow is around the mid-December interview dates. There were a couple of people who got ranked earlier (i.e., the 1/7 interviewee) because some of the fourth year student interviewers will be leaving for a few weeks, and needed to get those applicants reviewed first.

In other news, all invites have gone out by now, and as you know, interviewing ends in mid-Feburary.

But the most wonderful thing Jane had to share, was that FIFTEEN people actually got off the waitlist last year. I had heard varying accounts of how many it was. But I really like the number fifteen. 😀 Also, I asked, but no one has declined a Mayo acceptance yet. (Doh.) Jane said that there's usually a lot of movement the week before May 15th, which is pretty much as expected.

so i have a bit of a neurotic question....

my LOI is a bit over 1 page...should i print it off as 2 pages or 1 page with writing on both sides?

also, i have fancy resume paper, should i send it with this or just a clean white page?

(it's amazing how one can obsess about these little things with way more important things on the line)

I did the same thing jacks did. Email (with a doc attachment) all the way. I'd play with the margins if it was only a little over, or edit it down a bit. And I had asked Jane first, and she said that email was great. I'm sure though, that fancy shmancy paper is classy too. 😉

I know this was said earlier in the thread, but if you are ranked at a thursday meeting, when do you get the ranked email and in general when do the holds/calls go out?

I know this was said earlier in the thread, but if you are ranked at a thursday meeting, when do you get the ranked email and in general when do the holds/calls go out?

You could probably scroll back through this thread to see when people posted that they got the rank email. I was ranked on 1/17, and got the email around 9:30pm that night. I'm assuming it either goes out the evening of the rank day, or the next day.

As for holds/calls, it's anybody's guess. Check out the list of our status above, and you'll see the dates that holds/calls went out. Usually it's about once a month, although they did give them out twice this month. Sometimes the hold email goes out the day after acceptance calls are made; sometimes it goes out same day. The past hold email dates were 10/23, 12/6, 1/17 and 1/30. Which corresponded with acceptance call dates of 10/22, 12/6, 1/16 and 1/30. Basically, after you're ranked, you get the hold email the next time acceptances go out (if you don't get an acceptance). :luck:

Wait, all invites have gone out? Does that mean this round, or do you mean they have sent out all 42 acceptance invites? I thought we said there are still 12 spots open?

I think she meant all interview invites have been sent out.....NOT acceptance invites 🙂

Do not fret 🙂

Aaahhhhhh!!!

I got an e-mail this morning from Mayo and I'm in! I also received the Mayo Merit Scholarship ($15k) (edit: it's the one that all accepted students get unless they get the Deans scholarship which is full tuition). Hooray! so happy 🙂

I had to keep all my immediate joy inside and then run to a meeting i was late for at work. But hooorayy!

I was ranked on 1/24 after interviewing in mid-December.

wow, now i feel warm fuzzies.

best of luck to everyone who's still waiting! hope to see you at Mayo next year!

Well done, caffeineaholic!!! Did you get a call too or just the e-mail?

I got an e-mail this morning from Mayo and I'm in!

Congrats on your appointment, caffeine!! :hardy:

Also, I didn't know they emailed people acceptances, maybe they couldn't get a hold of you by phone?

Well done, caffeineaholic!!! Did you get a call too or just the e-mail?

I just got the e-mail, no call. Maybe it'll come later? that's what happened to me w/ a different school as well. I don't mind either way, just happy i can keep re-reading my e-mail 🙂

Congrats on your appointment, caffeine!! :hardy:

Also, I didn't know they emailed people acceptances, maybe they couldn't get a hold of you by phone?

Hmm, I didn't recieve any missed calls or voicemails. Oddly enough, I recently received news from a different school that usually notifies by phone first, but instead, I received a mailed letter (and then a phone voicemail a couple days later). Maybe my phone is weird? I receive calls from friends (and even telemarketers who've gotten a hold of my cell phone number) just fine.

So, is Mayo the one then?

I think I remember Jane saying that when you're accepted, they call, then email and then send a letter - whatever it takes to get a hold of you asap.

Guys, do not lose hope if you were put on "hold", many folks get off the "hold" list at some point. Again, keep the hopes up and just remember, although Mayo IS the top choice for many of you, just getting into A medical school is a HUGE accomplishment. You will be a physician! but I do hope you ALL end up at Mayo 🙂 I think this is the biggest SDN ever thread about Mayo...but maybe I am wrong. Keep it up and good luck!

I just checked, and on this day last year, the Mayo 2007 thread was on post 770. So, we're close! Also, apparently at this time last year, they'd given out 21 acceptances:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=4691525&postcount=778

I suppose they're at 30 now instead since they added 8 MD spots this year.

As for last night, they got through ranking 12-15 apps. Good luck guys! :luck:

Let's step it up, then! I'll start it off with our favorite Mayo reference:

I'll let you take the lead Jacks. I've realized that if I keep up my current level of Mayo-enthusiasm, it will be crushing when I get rejected. I don't love Mayo any less, but it's probably a good idea to focus less on how wonderful it would be to go to Mayo, and focus more on the wonderful places I've been accepted to.

Haha!

Nice. Well, it's good to know that we are behind in the Mayo enthusiasm - we do need to step it up! However, I did start this thread earlier in the year than they started their thread last year, so I have to say I'm a little disappointed that we have fewer posts as of February!

Also, just wanted to inject a little Mayo love from an old post found through a random Mayo search (it's a good one, and the first point almost blows my mind):

I have been utilizing a similar strategy. I must say I still get pangs of Mayo pain but they are less often and I recover more quickly now. I hope we all get the final 12 spots!!!

Alot of good points!! Would just like to add some insight as a current student at Mayo🙂

1) Board score average was a 238. This was the highest in the nation. Half the class scored in the top percentile. That being said... the board aren't everything.

So, regarding that first post, I think that's based on their old curriculum. The students taking the board this year will be the first class to take it with the new curriculum. While board scores aren't everything, and I'm sure Mayo students will again kill the boards, I am vaguely curious to see how the average turns out this year. Anyone know when step 1 scores are released?

Amen.

And I can't help myself, but I thought I'd mention something else I thought was really cool. In the area where you wait for your interview, they have little books that look like Lonely Planet travel guides. In fact, they're a guide book to MMS made by current M2's for the starting class. Each year makes one for the new students. I think some of the older editions are "Mayo for Dummies" books, while the newer ones are "Lonely Planet" Mayo guides. They print them in the same format and style, and it's pretty neat, with great info and facts on Mayo and everything you'd ever want to know in order to be prepared to start as a Mayo student, and what the first year there is like. I was so taken by them on my interview day that Jane gave me last year's copy. If anyone really yearns to take a browse through it, let me know and we can pass it around via snail mail.

So thats about 1-2 interview days they got through. Its looking like the end of january people won't get ranked until right at the deadline.

When is their last interview date? March 15? Earlier?

I would love to do this after I've been accepted! (if 🙁 )

I gotta tone down all this Mayo love too. Lots of Mayo love + lots of waiting + lots of worry = a very nauseous custard 😱

Congrats caffeine. That is great you got in. I wish they would email me...

So, I interviewed on 2/1 and Marcy (Jane replacement in training?) told us that only 25 "appointments" have been made. I dont know if that is the number of people who mailed their deposits or what but it sounded like just straight acceptances to me. Also, to give a little hope, there were a couple of pre-med monsters who seemed completely unimpressed with the place (they need a shrink) and were bragging about other acceptances. Im pretty sure mayo can see through the facade and into the arrogance, and will let in all us mayophiles.

Shameless bump.

I was watcing "Thinner" on HBO and after the gypsy curses one of the guys, his wife says "We sent him up to the Mayo Clinic".

So famous, its referenced in Hollywood.

Yeah, read about that a couple of months ago. I'm glad the owner halted the procedure right away, but still, I hope those people have great workers comp. It's inconceivable they weren't provided masks in the first place. Being blasted constantly with raw pulverized brain matter can't be a good idea. 👎 But 👍 to sending the employees for top notch care at Mayo!

I submitted another love letter to Mayo today via email, and received an email back from Marcy saying that she would attach the letter to my application. I addressed it to the Dean, and I guess I hoped that she would send a copy on to the Dean as well. Instead, it sounds like it's just getting put in my file, which may or may not get reviewed again unless I'm near the top of the stack, eh? Hrm.

Phoenix,
Just wanted you to know that I am a faithful reader of the Mayo thread despite being rejected by them months ago. Every time it's on the front page, and especially when you're the last poster, I keep hoping that you're writing to say you got in. . . I'm pulling for you!!!
And the rest of y'all, too, but she's the head honcho around here. 🙂

Wow, thanks! It's heartening to know that there's a cheering peanut gallery out there reading our breathlessly eager Mayo posts. 😀 But I think it's safe to assume that my posts at least are not going to be anything momentous just yet. I'm convinced that if I'm going to get ridiculously lucky, it'll be in March or, if fortunate enough to get waitlisted, in June. The rest of the time I'm going to do my best to be more nonchalant about this angst-creating process or I'll be a quivering mass of anticipation by the time July rolls around and I actually matriculate somewhere. Unless, of course, Mayo puts me out of my misery in March with a swift rejection. In that case, there will be ample recovery time. 🙄

Anyway, I'll definitely be rooting for you too. I see you've got UVA, VCU and EVMS decisions pending. Congrats and GOOD LUCK!!! :luck:

Yea, Phoenix, I didn't even apply there this year, and I read the thread whenever I see you post!

Thanks for the encouragement, namsoon! Although I'm starting to feel a bit like a horse at the races here. So, what are my odds? Will there be a big payoff? Let's see, looks like a $2 bet on this mare would yield about a $16 payoff assuming 7-1 odds (given about 50/350 will eventually "finish the race"):

http://horseracing.about.com/cs/handicapping/a/aaoddschart.htm

I've never bet at the races, but wouldn't that be considered generally steep odds? We all must be crazy, eh? Go SDN Mayo Derby-runners! We should all have race horse names, like Dream Run, Early Flyer, Hero's Tribute.... I'll be Phoenix Rising.

That's a great race horse name. Since I completely place bets based on names, I would totally put my boring $2 on you!!!

Thanks! I was just comparing our roster to the Kentucky Derby "future wager":

http://horseracing.about.com/library/blfuture3.htm

and it looks like some of us already have great racehorse names. I can hear them over the microphone: "And it's Jacks Mannequin for the win!!!" Lacrosse Star, Caffeine-Aholic and First Straw aren't bad either. But Lame Donkey and I'm Eating Soup may have to...errr....adopt nicknames for the race. Or perhaps they just yield a bigger payoff. 😳

haha, I always wanted to win a horse race. I guess if I ever get into it, I have my horse's name.

For whatever reason I've also been following this thread even though I'm not applying till next year. Mayo seems like a pretty awesome school I must say. I wouldn't have considered applying (at least at this point) if it weren't for you guys.

Good luck to one and all and congrats to those already accepted.

Since I'm the resident HR whiz, the future bets are ridiculous unless you follow HR closely.

If I get in, I'll arrange a trip to Canterbury Park in the TC.

Lame Donkey is probably an appropriate nickname for me at this point. They don't make movies about flashy horses that win because they are supposed to.
7 to 1 isn't so bad anyway. I just got laid-off and it's at least 8 to 1 that I'll even get out of bed.

Here's to all the Long-Odds out there.

Wow, donkey, I'm really sorry to hear that. It's most definitely their loss.

And while it won't cheer you up at all,....wait a minute. What's that?!?! Do you see that? It can't be, but it is! It's Lame Donkey! He's coming up on the pack fast and furious from behind tight to the inside rail and it looks like he's going to take the lead!

And down the stretch they come!!!

*The crowd goes wild*

btw, everyone should rate this thread 5 stars!

Great idea. Rated.

Today another batch may learn their fate! :scared:

While applicants will definitely be ranked today, I'm not convinced that Thursdays are as firmly tied to acceptances as rankings are. Past acceptances were given out on a Monday, a Wednesday and two Thursdays. Although it does seem that calls are made around 11:30am CST....

Also, with only 12 acceptances left to give out, I would guess that they'll hold off on doling them out so soon. My gut is that they'll give a batch out between the second to fourth week in February, and the rest out in March.
