While applicants will definitely be ranked today, I'm not convinced that Thursdays are as firmly tied to acceptances as rankings are. Past acceptances were given out on a Monday, a Wednesday and two Thursdays. Although it does seem that calls are made around 11:30am CST....

Also, with only 12 acceptances left to give out, I would guess that they'll hold off on doling them out so soon. My gut is that they'll give a batch out between the second to fourth week in February, and the rest out in March.

Are we for sure saying 30 MD slots have been filled or are you considering this:

Since Jane said 30 had been given out, that's what I'm going by. My gut is that at that time, only 25 had gotten back officially accepting the acceptances at that point. Either that, or they were misinformed. Jane's the real deal since she's the one that makes the calls. No?

I don't know about you, but I don't want any false hope. This is painful enough as it is. In my mind, the gradual dwindling of hope is preferable to having high hopes dashed precipitously. Not trying to be cynical, but I am trying to be more realistic.... If you get the hold email you'll feel where I'm coming from. But hopefully you'll be spared that heart ache.

On another note, it appears last night my attempts to try not to keen after Mayo too much failed miserably. I had yet another Mayo dream. This one was apparently a future forecast. In the dream, it was mid-March (guess my subconscious has given up hearing from Mayo before then), and Mayo had just emailed and sent a fancy large embossed letter detailing the previous acceptances, new acceptances, and the waitlist applicants (each with a little blurb of something unique about them - oddly enough, I only remember seeing an investment banker (wearing orange horn-rimmed glasses - wow, guess there were photos too), real estate financier and neurology researcher among the acceptees). I was frantically trying to get on the internet to see who else from SDN got in and got waitlisted, but my connection wasn't working for some reason.

I remember reading through the names in my dream, and found my name under the alternate list. I immediately called my family. I was SO excited that I wasn't cut. And I was even more excited to see that they only pulled 30 names for the waitlist, unlike the 60-80 I had expected. I figured with 15 taken off the waitlist last year, it was much better odds than I'd hoped for.

Then I noticed that if you pulled back a flap on the bottom of the letter, there were directions for waitlisters, indicating that if we wanted to remain on the waitlist, we would need to send (on a CD), a paper (equivalent to 13 pages) or creative power point presentation (background music encouraged) giving an in-depth view into where we come from, who we are, our motivations, and our dreams. To say the least, I was intimidated given the blurbs next to everyone on the waitlist (can't remember now what they were though). I was pondering that I'd never put together a power point presentation before, and was bemoaning the fact that I probably didn't have a well photographically/video-documented history to put to stirring music in a power point (?!?!). Sheesh - my subconscious is cheesy! Anyway, then the phone rang and I woke up, so who knows if I would have spent the rest of my dream writing a paper. 🙄

I think my subconscious needs a vacation from this application process. Talk about a "dream school." Heh.

Thx! UVM is pretty great, but then I was swept up by the public hospital/indigent mission of BU. After that, OHSU seemed to combine the best of both. Also, don't underestimate the convenience of going to the Philly schools. Alas, I think I'll be happy at most any of the places I have interviewed, if one will only come through for me! Ok, I'll stop hijacking this thread and let the Mayo people have it back. Good luck Phoenix and all the rest of the Mayo hopefuls!

I got my ranking email on Friday 2/8 and interviewed on 1/14. Don't tell Mayo but I was seeing another med school behind her back on Friday. I think I have two medcrushes now. It's so confusing because I've always been a one woman man. I guess I'm just afraid that I might lose them both. If it comes to it I think I can let one of them down gently.

I didn't, and it didn't seem to hurt me, but then again she is so helpful that she probably deserves a thank you note from all of the interviewees! I don't think that sending her a late thank you note will change anything for your admissions-wise, but it would be a lovely think to do if you want to thank her!

Welcome to the Mayo thread/SDN! As for new appointments, we can only guess.... My best guess is anytime within the next two weeks. I figure they'll give out around 6 more this month, and then the last 6 next month, whenever they finish ranking the last interviewees.

Hmmm. I try to limit my insecurities to the 11:30am CST Mayo acceptance call witching hour. Any other time of the day I see the Mayo thread at the top of the forum, I 🙂 . But to be honest, I'm happy for those that get in, and perhaps a vicarious thrill is the closest I'll get, so I'll take what I can get, if you know what I mean.

I called Mayo today and spoke with Marcy (Jane is apparently out of the office for two weeks). She said there are 15 spots left to be filled (I asked about MD spots, but she may be including MD/PhD as well). She couldn't give me any other info.

question: mayo has a median GPA around 3.8 i believe, but they seem more interested in finding "unique" applicants who don't have to have the highest GPA or MCAT in the world to get in (i'm talking maybe 3.6+ GPA and a 30+ MCAT). is this at all true?

That's basically true, but there's more to it. From what I was told by students and staff while interviewing, you have to meet a certain criteria academically (at least what you posted) to be considered for an interview. At the interview stage however, they're looking to hand pick their new class, trying to make it fit their idea of a well balanced, diverse group. Thus two candidates with similar backgrounds, achievements, and personalities would be at a disadvantage. That's where the 'unique' factor comes in.

It's true. It's hard to tell what exactly they select for, mostly it seems they want a class that fits together well since it's such a small class. But there's a wide range of GPAs and MCAT scores that they take, so don't worry if you don't have the "perfect" scores when you're applying.

Today was the last interview day and appointments for those already ranked will most likely be made next week. One more round of appointments will take place in mid-March for those yet to be ranked.

I guess my question is, if I interviewed last Friday (15) or the Friday before, is it possible they could call me (or rank me or reject me ) this Tuesday, or are they so backlogged they may not decide where to put us late interviewees until March?

Well, they rank applicants every Thursday at the adcom meeting, so if you're not ranked yet, they will not be able to notify you of an acceptance. Once you've been ranked, THEN you can start staring at your phone hopefully. Alternatively, it is possible that you may get the call instead of the ranked email if you happen to be accepted the day you get ranked. However, acceptance decisions are apparently not tied to adcom meetings, so they can go out at any time, but seem to go out to around 5-8 applicants at a time, approximately once a month (but it's looking more like twice a month as we get closer to that March 15th "deadline").

It appears that the last people that posted on here about getting ranked interviewed on 1/14 and were ranked on 2/7. Not sure how much farther they got through interviewees last Thursday. But my best guess is that if you interviewed on 2/15, you will get ranked the first or second week of March. Since the last acceptances go out and the waitlist is formed on or right after March 15th, you will definitely be ranked by that date, of course.

Oh, and I don't think you're on the Mayo status list, so I'll add you. Take a look and you'll see about how long it tends to take to get ranked post-interview. But also keep in mind that some people were ranked later because both interviewers need to be present, or were ranked sooner because a med school student interviewer was going to be gone for a long time, so they stepped their review up. Regardless, good luck!
