EDIT: Btw, when were you ranked? Our theory is that applicants are only eligible to receive an acceptance once they have received their ranked email.

No, I didn't ask about how many were left. She said March 15th is when I can expect to next hear back (besides getting the hold e-mail I'm about to get).

I couldn't help it, and just called and spoke to Marcy. She said that 25 acceptances were given out, and then 7, and then another 7 today, so that makes 39. However, she said she knows one person has declined already, so we're at 38. That leaves just 4 acceptances to be given out by or on March 15th! Although, she did say she was speaking to the deans today, and that they expect a lot of movement (albeit in May when people have to drop their multiple acceptances).

I don't have time to go back and review last year's Mayo thread right now, but my recollection is that the last acceptances were given out by March 15th, and that those waitlisted received an email somewhere between March 15th and March 17th (can't remember exactly) letting them know, and a snail mail waitlist letter thereafter. Those rejected just got a snail mail letter. And I think somewhere around 60-80 got waitlisted, and 15 got accepted off the waitlist.

So, I just checked back through the 2007 Mayo thread. Apparently the waitlist is unranked. Last year everyone received a waitlist or rejection email the morning of 3/16.

In 2006, 350 were interviewed, 113 were put on the alternate list, and 12 were accepted. in 2007, I don't recall how many interviewed (250?), 66 were alternate listed, and 15 were accepted.

Can someone please just fast forward the next month of my life? I seriously lack patience. Oh well. 4 spots left doesn't leave too much hope. C'mon waitlist! For those of you that have already made it, Mayo isn't that great. Please seriously consider your state school or other schools. Rochester would really be a sucky place to live. 😀

Mayo, baby, darling, when I said "just hold me," I didn't mean it like that. I know we've had rough times. I was stupid to think I could play the field and see what's out there and that you'd always be there waiting for me. You've gotta believe those other schools meant nothing to me. I'm a changed man, I can look past all this and really make it work this time. All I need is one more chance, March 15th, let's make it our day.

can someone explain "ranked status" vs. "hold status"? I'm now on hold status.

Hey Frubeak, "ranked" means that the committee has reviewed your application and given you a rank (number). A "hold" means that your application was reviewed during the appointment period but they could not give you an appointment at the time. In other words, during an appointment period, they will either give you an acceptance or put you on hold. If you are on "hold", your application can be continually reviewed during subsequent appointment periods (ie- you are still in the game!).

One of my interviewers was a really nice emeritus professor with a bow tie (so cute, I wanted to pinch his cheeks so badly) and my other one was a really cool 4th year student (who knew a ton about my application!!). Jane and Marcy in the office were so friendly and accomodating too!

Also, does anyone know what happens at their adcom meetings? I know that our advocates present our files, but then does *everyone* in the committee give the candidate a ranking? does the dean participate in this ranking?

My interviews went really well - I felt that I clicked with both of my interviewers, so that really helped. A very enjoyable interview day 😀

To answer your questions about ranking, from my interview day Jane told us that each adcom member has a little remote that they use to enter a rank and then the average pops up on the screen once they've all logged their rank. So yep, everyone gets to rank each applicant (I'm not sure if people who aren't at the meeting get to rank you later, or if they just miss out). I'm not sure if Dean Lindor participates or not, but I would bet on it.

The rank is based on everything in your application - not just your interviews. The impression I got is that they review your entire application, your AMCAS, essays, interview reviews, etc. and then everyone votes on you as an overall applicant that may be a good fit for Mayo. So the rank is supposed to consolidate everything about each applicant into a format from which the top people can be easily identified and appointed 😀 (Of course, I may be mistaken, but that's what I have been led to believe)

Sorry I've missed all the Mayo chat - had the flu for the past FIVE days. Urgh. Anyway, I just talked to Jane, and asked if the final appointments would be made on 3/15. She said that since 3/15 is the date by which the class will already be filled, the last appointments should go out in the days before 3/15. And they're going to try to put together the waitlist as soon as possible thereafter. As posted previously, looks like last year's waitlist and rejection emails went out on 3/16. Hurray for nearing the light at the end of the tunnel!

Aww, thanks! Alas, Jane had the flu too recently - so it's really getting around. Now why did that come up? - I felt the need to explain my very-difficult-to-understand voice when I called today. 🙄

Anyway, I'll love Mayo even when they reject me, but I'm not holding out more than an extraordinarily slim amount of hope at this point. Unlike frick, I only felt like I really clicked with one of my interviewers. And I figure that might as well be the kiss of death when they're considering 350 top notch applicants. But honestly, I'll be ecstatic each and every time one of you guys posts that you got in. 😀
