Hmmm.. My "thank you for interviewing" e-mail said 6 weeks max until the admissions committee reviewing (and ranking) but my ranked e-mail didn't have a timeline in it for acceptances.. You ranked e-mail said 6 weeks?

Good catch. No, it didn't.

Crap. Well, start obsessing I guess.

Any word on when new acceptances will come out, Phoenix?

Is it snowing in Rochester? What's it like going to school with snow? (says the applicant from Florida).

Sorry, no idea when acceptances will be coming out. If I had to guess, I'd say perhaps at the end of this week, or next week. But again, that's purely speculation.

It did snow the other day (Friday?) but there's no snow on the ground right now. Pretty chilly today though, with a high around 30. Should warm up a little later in the week. This will be my first winter in MN, but I have lived in Chicago and NYC, and watched the temperature all last year. It was generally 10-15 degrees colder in Rochester than Chicago. Basically, it just means bundling up. A lot. Nice warm boots, a big (long) warm down coat, and hat and gloves. I was just thinking today that I need to buy my first pair of mittens. Well, adult mittens.

Anyway, back to Mayo. Everything is connected underground, so once you're at the med school, you're connected to the Clinic and all of the places you'd be going for classes or activities/shadowing. The only exception is if you're going to St. Mary's Hospital (as opposed to Methodist, which is connected via subway to the Clinic), which is usually during 3rd and 4th year, or for selective shadowing (i.e., at the ER). St. Mary's is linked via a free Mayo shuttle to the clinic/school, and only takes about 5 minutes. There are some students that avoid the snow and cold altogether by living in one of the condos at the top of the Holiday Inn, which is connected to Mayo via walkways and subways. I imagine they'll be flaunting shorts this winter. 🙄 I live two blocks from the St. Mary's shuttle to the Clinic, so once I get there, it'll be fine. Also, we get to park right near the school/clinic after 1:30pm on weekdays and anytime on weekends for the first two years (although classes are generally 8-12pm), and we get full parking privileges our 3rd and 4th years, so there will be even less exposure to the snow. But the bottom line is that it's not so bad once you get used to it. Then again, if you've lived in Florida all your life.... Not so much.

Ok, I realize I'm babbling now and need to get back to studying. Our anatomy final is at the end of this week, and needless to say, anatomy has been amazing, but I'm relieved to be in the final stretch.

Good luck to those of you waiting for an invite or acceptance. :luck:

Woo! Just got my ranked email. Let the waiting beginnnnn!

Congrats! when were you interviewed? And way to go for making it before the november appointments go out!

It took a little less than three weeks for me to get my ranked email. If you want exact dates, pm me! :luck:

Hey Everyone!
I interviewed at Mayo and am now playing the waiting game like so many others. I know this has probably been discussed a lot (so sorry) but I was wondering about time frame from ranking to acceptance?

Good luck to all of you!

once you are ranked, you are fair game to get accepted/appointed. It could be as little as one week, or not until March. It all depends. The appointments go out approximately once a month. The previous one was Oct 15th, so the next one should be mid to late Nov.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply!

:scared::scared:😱😱😱Ahhhh this wait is going to kill me!!!!! March is SUCH a long way away 😱

I know 🙁 part of me hopes this is the week for acceptances, and part of me hopes not, because I don't want to be the one not getting the call... Sigh. Good luck everyone if this is the week!

I know is hard to stay away, and the wait can be long. The best thing you can do is remain calm and enjoy life. Do not spend too much time here in SDN obsessing. If you have already become addicted to checking SDN's Mayo forum, try to establish a rule of only checking on Fridays, or just twice a week. Really, enjoy what you have now... the answer will come soon enough (even if March sounds far) and then you'll be in a medical school. Ok, back to studying for my GI final, also at the end of the week. Good luck on your Anatomy exam Phoenix!!!

Hey, the notation for the list of requests, invites, etc does not paint the full picture! I wanna know how long it was between being complete and getting an interview invitation/rejection. Mayo gave a rough time line in the email, but I wanna know what you guys have been experiencing.

81/2 weeks from complete (LOR have been received) to interview invite

thanks. december can't come soon enough. 😀
December huh...? You'll have to stop by and report how awful the Rochester weather is 😉 (I may be way off base here, but aren't you from Cali?) Congrats though 😀😀

uuuuhhh, just a little. 😉

actually, i'm from michigan (and lived in PA for 8 years), lol. i love the snow, but the cold isn't too fun. right now, where i live its about 35F and Minn is a few degrees lower. so for me, i don't think that it will be too bad.

and THANKS!!!

heh on my interview day the other people came from San Antonio, Phoenix, Florida, and California

Oh my goodness!!!! :wow: This is an absolute miracle. I'm so excited - my hands are shaking. :soexcited: The email was sent at 2:49am. (and for reference, I was complete 9/16.) Mayo here I come!!!

Congrats!!!!!
And... You are scaring me!!!! I was complete 9/19 and no word yet. ahhh.

Hahaha, alrighty, I'm a little confused 🙂 you'll be fine then. From what it sounds like the weather is really similar to Michigan weather (at least where I am in Michigan) but a little windier.

Speaking of cold, anyone know if there's any good skiing around Rochester?

Very sage advice. 👍 And good luck on your GI exam, shadow! :luck:

Now, over the past few years I've been on SDN I've seen many posts asking what students who will be entering med school next fall should do to prepare. And I've seen the overwhelming response by current med students that they should just enjoy themselves and relax before med school starts. I absolutely agree with that advice, especially if it's only a couple of months (i.e., the summer) before med school classes start.

However, if you've still got a semester of classes to take, and have a course slot open, you might consider taking an anatomy course. If you end up at a med school that has anatomy spread out over a long period over the course of the first year it will be superfluous, but if you end up at a school like Mayo where it's condensed into six weeks, you'll be a very happy camper. Obviously, taking anatomy before med school is absolutely definitely without a doubt not required, and you'll be fine without it. But IF you happen to be at an undergrad school that offers anatomy and IF you have the time, interest and inclination, it might not be a bad idea.... Anyway, that's just my two cents.

As for anatomy at Mayo, it's condensed, but amazing. Each dissection team (4 students) has a full searchable CT of the body on the computer right next to where they dissect, and radiologists come around and help identify interesting findings made during the dissection. Also, they have physicians from relevant specialties on hand to circulate during the dissection and give pointers and insight. For example, when we dissected the heart we had cardiac surgeons in the room to help us, we've also had pulmonologists (including Dr. Cortese, the CEO of the Mayo Clinic), orthopedic surgeons, PM&R, etc. Pretty mind blowing. I really love Mayo's dedication to integrating clinical experience and perspective into everything we do.

Anatomy isn't offered during the spring here, I wish I took it concurrent with physiology last year 🙁

Phoenix., what two features mark the narrowest birth canal? How to tell between a male and a female pelvis? Haha just kidding 🙂

I was complete 9/19 too and still haven't heard anything so you are not alone!

Well....just got rejected today 🙁
Marcy returned my call about my status and told me that they were in the final rounds of making a decision on whether or not I'd be invited to interview. She said I should hear within a week. This was at ~6:30am (CA time) on my way to work....I got home today and there was the lovely not selected email.

so, so disappointed. I know I am way below average for Mayo and was shocked to even get this far, but then I got my hopes up. uggg 🙁 🙁

Hopefully the process is more kind to you.

I'm sorry to hear this. I just saw your MDApps, you are a Div I NCAA athlete, that is amazing! I'm sure you will get in some where, "HaveHope"

So I have to say I'm really impressed with Marcy at Mayo.

Mayo is the one school from which I never heard back after submission of my AMCAS application. Then, yesterday, I get an email from Marcy explaining that there was some sort of glitch in my application - one that no other school picked up on. After calling into the office, she went on to explain the steps I needed to take in order to get the ball rolling. She was a huge help and took the time to answer ALL of my questions.

I know it's late in the application cycle, but I got the glitched fixed and just paid the fee. Given that it's my birthday, being able to gain some closure was a nice present, especially since I've been crushing on Mayo for a long time. I guess we'll see...

Does any more recent interviewees know if Dr. Barrier mentioned when the next round of appointments are being made?

Don't give up hope, you still have a chance, you never know.

Marcy allowed me to add a LOR to my app after it was already sent for review, I don't know if that extra letter made a difference in getting interview invite or not, but if it did, it's a miracle 🙂

Nope. Marcy mentioned that they had given out appointments on 10/15 so it wouldn't be for at least 4 weeks... Which was yesterday...

Well, in a celebratory post-anatomy spirit ( :hardy: ) I thought I'd share some little tid bits of info:

Yup, Marcy rocks! 👍 Also, only about half of the invites have gone out so far, so don't count yourself out of the running just yet. Good luck to those waiting for an invite!

From what I've heard, there won't be any acceptances going out today. It's just an estimate, but some will probably be made before the end of this month (i.e., within the next two weeks). Which isn't really new news, but thought I'd share nonetheless. :luck:

Have a great weekend everyone!!! (Can you tell I'm in a :hardy: mood?)

Get off SDN, you should be taking your dog on a walk

Hah - it's the first thing I did after my exam, but I'll do so again now. 😀

Also, I just got some additional input that the next round of acceptances will most likely be next week.... :luck:

Fetch the ducks in the park? 🙂

Thanks for the info! Hopefully I'll get the call. It would be so ironic if Marcy calls while I am being grilled at WashU on Monday.

I also got a question actually. Do post-ranking update letters make a difference, since the rank won't change any more, will it?

This Tuesday I was notified my research grant proposal was accepted. It's a prestigious undergraduate senior honors thesis research grant awarded to only 15 people each year, out of probably 100-200 applicants, so I was wondering if I should send an update letter or not.

Thanks for the info, Phoenix 😉 I can't decide whether it's good to know or not... as in, if we didn't know we could go off on our merry way and not wait for our phone to ring... or we can wait for our phone to ring and then have it not ring... sigh..

So now that you've made it through anatomy and come out alive, will we see you around more? 😀

Oh my... I just got my ranked email a few days ago. I wonder if they'll be considering me this round. :scared:

Sure, send them a letter of update. It won't change your ranking, but since acceptances aren't made purely by ranking, that's irrelevant. A letter of update would work much like a letter of interest or intent. I.e., it will bring attention to your file/application and tell them something more about yourself that may be even more compelling as to why you should be admitted.

Thanks for the info, Phoenix 😉 I can't decide whether it's good to know or not... as in, if we didn't know we could go off on our merry way and not wait for our phone to ring... or we can wait for our phone to ring and then have it not ring... sigh..

I'll refrain from posting approximations as to when acceptances might go out. Wouldn't want to add to the anxiety. I do hope to be around a little more though. This coming week I'll be shadowing an interventional radiologist at Mayo for my first selective, and then I think I'll go home to Chicago and shadow an ENT or ER doc there.

Oh, and speaking of the end of anatomy, I just wanted to share that on our last day they brought in an orthopedic surgeon who did a demonstration of arthroscopic knee surgery. Then anyone who was interested got individual time to play with the scope and see how it worked inside a knee joint (obviously this was not on a living body if you get my drift). It was mind-blowing to use a scope and a probe and explore the inside of the knee myself. Wow. Just.....wow.

Oh my... I just got my ranked email a few days ago. I wonder if they'll be considering me this round. :scared:

I obviously don't know for certain, but if last year is anything to go by, then yes, you would be up for consideration when they give the next acceptances out. :luck::luck::luck: You'll know for certain though because if you don't get the call then next time the acceptances go out, but you were considered, then you'd get the "hold" email.

Good luck with the rest of the application cycle.

That's AWESOME. Something tells me you don't forget the anatomy of the knee after seeing something like that. 😱

This is probably a silly question, but out of curiosity, what exactly does an interventional radiologist do? I've heard a couple people mention the field recently but I hadn't heard of it before.

Incredible. I am REALLY hoping to hear back this week. I've been making a point of staying away from this thread but that's just not going to happen this week. Haha :luck: everybody!

Good luck to you too! Next week is going to be a torture.

I better get to bed, gotta get up in 6 hours for an interview 🙁

Thanks for the info, Phoenix. Oi. Waiting. Hopefully more than one person will post good news this time. Probably not, though.

I hope 🙂 Last round only 1 person from SDN got in, hopefully more will this time.

And yea, I woke up after 2 hours of sleep and can't fall asleep again. I slept too much on the way to st. louis 🙁

I wonder if they're going to re-send me a hold message.

I saw this and was going to say Good Luck, but now it's over... so How'd it go??

And pianola... my guess would be no, I think you only get it once and that's your status until you hear otherwise?

I know I said I didn't want to know so I didn't panic, but just out of curiosity, are appointments made on days of adcom meetings? As in, they will decide Thursday and people will hear Friday?
