That would probably make sense. Or they might do it on Wednesdays (10/15 was a Wednesday if I recall correctly). Or...right after the adcom meetings on Thursdays (not waiting until Friday).

OK, no more guessing. Anyone, know what the dates were last year?

Man, I've still got at least another month till I hear yay or nay on the interview... I hope that there will even be seats left by the time I could interview then get ranked, if I even interview! :uhno:

I saw this and was going to say Good Luck, but now it's over... so How'd it go??

And pianola... my guess would be no, I think you only get it once and that's your status until you hear otherwise?

I know I said I didn't want to know so I didn't panic, but just out of curiosity, are appointments made on days of adcom meetings? As in, they will decide Thursday and people will hear Friday?

Thanks! The interview itself went extremely well, I interviewed with a guy who basically pioneered his field at WashU, and brought the department from unranked/7 faculty members to top 1/2 ranked and 122 faculty members in 10 years, he's retired a few years ago though and mostly deals with admissions for med school and residency now, interviewing applicants.

He knew quite a bit about my home country and we talked about his experiences in my home city, about my country's food, restaurants in st. louis and madison, etc. Then it was on to research for a while, and then he asked me what I wanted to know. I was surprised he didn't ask me at all about "Why medicine" or "Why WashU". I can't gauge how he felt about me though, he did walk me 5 minutes to my lunch area, but he probably does it for every interviewee.

As far as I know, you only get the hold status email once. And last year appointments did not coincide with adcom meetings.

If you do a search for Mayo 2008 you can see our thread from last year and see the acceptance dates in our status list posted on most pages of that thread. But I'm pretty sure appointments are not necessarily made on adcom days. Of course, they could always coincide. :luck:

Darn, I thought I had safety until Thursday. I guess I could send the email and in it say that the paper version of LOI will arrive on Wednesday or something.

Sounds like it went really well! (and at least you had fun, it sounds like!)

Darn.. I was kind of hoping I could consider us all "safe" until Friday... 🙁

Oh well, I'm not expecting to get a call this time around, as much as I LOVE Mayo, I know I'm not near the tippy-top of applicants. I'll wait my turn, I just hope they move far enough down the list to get to me!

:luck::luck::luck:

I noticed at least a couple of people last year were taken from the hold list (and possibly others were as well but they decided not to post their hold status). That's pretty significant in a class of 50.

I'm not out yet!! Here's hoping 😉

So the ranked people will hear this Friday (11/21) as to Acceptance or Hold? Does anyone know this for certain?

Also, according to last year's thread: Mayo gave out acceptances on a Monday, two Wednesdays, and a Thursday (assuming I got my years correct: fall 2007 and spring 2008 were the dates of the application, right?)

Figure that one out 😉

So, assuming the tradition holds, it will either be Wednesday or Thursday then 🙂

Good luck all!

Heh, does 2x count as a tradition? Well, that's about as much as we're going to know about a school with only 50 matriculants per year 😛.

Here's hoping. :luck::luck::luck: guys!

But that's one of the unique and best things about Mayo 🙂 Lets hope there will be a lot of SDNers in the class next year so that we can call each other by SDN names 🙂

Heh, just do me a favor don't ever call me pianola.

Nope, not certain at all. Who said it would be on Friday specifically? I mean, it could be, but your guess as to the date is as good as mine. And I have no idea whatsoever.

Now for some more notes on how cool Mayo is. We're in our second selective period now, and this Mon, Tues and Wed I'm shadowing an interventional radiologist. Today was downright amazing, and I'm glad I'm doing this right after anatomy. When they say that they need to put a filter in to catch clots from a DVT and need to go in through the popliteal vein, I actually knew what was going on and could visualize it in my mind as well as in the ultrasound and fluoroscopy imaging. I saw angioplasties performed as well as filters, coils, catheters and shunts put into all manner of arteries and veins and it was absolutely amazing. I got to scrub in and assist, and the physician I'm shadowing is a Mayo med school and residency graduate and incredibly nice about explaining everything and including me in the procedures. I was there from 8am-6pm and couldn't have had a better day. Then I met up with classmates for sushi (an interviewee joined us too!) and came home to a happy but slightly rambunctious dog. Again, today was a great day. And seeing the application of the insanity that was so recently named anatomy made me even happier.

I'm still waiting for confirmation, but I should be shadowing some orthopedic surgeons at Mayo this Thursday and/or Friday. I asked to see a hip replacement surgery, and I'm just hoping I don't pass out despite how amazing it will be to observe. Then next Mon, Tues and Wed I'm going home to Chicago, but got a contact from the dean for a great ENT doctor to shadow at Rush while I'm home. Pretty psyched! I LOVE selectives. What other school lets you experience so many different aspects of medicine as part of your first and second year? It also really helps you get perspective on why you're learning what you're learning (which although obvious can get obscured at times), and recharge for the next block. I'm undecided on what I'll do for the December selective, but will probably go in February with a large group of first and second years to the Dominican Republic for a Mayo-facilitated trip to provide health care to the underserved. Have I said recently how much I love Mayo? 😍

The reason I thought Friday was because Copperfrog mentioned hoping we'd be "safe" until Friday. I must have misunderstood.

Selectives seem to be really awesome. Just crossing my fingers that I will have the opportunity to partake!

Wow. That sounds amazing. One my my my recent interviewers was an interventional radiologist and both of you guys have made it sound like extremely interesting work. Congrats on finishing anatomy! I can almost feel the collective sigh of relief from your class now that it's selective time. 🙂

i'm not even part of this app cycle and i'm already in love with mayo ..... 😀

good luck to everyone!!!!!!

Can anyone who has interviewed at Mayo this cycle tell me a little bit about the structure of the interview day. I am interviewing this Friday and just want to prepare myself on what to expect. Thanks again for your help.....soooooo excited to finally see Mayo!

Structure depends on your actual schedule, which you will get first thing in the morning. It's been 3 weeks since I interviewed, but I'll do my best:

Arrive at 8 AM
Get your photo taken
8 - 9: Orientation by Marcy regarding the interview day and the application process
9 - 10: Meet with Dean Porter (same room) regarding Mayo's curriculum, student body, etc

After this point, you will have two 1 hour interviews, two 1 hour "explore mayo clinic", and one tour given by a med student. The day ends at 4:00 PM with a meeting with Dean Barrier. The order depends on your particular schedule.

Lunch goes from 12:00 to 1:00 at a cafeteria, there will be a few med students there to chat with.

They also give you a sheet of fun things that you can explore on your own time at Mayo and at Rochester. If you have time after your interview day I highly recommend visiting some of them.

I guess it wasn't today. Maybe tomorrow? Or maybe I'll get the hold email at 1:27 AM tomorrow morning.

Speaking of which, I was thinking today that Mayo ought to have someone make the calls at 1:28 AM, just to keep with tradition 😀

Haha. On interview day Marcy joked that a member of the admissions staff sends out the emails at home manually at 1:30 AM or so.

PS. We are approaching the 24 pages of Mayo 2008. Keep up the good work and the rich tradition of Mayo 200_ threads!

Haha, lets all be thankful that they don't do that. I would have some serious problems sleeping.

Phoenix--

I spent a summer working/shadowing interventional radiologists and invasive cardiologists. It is some very interesting stuff. There is so SO much recent innovation in this field. Let us know how the ENT goes, I have thought of trying to shadow one at my school!

By the way on our 24 pages....

Gloryfield I'm pretty sure that you are responsible for at least half of them. So YOU keep up the good work, haha 😀

Heh, I try. here's one more towards the effort.

Sorry.. didn't mean to confuse you! I was just wondering if decisions were made on Thursdays when the adcom meets to review applications, but then someone said that wasn't the case.. which means any day is fair game!

...Is it bad if to occupy my time, I am online looking at apartments near a school I haven't even been accepted to yet? sigh...

Mayo invited me for an interview 🙂
Let me join in on Mayo craziness! I'm not sure where I rank Mayo among the other schools I have interviews for, but the only thing I know about it is that it has a really famous clinic and the class size is really small! Can't wait to visit, but I'm scared of what the weather will be like in mid-Dec .... Did you guys stay with student hosts or at a hotel nearby??

I stayed with a nice student host (I don't think there are any non-nice hosts there), but if you prefer, there's the grand khaler hotel you can stay at for $45, and it's connected to the clinic through tunnels.

In mid dec there will probably be snow on the ground, some snow showers, and quite cold.

Congrats on interview!

Spidermann, PredmedIowa -- congratulations.
When were you complete at Mayo ?
Can you please provide LOR date, complete date ?

Thanks a bunch

Sure, let me look that stuff up.

AAMC Submitted: July 19
AAMC complete: Aug 12

Mayo Request for LOR: Aug 29
LOR Received: Oct 2

Thanks. I just looked at your MDapp profile and it is ammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmaaaaaaaaaaazing !

So I guess the calls might come either tomorrow or Friday, or perhaps next week?

Congrats on the interview invites, spidermann and PremedIowa! I'm confident you'll fall in love with Mayo when you're here. We've got the top brain mayonizing specialists in the country. 😉 If you haven't already, you should be getting an email soon from one of our class reps asking if you'd like a student host. I highly recommend the experience, as you'll get much more insight on what it's like as a student here, and likely get to meet other students the night before your interview during dinner. But if you'd prefer a hotel, the Kahler is a great deal, and ridiculously convenient. I interviewed the first week of December last year, and it was COLD and there was serious snow accumulation. If I were you, I would try not to schedule the last flight out either on your way to MN, or back, as there tends to be flight delays. My flight from Chicago to Rochester was fine, but there was a three hour delay going back home. And if you need to make connections, things could get dicey. Flying into Minneapolis is probably a lot cheaper, and there is about a one hour shuttle that will take you to Rochester, so just book whatever is cheaper or more convenient. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

Anyway, I'm on a total (no pun intended) high right now. I shadowed an orthopedic surgeon today, and got to assist on two total hip replacements and three total knee replacements. I don't think I've ever really wished before that I was taller and stronger, but perhaps that's because I never quite realized just how heavy a human leg was before today. Needless to say, the surgeon was amazing, the residents and staff were excellent, the procedure was mind-blowing, and I can't wait to see and do more on Friday!

Phoenix-
Thanks a lot for your input! I'm glad that I don't have back-to-back interviews after Mayo then! I'll be flying in to Rochester the night before my interview (around 10pm) so I guess that's kind of risky 🙁 but I have an interview the day before ..gah.. Do you know if Dec. 19th is in the middle of your vacation? I have a feeling there aren't going to be many students around to host me that day, although I'd love to stay with a student host.... Thanks again!

Thanks for the offer, Phoenix. I got those emails, but I actually live in Rochester and have worked at Mayo for a few summers. So if anyone is interested in doing anything while in Rochester, feel free to ask!

Anyway, I'm on a total (no pun intended) high right now. I shadowed an orthopedic[bold] surgeon [/bold]today

The, evil, seductive, field of surgery 🙂

I wanted to do radiology until I shadowed card surgery for 2 weeks.

Hey Guys,

To be honest, I haven't been reading this thread, because I applied so long ago and thought since I had not heard anything, there was no chance of an interview for me! Low and behold, I just received an interview invite today, and am extremely ecstatic.

I am a male, 23 years old, and I was just wondering, do any of you Mayo students know of any hosting program. I would love to stay with a student on my trip, obviously for financial reasons, but also because that would give me a great chance to get to know the students.

If anyone is willing, or knows anyone, can you message me!?

Thanks again,
ganesh

You should be receiving an email from two med students (Paul and Bri) in a couple of days about Mayo's student hosting program.

Congrats!

Spidermann, PredmedIowa -- thanks for providing those dates. Looks like ~ 7 weeks between complete and interview invite. I was complete on Oct 14th. May be I will hear yes/no by the second week of December then.

Congratulations to both of you. You will do great in interviews.

Congrats and Good Luck to Spidey, PreMedIowa and Ganesha!! 😀:luck:

Guys, this is a bad Mayo day for me... I've been trying so hard to avoid this thread, to think about something other than the fact that calls might be going out this week, to look at other schools to think about where I might want to be in the fall when I don't get into Mayo, but I just keep coming back to Mayo...

Sigh... this week is almost over... It doesn't seem likely that calls would go out on a Friday, when they are busy interviewing on Fridays, right?

Oi. I know I said I didn't want to know, but any word on whether anything's gone out this week/ will go out tomorrow? Anyone want to call and see if they've given out any more spots since 10/15?

I feel the same way, I don't think that I can handle any more anxiety :scared:. I haven't heard anything either. All I can do is keep our fingers crossed. :luck::luck::luck: to everyone waiting.

Same feelings as you guys. Everytime I get on the Pre-Allo forum and see mayo up near the top I think acceptances went out.

If they call for acceptances and send hold emails at the same time we should know if they did make some appointments. I'm thinking of calling Marcy tomorrow afternoon...we'll see.

well, we'll know by 8PM EST if any calls went out today. If it's not today it will probably be tomorrow.

Yeah, assuming that they send out hold notices at that point.

The other thing I didn't mention is that I got my hold notice at 8pm the day AFTER thegetupkid was accepted...

So...for all we know, people were accepted yesterday and we won't find out until 8pm tonight.

All this is assuming that hold notices are sent out consistently at the same time.

So who knows?

Hey, hey, hey.. no negativity 😉 My guess is that if acceptances went out, SOMEONE on SDN would have heard something.

And something tells me you get in this time around, pianola 😉 so we'll wait till you post about your phone call.

This is madness.
