so how is everyone going about picking a medical school? second look weekends? finances? ahhh this is going to be so difficult!😳

So does Mayo for sure have a second look weekend?

they do have a second look weekend, but I am just not sure when. When I asked at the interview, they said it was in the spring-- but I was just wondering if anyone knew which weekend it was.

Nice! Now I just need to get an acceptance!

Happy New Year Mayo Friends! I firmly hope 2009 will be a great year for all of us Mayo hopefuls!

Just a question...when is the first day of classes for M1 students at Mayo in the Fall of 2009? Or when did they start last year?

Thanks!

I was ranked on a thursday and got the hold email the next monday. Is that a bad sign?

not really, it just means you made the cut for that round of appointments but weren't selected. Only 4 people on SDN got in so far

A friend of mine just got accepted at stanford and cancelled his Mayo interview scheduled for mid Jan, hopefully someone on SDN gets his slot

Any ideas on when the next round is going out???

Any ideas on when the next round is going out???

Looking through last years thread, 2 rounds of acceptances went out in January (16th and 30ish). But since last year no acceptances went out in December I would only expect one round of acceptances this month. I would predict it would be towards the end of the month. There are only 18 appointments to go out still so I would imagine 6-8 would go out in January with similar numbers in February and March.

Can someone provide a link to Mayo Residency Match List ? Do you know if students do clinical rotations in the 3rd year in Boston or New York ? If so, what percentage ? Does Mayo expect (or prefer) that the students stay @ Mayo for rotations and then for residency ?

Thanks a bunch

"Ninety-five percent of Mayo fourth-year students match with one of their top three residency choices."

If you go to Mayo, you will probably get one of the positions you want, regardless of where that is. They do not expect everyone to stay to do residency there, but a large proportion of students do choose to do so.

Most medical schools expect you to do most of your rotations at the school's affiliated hospital, but most provide ample opportunities to do a few rotations elsewhere. If you are that passionate about being in Boston or New York, you might be happier attending school there. As a townie, I love Rochester to death, but people used to larger cities tend to have a little bit of culture shock there.

In summary, go on second looks to all the schools you are interested in to make sure that you are making the right choice.

They were okay with me doing some of the rotations at military hospitals, so I would think there is a little wiggle room. It was only a couple of the 4 year rotations though, so they expect you to do most of your rotations there.

Any ideas on when the next round is going out???

bump to this question... i'm a lurker who's been trying to stay away from this thread but I need to know! I'm still holding out hope for Mayo
Monday is 4 weeks from the last set of decisions it sounds like... Any word?

I'll make protein shake dessert

Ick! Cookies ought to do the trick, there's nothing in this world a good cookie can't get ya 😉

Has anyone ever made the cake mix cookies?? Those are my faaaavorite 🙂

FYI, Mayo's last year's class and this year's class will have FIFTY students, not forty-two. You gotta subtract all the specialty students to get the real MD numbers, of which I know 6 are MD/PhD.

Yep, 50 students - 6 MD/PhD - 2 OMFS = 42 MD Students

Absolutely wonderful experience. Everyone is kind, gracious, and considerate. For being the most selective medical school in US, as well as one of the best hospitals in the world, there is an air of humility that permeates the place. They are the best in the world at what they do, but you would not know it from talking to the faculty and staff. I would be both thrilled and honored to be accepted there. The other students interviewing with me were awesome as well.

Best of luck to all of you. If you are going to interview and have some questions, you are more than welcome to PM me.

Couldn't agree more. My visit was very similar! The people were great, the facilities are amazing and everyone just looked happy to be there.

FYI there is now a "Mayo Medical School Class of 2013" Facebook group. 🙂

I also agree completely!! Good luck to you! If Mayo is your top choice, make sure you write excellent/genuine thank you letters and a letter of intent - I think this helped me significantly.

Does any recent interviewees know when next batch of appointments are going out? Will there be one for January? All I can do for now is stalk the facebook group 🙁

I didn't interview recently but looking at the facebook group it looks like a current student said there would not be any appointments until February. She said there would be around 10. I don't know if this is correct but it would make a lot of sense. That would still leave around 8 appointments to go out around March 15.

I called today and Carmen said there was definitely a possibility of another set going out this week or next week. 😀

Time will tell. Until then, I will run for my phone every time it rings.

Nice! Thanks for letting us know. Did you just recently get ranked? Good Luck!
