Hi guys,

I have an interview at Mayo in January and the information e-mail said that the interview day finishes ~4pm. However, the latest flight out of Rochester to Boston is 5:10 pm and when I e-mailed the PC, she said that it's fine to get that flight. For those of you who may have already interviewed there, would I be missing something important if I left early? And does the interview day really finish around 4 pm?

If the PC told you it's fine, don't worry about it.

A few thoughts:
1. Keep in mind that Rochester, MN airport is not huge--like 5 or 6 gates. Navigating this airport/security/etc. is not going to take a long time.
2. How much you may "miss" at the end of the day (when everyone is tired and starting to tune out anyhow) will depend on what specialty you are interviewing for and how many other people are interviewing that day. If the PC told you it would be fine to make your 5 pm flight by leaving slightly early, they aren't planning any crucial stuff at the end of the day.

I don't know if this is true for your specialty, but for psych, Mayo actually does their interview dinner AFTER the interview, on the same day. And they pay for a hotel on the night before AND the night after. So that might be something to consider.

For IM interviews, the dinner is the night before and they pay for only one night.

Well, for *most* IM interviews (FTFY)

One of the programs where I am interviewing at set up a dinner/meet and greet the evening after the interview. Also, much to my dismay, only one of the programs I will be interviewing at (out of 12) has paid for 1 night at a hotel 🙁

I think the thread was specifically about Mayo.

But regarding IM interviews in general, A good number of them have basically said something like "We interview 4-5 days a week, but our dinner is always on day X. You're welcome to come if you can make it." If my interview is on Thursday and the dinner is Tuesdays only, I can't see how they'd look down at me for not being able to make it. So far I'm lucky enough I'm driving to most of my interviews and staying with friends/family, so I can make it to (almost) all the dinners, but I'm fairly sure it doesn't matter.

And no one has offered to pay for hotels for me yet.
