Hi everyone - Looks like there's some old forums on this out there, but nothing recent.

I'm deciding between WashU and Emory, and after visiting Emory, I was so impressed by their network that I became more wary of WashU's newer program. However, they have an option to tack on and MBA dual degree for little additional time/cost. Their business network is extensive and includes healthcare and non-profits. Also, I already have an established business background so I would continue to add depth to that with an MBA.

So, I went ahead and applied since yesterday was the deadline. I won't hear back about this until as late as maybe June. It would be a really big leap of faith to assume I'd get in, but the MPH is my main goal anyway.

My question here is: Is anyone else applying to MPH/MBA programs, or have you considered it, or are otherwise familiar with them? What specific career paths could this dual degree lead to other than consulting? Any other input on the value of adding the MBA?

Thanks as always!

Hi @KPZ ,

I applied to MBA/MPH programs last year. I applied to Johns Hopkins and Emory last year for their dual degree programs. Competition for admissions is very steep; only a handful of students are selected to be a part of these programs (10-15). I'm not sure where you are in your career, however most students in these programs bring a good 5-7 years of solid work experience with them, many related to healthcare in one way or another.

If you're interested in working in consulting, especially for a large management consulting firm like Deloitte or McKinsey, an MBA/MPH will definitely be an invaluable asset for you. People who attend MBA/MPH programs usually work in management consulting, investment banking/venture capital, and other areas of business that are related to the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry (Biotech, pharma, medical devices, etc.). It really depends on how you tailor your coursework and field experience (practicum/capstone/internships/etc.).

Adding an MBA on to your MPH and BA/BS will definitely make you more marketable than someone with just a background in public health. You will acquire skill sets that are custom to business, while still gaining knowledge on important public health trades and concepts.

One thing you can do that I typically do when I'm interested in what people with certain degrees are doing post-grad school, is utilize LinkedIn to search alumni of these programs and to see where they are today. For example, check this query out for a list of MBA/MPH degree holders from Emory. https://www.linkedin.com/edu/alumni?id=18153&facets=&keyword=MBA/MPH&dateType=attended&startYear=&endYear=&incNoDates=true&start=0&count=10&filters=on.

Thank you! This was very helpful. It does seem like a good opportunity to broaden my skill-set if I'm accepted to the MBA. Business skills are always needed.
