I know they're not the same and I know that the MCAT is a little tougher than the DAT. I want to know can a person do well on the DAT by studying and practicing for the MCAT. I know the DAT has a math section in it, but I wanted to know are the other sections similar to the MCAT material such as the Biology and Chemistry?

also, MCAT > DAT

:meanie:

I know, but I wanted to know if I decided to quit the MCAT and try for DAT, will I be able to do well on the DAT.....since its a little easier? I've worked in dental clinics and hospitals, so i don't know what type of doctor I want to be for sure. I really liked both, so I'm trying for Medical school first, if that doesn't work, then I'll go for Dental school. I know Dental school will be easier, but I wanted to know how much studying will be required if I decided to make the switch from MCAT to DAT.

I hate this MCAT test, its the only thing in my way....arrghh 😡

DAT also has a perceptual ability section. My wife took the MCAT and I took the DAT. I used a lot of her materials to study for the DAT (Kaplan for the most part) and did very well. The subject material that is tested on is almost identical after comparing notes with my wife, however, it's the format of the tests that make the MCAT more difficult. The DAT has straightforward multiple choice Q's whereas the MCAT has Q's based on reading passages. The MCAT also has physics (which is a difficult and conceptual discipline).
Count yourself fortunate that they changed the time scale to 4 hours. It doesn't hold a candle to the older format.

Are you saying that they changed the DAT format to 4 hours?

So you are going to let a standardized test decide what type of doctor you want to be?

I took the DAT my sophomre year and I got a 25, I loved the PAT section, but to answer your question, yes you can do well on the DAT by studying for the MCAT. However, you must be aware of the fact that the organic chemistry on the MCAT is much easier than what you will find on the DAT and also, the biological section on the DAT also contains a lot more evolutionary/ecological biology and a lot less physiology than on the MCAT.

Thanks a lot for the detail. That clears up a couple of questions.

My bud took a practice DAT for fun and did very well and he hasn't broken 30 yet on the MCAT. For what its worth.

Mc = D?

? = Mc / D

mmm... mcdonalds.

ps

D,A,T apparently doesn't equal zero.

Crazy, my bud took the MCAT for ****s and giggles and got a 34 and only got a 19 on the DAT.

Uh, no. DAT = ~4 hours long if I recall correctly. Didn't they change the MCAT from 8 hours to 4 hours or so?

It used to be a lot longer but that had a lot to do with the general inefficiency of paper as well. They did reduce questions a bit too I think.

I actually took both, I spent nearly 6 months and at least three hours a day preparing for the MCAT. I spent about 2 months for the DAT. I thought the DAT was an easier test. The PAT portion is really different but the science section of the DAT is not as intense as the MCAT.

There's no doubt that the DAT is an easier test. I wonder if they'll begin to make it a lot harder now that more and more people are choosing to get into the field...

Only the testmakers know for sure. My uncle is a family doctor, he has two sons, one is a Dentist, the other is a Doctor, they all said I should go into Dentistry. The one who is a Dentist is busy building up his practice but works 9-5, the one who is a doctor is an overworked and underpaid resident with three small kids to feed, he said its going to be years before he sees a paycheck that his Dentist brother is already getting, so its becoming known that Dentists have a better lifestyle.

Yeah they do and also have the highest suicide rate ...............wait..thats not funny!! 🙁

That was an old wives tale, in reality certain physician specialties have high suicide rates, Anesthesiologists have the highest rates of suicide, they have access to medication that can kill.
