I'm a non-trad looking to apply next summer for the 2019-2020 application cycle. Typically people looking to apply during that time take the MCAT during the January-May season. In order to maximize the amount of time that I'd have to study, I'm considering taking it this August. Aside from reducing the number of cycles that my score would be valid from 3 to 2, would there be any other negative effects on my application?

There will be no other negative effects on your application simply due to taking it in August. Also, on a positive note, the amount of time that your MCAT score remains valid is highly-dependent on which medical schools you apply to, so it may be valid longer than 2 cycles for many medical schools. 🙂
