@gyngyn @Goro @Catalystik @LizzyM, would any of you mind fielding this one? I don't want to post this on the pre-med forum.

Let's say that a friend of mine recently got hired to teach MCAT prep for Kaplan. She doesn't want to start teaching her first class until at least summer, though, because she needs the little free time she has left before then to do other things, and she doesn't absolutely need the extra money right now. Also, she's already teaching reading and writing SAT prep classes and Spanish.

1. My question is, would teaching an MCAT class in addition to this before applying be a significant help to the application? I know on that survey of adcomm members, teaching experience was rated of low importance relative to other factors. I also feel like her MCAT score is sufficient evidence of her ability to master the MCAT material. So am I right in thinking it makes essentially no difference to her app whether she starts MCAT teaching before or after applying? Or is there an additional intangible that this experience would add to an app?

2. That being said, the hiring process for Kaplan is competitive and challenging, so might it be a valuable feather in the cap to mention? In addition, the hiring director told my friend that she got unusually excellent comments from the veteran Kaplan teacher who she did a practice teaching session cum interview with. Would it be possible to add this tidbit to her AMCAS activities section in the same box where she lists her other teaching activities, even if she hasn't actually started teaching Kaplan classes yet? Or is that just ridiculous?

I've seen plenty of Kaplan teaching listed on applications but I've never heard it mentioned as a feather in anyone's cap to have taught or to be teaching for Kaplan. I doubt that it would matter to adcoms if someone had done this or not.

That she has had some teaching/tutoring experience is good but it sounds like she's got this covered with SAT prep and Spanish.

Fantastic, I think she'll be happy to put it in the "unnecessary" pile. Thank you.

Agree with the other responses. She already has teaching experience with the SAT, which can look good on an app and give something to discuss during interviews. An additional experience with teaching won't add too much, even if it's for a medically-related test.

I taught for Kaplan. It did not help at any point on my application process, but it did at least pay well.
