If you understand and know the equations...it just takes a bunch of practice. You'll start seeing which equations to use under which circumstances. Sometimes, there's multiple ways to get an answer...but one way is faster.

OP - you use the equation that has the givens from your prompt. Usually only one will have the right combination of terms to allow you to solve. You do that a bunch of times and it starts to get pretty intuitive.
