I'm a nontrad, having to take the new MCAT exam - aiming for April. Does anyone have any reviews/thoughts about test prep companies besides Kaplan and Princeton? I took both review courses about 3-4 years ago, but honestly didn't get much out of them. I thought PR material was more comprehensive than Kaplan.

With the format changing, I'm not sure if I want to go with PR again or maybe try something that's more geared to my problem areas. I want to go with a company vs studying on my own because of the new changes -- I think having a tutor/review course would help me fill in my gaps and unfamiliarity.

Any thoughts? Any advice would be much appreciated.

I took the MCAT last year and for that MCAT, your plan would be the best one I could come up with. Self study diligently and meet with a tutor regularly to cover anything that doesn't quite make sense. A good tutor can also help with strategy and skill building as needed. Try to find someone who scored well on the MCAT recently. Some tutoring companies let you try out different tutors and pick your own tutor.

For the 2014 MCAT, the best science books in my opinion were Examkrackers - but you had to truly understand almost everything in those books. And for verbal reasoning, there was no match for AAMC's passages. A very distant second would be Princeton Review's VR Workbook. There have been many discussions on here recently about which books cover the topics unique for 2015 the best. IMO, the jury is still out on that.
