If I was in that situation, I'd take the gap year and improve my application during that year. Doing so, I would maintain a good relationship with my PI, focus on my classes, use the summer to prepare for the MCAT, and strengthen my overall application with some ECs. Do not neglect the importance of having solid ECs.

I'm working full time and studying for the MCAT. It's really not that bad. I don't have a life outside of work and studying, but that's just something you have to come to terms with when you want to go into medicine. 4 months of studying should be plenty in your situation.

It all really depends on your level of knowledge and how much of studying you need to get in. You could take a couple AAMC full-length tests and see how you do on average (an n=1 is not enough). Most people study full-time but not all can afford to drop their job or have to finish up course-work for graduation. Find out what shape you are in for the MCAT and then decide.
