Other people have suggested to me to read the New York Times.
on the last page of Time magazine, there is usually an Essay that is one page long. it is quite good bc it's about the right length and always about all different topics.
WSJ is also good.

NY Times, Time magazine, and the WSJ are all good...just remember to keep doing mental summaries as you read.
here's a hint-- read stuff you think is boring. most of the passages on the mcat are boring so it's good to have practice reading less than interesting material.

hey man,
i find the articles in playboy very helpful. especially the ones that are not cluttered by all those annoying nudes photos. they're about the right length and difficulty and most are extremely boring, that's why i think the magazine sells mainly due to the annoying pictures. always willing to help,

I don't know about you guys, but I didn't find reading magazines helpful at all.
What I did find helpful was waking up early and doing verbal passages every morning. Pretty much I worked on my technique, timing and reading speed. Eventually I was able to score 11-13 on the kaplan and aamc passages. I wasn't able to do so just reading magazines.

I dont think reading mags, etc will help. I think it comes to practice practice pratice. Get lots o' verbal passages, and do them frequently. And dont do just one. Do at least 3-4 at a time. Half the battle is stamina. Get the aamc verbal practive items, the columbia review verbal, and whatever you can ypur hands on. ANd obviously also get all the aamc exams as well as full lengths.

I personally know of a guy who scored 5 points higher on the Verbal section the second time he took it by reading the New Yorker extensively. Some other good ones are the New York Book Review and Harper's, very boring and MCAT like in writing.
When you people read the WSJ, NY Times, Economist, Times, News Week or etc, what do you look for. I mean do you just read for an hour or two and that's it. Yes, you would think of the main idea but what else do you look for since they are not question to be answered?

I did in fact enjoy most of the passages I came across on the MCAT. However, when I encountered a difficult, boring one, I would try to pretend that it was extremely interesting. It worked.
Having a positive attitude really helps on the verbal section. Read The Atlantic Monthly if you want practice.
