Is it just me or is the SAT Critical Reading far more difficult than the MCAT Verbal? Is the MCAT Verbal testing English Comprehension and recall?

I took the AAMC 3 (I'm going into my Freshman Year of college and haven't touched an MCAT book in my life) and got a 14. It seemed as though 1/2 of the questions asked, what is x? The passage says "x is caused by y" verbatim. It seems as though if you skim the passages and use test taking skills you can get a perfect score.

So my question is, what is the MCAT Verbal testing to see?

Uhh it's testing to see if you can read good.

Keep in mind that AAMC test 3 in deceptively easy (8, 9, & 10 are the best).

Part of being a doctor is being able to read critically and absorb information well. They are testing this as well as making sure that you have a firm grasp of the english language.

If you are getting 13+ though its nice to know that you have whatever they are looking for!

it's just you

Moving to MCAT forum.

The entire MCAT tests your deductive reasoning.

I think you mean "It's testing to see if you can read well."

Grammar Nazi strikes again! Sieg Heil!
:smack: I know....it's from Zoolander, i.e. the Zoolander Center For Kids Who Can't Read Good.

You took a 7-8 year old test. It was easier 6 years ago. Yes its reading comprehension but its pretty tricky.

Try one of the more recent tests and see how you do.

Ok, it might be easier but if you got a 14 then you're doing very well. If you take 8, 9, or 10 and granted they might be more difficult, with practice (or maybe without, I don't know how good you are) you will still get around a 14. A 14 in verbal is amazing, not many people get a 14.

To give you an idea, I got an 11 on my verbal this summer on the real MCAT. My percentile for an 11 was 83.5-95.4. I don't know why it's such a wide range, but think of what the percentile would be if I got a 14 since the highest end for me is a 95.4!

Yeah when you get up to 13, 14, and 15 its literally just a question or two between points. Its nice because theoretically it should be easy to move up. It sucks because at some point its just luck.

The entire MCAT tests your deductive reasoning.

Philosophy major perspective:

Not really, if anything it tests informal reasoning.

I have taken a years worth of logic, and there is rarely anything in the MCAT verbal that can be reduced to deductive logic.

Most of the reasoning are filled with gaps, which bothered me sometimes while I took the test. Even the philosophy passages weren't the hardcore technical philosophy types I read.

Yeah, I feel luck is a factor too. Even the exam krackers guy said that students that get those scores say they had to guess on a lot of the questions.

Yeah, I wouldn't say the MCAT is deductive reasoning.

Isn't deductive reasoning as so:

Everyone who loves syrup is a spaghetti monster.
Joe loves syrup.
Therefore Joe is a spaghetti monster.

I didn't really see any of that type of reasoning on the MCAT, at least I don't think ha ha.

Ohhh you are so cool bethany and smart and talented and ... a premed? But yeah, I hope you don't have a boyfriend cause your 14 MCAT verbal is a major turn on. 😍
