mcat without orgo 2?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I took it without Orgo 2 my first time and then took it again after taking orgo 2 and while I'm sure people will tell you "it'll be fine" I'd say:

1)At least for me, I felt the orgo was much easier 2nd time around, I guess because orgo 2 was fresh on my mind and it made sense.

2)It depends on what your orgo 1 class teaches; for example if they leave some concept to be taught in orgo 2 that's part of the tested material then you may have a harder time than if your school's Orgo program addresses all the MCAT material.

Hope that helps even though it's a sort of ambiguous answer. My thought though it's probably not what you want to hear, is take it after Orgo 2. Orgo 2 really helped solidify the concepts for me and made the Orgo on the exam easier. Best of luck!

i guess it depends on what test form you get. some BS sections have very little orgo so it probably wouldn't matter. but if you were unlucky to get a form that had a lot of orgo....then it really might affect your performance.

bottom line---it's always best to wait and take the mcat when you feel comfortable and are well prepared.

I think you need to take orgo 2, or be taking it when you take the MCAT.

I took it without Orgo II and I didn't do too bad (10 on the BS). I had only taken basic biology and immunology before hand in night courses as well.

For every single one of the AMCAS practice tests, the Organic Chemistry portion of the biological sciences is between 25-30% of that section.

When I took the real thing it seemed like the practice tests were good indicators of how much Organic would be on it. Much more genetics on the real thing than I had expected.

I suppose taking Organic II before hand might get you an extra point on the BS section...maybe.

It also comes down to timing. I wanted to get in this application cycle and there was no way for me to take the class before the MCAT...if you have time to take it why not?

I took it without orgo 1 or 2....
and ended up with a 9 on bio...

I'll say it wasn't the orgo though... the orgo saved me lol... my bio passages were killer.

If you're willing to study enough... you can teach yourself these things...

i took orgo 1 like.....3 years ago and didn't have time to review orgo that much. I had a lot of orgo passages too....i got a 13 in BS. Except i had to guess a lot and wasn't too sure. I should've reviewed orgo more but i'm really happy about the score. I think if you don't take orgo 2 DEF have orgo 1 fresh in your mind.

Are you comfortable with aldol condensations? Knoevenagel condensations? Carbohydrate nomenclature? The Michael? This is all fair game. Orgo I is nuts and bolts. You won't get to the major reactions till orgo II. These are favorite MCAT questions. You can't rely on other people's anecdotal evidence in deciding when to take the MCAT. This is not a test to play around with. If you are already fluent with Orgo II chemistry, are taking AAMC practice tests and are scoring well on them (assume that your real score will go DOWN from your best practice test) and you have taken a LOT of practice tests (all the AAMC tests at least) then you can go ahead and consider taking the MCAT without orgo II. Not until. I have seen too many people take this test "just to see" without being solid on the material. It is very discouraging to be in the position of having to retake to improve a bad score. Some do not recover and abandon medicine. That's what practice tests are for. Screw up on them. Don't take the real MCAT until you know you are ready.
