  1. Pre-Health (Field Undecided)
I am scheduled to take the mcat tomorrow but i don't think I'm ready because I've been struggling with some family issues (health problem) for the past month. I know my practice scores are not competitive so I will be retaking the exam in June/July and feel it would be best to just reapply next year. But I don't know if I should just take the exam tomorrow morning and get it scored or void? I kind of want to take it but void the score so I have an idea. I don't want a poor score to lower my chances for next year. Opinions please! I talked to one school and told me not to take if I'm not ready and I don't get arefund

Hey Katie sorry to hear this.

You said your scores were not competitive.... are you scoring under 20?

If you are getting 20 or higher on the practice tests I say take it and try to focus as best as you can. What is the WORST that can happen?

The WORST that can happen is you get a poor score... say a 15 or 16...

Then where are you? You already paid for it. You are in the same place as you are currently. You take it again and score > 20 and you are in.

All professional schools that take the MCAT, be it MD/DO/Carib/whatever can understand doing poorly one one test as long as you dont do bad a second time.

If in the interview they asked you why you did bad the first time you can say because of family issues that happened and everyone will understand.

I think you have nothing to loose and everything to gain by taking it tomorrow.

If you are not going to submit, do NOT bother taking it. You are just exposing yourself for future questioning later that may harm your application.

If you do well, you don't have to worry. Whatever happened to self-confidence?

you cant get your money back...right? after a certain date?

Thanks for the quick replies. Since I already paid for the test I might as well take it and see where I'm at. I know I wont do worse the second time because I know I can atleast score a 24- so if I get a poor score tomorrow but score above a 22 the 2nd time, I shouldn't have a problem getting in, right? Thanks
If I wait to reapply I could take 1 or 2 upper science courses as well which will help

Could one still get a scholarship if they did poorly the first time?

Take the test. I know a guy who took the test and got a 12. He retook it, did a lot better, and now he's in 2nd year of pod school. The 12 never even came up in his interview. There are schools that will let you in with <20 as long as your GPA is ok. You paid for it, take it. You may surprise yourself and score a 18-20. You can get in with 18-20. Say you score a 9 or something, just retake it anyway. Rescheduling the test is more money and chances are you will score no more then than you are now unless you have not studied 1 day. Take the test now, and wait to get your score next month. Then, if score is bad, retake in july.

Thanks for all of the advice! I decided to take it and have it scored so I will see in May. I will continue to review the material lightly, take more practice tests and retake when everything settles down...I am leaning towards reapplying this fall so I have more time to spend with family. I was only able to take two practice tests, I got a 22 on #3 but I didn't score the second one, I just focused on why I got questions wrong and studied the topics I was weak on. I felt the real mcat was much more difficult than #3, but I wasn't nervous so hopefully the curve will help-I still am planning to retake though. Thanks again for all the help and good luck to those who are starting this summer/fall!

Just for future reference the higher in number you go on the official MCAT practice exams the harder they get. So practice exam #10 will be more like the real thing in terms of difficulty. Or at least that was my experience. For me, exam #3 was by far the easiest.

I recommend taking all of them, or as many as you can afford. It will increase your score because half of that test is learning to take the test.
