Well now that I've gotten off the waitlist at Mercer I'll be dropping my waitlist position at MCG. I hope that helps someone else here out.

Congrats on Mercer!

wow that is preety amazing that you would give up your position at mcg even though mcg is so much cheaper to attend.

It's also about preference. I was really impressed w/ MCG and Mercer but after sitting down and soul searching a while ago (after the initial feeling of "whoever accepts me first gets me!") I had rather settled on going to Mercer. First of all I can save quite a bit (relatively) by living at home, I felt a better vibe from the medical students at Mercer than at MCG (but that may well have been luck of the draw as to who was giving the tours while I was there), I think I like the idea of a smaller class and the problem based learning, Mercer students on average score higher on their boards I've heard - probably a product of the problem based learning system, and finally Mercer is a bit closer to Savannah (in terms of driving time) than Augusta which means I'll be able to spend more time with my wife who will be in Savannah for about another 9 months after I start at Mercer while she finishes up her Pham.D at South University. Aditionally I worry that if I were to get a call from MCG today and I had to look for an apartment I may not be able to get anything close to campus or I'd be stuck getting something expensive which means I'd have to take out larger loans and thus bring the cost of going to MCG marginally closer to that of going to Mercer. I'm already paying for one apartment here in Savannah for my wife and I, I'd really rather not have to get a second especially if it is anywhere near as expensive as this apartment is.

Alright, it is now May 18. Time to start making some phone calls MCG. Good luck to all!

Yeah, check page 12 or something..maybe 11. But they got in last week. So they're lying to you to keep you from calling.

yeah... i got a call on may 10th from linda de vaughn for my acceptance after sitting on the waitlist for a couple of weeks? sorry hook. i was surprised cause i wasn't expecting anything until after the 15th. i think eggy got accepted a few days after the 15th or something.

but i heard the most movement is late may to june. no reason to give up hope yet.

:luck: :luck: :luck:

thats pretty weird that they would say that. Maybe they meant it hasnt moved since May 15.

I actually got called on the 12th. I was really surprised, because I didn't expect to hear from them until after the 15th. I thought Linda was calling to discuss a telephone call I had made the previous day concerning my transcripts. I flipped out when she told me I was accepted. My wife and I headed down two days later to get familiar with the area (you'd be acting like a gunner too, if this were YOUR third year applying). I'm sure they will have a lot of movement in the next couple weeks. Waiting sucks. Hang in there.

hey eggy did u find a place? r u both moving down there?
i'm driving down to augusta tomorrow to look at some apartments. it's hard to narrow down a lis of spots from the internet though, because they are labeled as "west augusta" "south augusta" and i am clueless of the area. also, the apartment listings online don't seem as cheap as i expected augusta to be.

Look for listings lableled West Augusta and Augusta. The school is pretty much in the center of town. South Augusta is probably more like the Fort Gordon area which is a pretty good drive from mcg. Places listed as Martinez can also be pretty close in. There are a few places in North Augusta that are close but thats actually a separate city in South Carolina so if its your official residence (ie your parents don't live in GA) then you might have to worry about in-state issues. I'm not sure about that. If you have any specific places that you would like me to give you an idea of proximity to school feel free to PM me. I'm studying for my boards right now and would take any distraction I can get.

Just got the call. See yall in August. Third time is definately a charm.

You can live in North Augusta without worrying about residency issues. I even know someone who lives in Aiken (quite a bit farther than N. Augusta) and maintains in-state residency. To answer your question, bubbleyum, yes. Both my wife and I are gonna head down there, but we are probably gonna buy a house. The housing market seems to be really cheap (at least compared to Atlanta) and there are a lot of new neighborhoods going up. We didn't find anything, but we bought a map of the area and are mapping out potential neighborhoods we find online. Oh, and I think areas referred to as S. Augusta may be referring to hepzibah? There seem to be a lot of new, more reasonably priced houses down that way.

oh, and congrats to wiwaxy. see you in August.

Congrats wiwaxy on your acceptance!

For those that are looking for houses in Augusta, as someone from here I would have to agree with erin682 to avoid South Augusta. It's not exactly known as the best side of town. West Augusta, Augusta, and most of Columbia County are nice areas. Columbia county is going to be a minimum 15 minute commute though.

congrats wiwaxy!!

to you and all others here who have gone through this app process more than once, i have the most tremendous respect for you...

as far as augusta housing goes. i played hooky from work today to drive up to augusta and find an apt. GEEEEZ i thought it would be a lot cheaper compared to atlanta, was i wrong or what. looks like i'm gonna have to pay more than what i pay now for my atlanta apt...

I got the call today as well. I'm still in disbelief....

Congrats to those that got off the list! :luck:

:luck: :luck: :luck: to everybody here! i wanna see all of us become classmates.

Well fellow MCG waitlisters, here we go on another anxiety filled week of 'waiting by the phone' so to speak. Good luck everyone :luck:

Just remember that we have until beginning of August so don't give up hope. I know it's hard not to though.

I met an MS3 at MCG last week who got in off the waitlist in June and he also told me someone in his class got the call the day class started! As much as that would suck, it would rock too! :horns:

:luck: :luck:

Yeah, I keep hearing conflicting reports that the MOST movement is in June. In fact, come to think of it, the only ones who are ready to throw in the towel are students. I know the admissions office over at Mercer personally told me that the MOST movement for them was May AND June. I guarentee MCG will be the same. Think about it...its only been 2 weeks since May 15. I know it feels like a lot longer, but don't give up hope! Keep this thread alive so we will know when others get the call!

Hey can someone answer this for me please......how does a white female get in off the waitlist at MCG when she has no research experience, no volunteering or shadowing experience, a 3.7 GPA, and about a 28 MCAT score?

Beg...no try telling them you want to work in an underserved area. It might work. But the no volunteering and shadowing hurts.

I'm not white or URM, but I have above average (for accepted students) stats, and I told both MCG and Mercer that I will be entering internal medicine and taking over my dad's practice (very likely), which is in an underserved rural population of GA, and both WL'd me....last year, I didn't even get an interview at MCG...oh, and my mom's an MCG residency alum...I think you gotta know Thompson personally or something....

no volunteering or shadowing experience? do you know what it's like to work with sick people for the rest of your career? if so, send a letter to the admin office and your committee rep (assuming you've interviewed) to prove it.

Well I was talking about a person I know, not me. I've had plenty of shadowing and volunteer experience. What blows me away is how this person I know got in without any clinical experience.

It appears as though nobody has been taken off of the waitlist in almost two weeks. Does anyone know anyone who has?

I was wondering the same thing

I got an email from the admissions office about two weeks ago and they told me that they had had the anticipated waitlist movement in May and that things would be moving slowly between now and August 2.

Wow. Did you e-mail them asking them about the waitlist first, or did they just send you the e-mail?

I emailed them because I had an acceptance form USUHS that was time sensitive, then while waiting for some indication from them I got off a waitlist at another institution that relieved the deadline. So I emailed them an update to let them know the situation and express continued interest in MCG.
