Uh, I hope this wasn't some random flame, because I found nothing rude or pretentious in her post.

I think it's more the fact that there seems to be some confusion as to whether or not MCG has actually evaulated all the people they interviewed in the period in question. I've recieved PM's from a number of different posters somewhat familar with MCG's policies that indicate southbelle may not be totally credible.

I see you go to UAB. Great school. I've got an interview there on 1/15. I know out of staters such as myself have our odds stacked against us, but is there anything unusual/specific UAB looks for(or for them to say) during the interview day from out of state candidates? thanks, Michael

meanderson what reason would I have to lie? I'm only reporting what I asked one of the admissions representatives a few weeks before I recieved my acceptance letter. She said all the students interviewing in October and November will have been evaluated before they head out for christmas. I'm not a psychic so maybe they changed their minds and didn't get to everyone. It's best to stay optimistic. I will say that MCG really looks at the whole picture a lot more than most schools, especially as far as good clinical experience goes. Just because you are a georgia resident and have a really good gpa and mcat score and interview well doesn't mean you will get accepted.

Yo,

Congratulations for receiving an interview out-of-state at UAB. Just be yourself and make as intelligent conversation as possible; read interview feedback if you haven't already. Interviews can be very hit or miss - FYI out of my 3 interviews, only 1 asked me any substantive thinking questions, another appeared to be interested in talking about one of my extracurriculars, and the last one talked more than I did about his wife (he looked like he was on call the previous night).

I can only emphasize again that I think all of my out-of-state colleagues are smart cookies.

Oh yeah, try to brush up on Alabama and Auburn sports, especially football 😀.

Yours,

Any action from anyone who cruises these forums in the last three weeks with MCG(or anyone who even knows someone...)?

I've heard nothing yet 🙁

I am an on-hold applicant from EDP - I am praying for a regular admissions interview offer.

Southbelle wasn't at all rude - it didn't seem to me. I hope she's right, though, about the stats thing - I get the same impression from them.

mom of 2,

I'm not sure what MCG stresses most when evaluating applicants, but if you are an applicant with less than great numbers but a lot of other positive things going on in your application, Mercer is a great school to apply to EDP. Their admissions committee really look past the numbers, and I even met a few people on my interview there who got in EDP at mercer without even recieving an interview from MCG. This year, for example, I think they accepted 13 people EDP, and a very small number applied(maybe 20?)

fyi -
I have a friend who interviewed mid-December - he got his acceptance yesterday.

Wow, meanderson. Thanks, I'll remember that if I have to reapply next year.

what kind of numbers/EC's did your friend have?

Not sure of gpa but mcat was 31. Accounting degree from Valdosta.

Congratulations on your acceptance to your first choice school!!!

I intereviewed in October and haven't yet heard. Interestingly enough, I already got into Emory which is normally harder to get into. I hope I hear from MCG soon. I really liked the school and am not sure if I'd rather attend Emory or MCG.
Congrats to those of you accepted.

I go to Emory in the undergrad! It is a great school. I would take Emory over MCG, but I might be biased. I also have been working at Grady for the last year or so, and it is awesome! The staff is so wonderful there. I would go just for the clinical years, if I had not been there for four years now! You should go to Emory. You would love it. The facilities are great and the hospitals they use are even better. Good luck deciding! And congrats for getting into a good school!

Hey guys. Got the mcg letter today, so they are still accepting candidates who interviewed early in the cycle. postmarked on the 10th 🙂

for people considering going to MCG next year, what are you doing for housing? Do you think the student housing is a good option...there are like 4-5 different student housing options for medical students but I'm not sure which ones are the nicest/best value.

I actually just got in today! So for those of you who interviewed early on, don't worry. I interviewed in October and got in in February. 🙂 I'll look through the housing stuff and get back to you on that.

I'm going to have a tough time choosing between Emory and MCG. Anyone else in this predicament? What do you think would be better. Emory's just way to $$$, that's my only worry. It's definitely a good predicament to be in!

I might be in the same predicament...haven't gotten in at emory yet though so maybe it's one I won't get to make. did emory give you any $$, or have they not sent you their aid package yet? When I was at emory they gave us a sheet that listed the average debt and how many students fall in what categories(0-50k, 50-75k, 75k-100k, etc) and there was virtually nobody above 150k. The average debt was around 100k. That doesn't make any sense unless emory is giving out major $$ to many students, because the financial aid budget was pretty tight(low figure for transportation, nothing for entertainment, etc) and it still came to a little over 200k.

MCG's total budget is listed at 113k, which seems kinda high to me considering the COL in augusta. The average debt for graduating students this year was 74k, which seems about right. I'm sure it will go up a little with the continuing tuition increases and state budget crunch.

Looking at the numbers of accepting and matriculating students at both MCG and Emory(for ga residents), it looks like it's a tough decision for a lot of people. I know lots of people are unimpressed with augusta and *have* to be in atlanta, but augusta looked like a perfectly fine place to study medicine to me.

Emory starts sending fin. aid packets in April. So, I'll definitely have to wait until then to make my final choice. I think Emory's supposed to have pretty good financial aid in general. I personally liked Emory more when I interviewed there, and Atlanta is better than Augusta. But like you said, it's really not that big of a deal... I can get to Atlanta if I need to. The drive isn't that far.

One thing that I might take into consideration is that the MCG is starting their new curriculum this coming fall. I'm not sure if I'd like to be a guinea pig. Who knows...

Anyways, keep me posted on the Emory situation for you. Good luck!

Can you describe MCG's new curriculum........

mom of 2, did you manage to get off the hold list for an mcg interview?

Meanderson -

I sure didn't. Admittedly, I am not as competitve an applicant numbers wise as probably 90% of the applicants. I haven't lost hope and will resign to reapplication next year if time runs out for me. Thanks for asking.

mom of 2,

I'd make an appointment with Dean Thompson at MCG. I know someone who did so last year. They told him what he needed to do and he got in this year. It might be something as simple as improving on the mcat or taking a few post-bacc courses to show you can make A's in upper level science classes.

Based on the experiences of others, MCG is pretty receptive to reapplicants as long as you improve your application's weak points.

Also, PM me for info on mercer if you are interested in going there. I live 15 minutes from mercer and have a pretty good idea what their adcom looks for. If you are looking for schools that look past numbers, Mercer is a much better option than MCG imo. good luck.

I PM'd you meanderson.

I think I'm going to live on campus the first year. I figured that it would be easiest to walk about a block back to my room after an all-nighter at the library or in the anatomy lab.

A friend of mine said that Residence IV is the nicest, but you have to move out during the summer since they use it for camps or something.

Hope this helps!

chuwoods,

If I end up going there, I think I'm just going to rent a decent apartment. To me, residence IV looked sort of like a dorm room with a small private bath. No real living area or kitchen. Part of the money saved I would probably lose by always eatign out with no stove/microwave in the room.

I guess it will cost a bit more than living on campus, but I figure I'll have saved so much money as opposed to going to a private or out of state school that I can afford it. And MCG budgets $500 for food and $315 for rent or something. The $315 rent is not nearly enough to get a decent place, but who spends $500 on food?

If I was going to stay on campus though, I'd look at the alumni center. They used to be hotel rooms...I don't know how nice they are on the inside though.

Just so that yall know -

I live here on campus, and I can try to help you out with everything. Res IV is a dorm room, although larger than most dorm rooms, you have a hall kitchen, and dorm laundry. Res V is an apartment building with full kitchen and 1 or 2 BR options. Both Res IV and Res V offer utilities and cable included in the rent. As for Alumni Center, they have the smallest dorm rooms on campus, but I don't think you have to move out over the summer - which is important once rotations start June of 3rd year. Res VI are also apartments, but utilities are not included in the rent. PM me if there are any questions.

is MCG's deposit refundable? i just got a letter from MCG saying that they've received my deposit and that they're happy i'll be there at MCG. it sounded almost as if it was set in stone. if i hold on to this now, and withdraw later, will i get my money back?
thanks.

Yea, according to one of the letters they mailed out with our acceptance, "this deposit will be applied toward your first semester's fees and is refundable by written request, postmarked by May 15, 2004, if you decide not to register at the Medical College of Georgia."

Congrats

I didn't get this but I did send off my check and the form saying I wanted to reserve a spot. I did get a little postcard saying that my MCG scholarship app had been recieved. How long did it take them to send you this letter?

I've thought more about the housing scene and apartments are so cheap. $400-480 seems to get a decent one bedroom apartment, either in downtown augusta or west augusta. With housing so cheap I don't think it will be that hard to get by without student housing or a roommate.

i got the letter like 2wks after i sent in the deposit. did anyone else get the letter?

i'd make sure they've received the deposit, just in case.

interestingly enough, i never received the postcard saying they'd received my scholarship app!

As a followup from earlier in this thread....I got my rejection Monday - there's always next year.

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat I'm in...

I interviewed at MCG in January and I still haven't heard ANYTHING. No acceptance, no rejection, no waitlist.... 😕

I thought some decision was going to be made by March 15, but apparently not. Is anyone else in this situtation?? Incidentally, I have the exact same situation at Mercer - maybe it's just me!

Thanks for your help!

I'm in the same boat too, so it's not just you. I interviewed in October and haven't heard anything from MCG. Hopefully we'll hear back soon.

It should be any day now that you hear something. MCG usually sends out rejection/waitlist letters in early april. I'm not sure if they also send out some final acceptances with that bunch also. Also, I think they send out more waitlist letters than rejection letters(but that's just based on individual samplings). About 30% I think who are waitlisted get in.

Thanks for the replies! I'll keep running to the mailbox everyday and hopefully there will eventually be good news... Good luck to you Nooges, keep us posted!

If anyone else is waiting around for a financial aid award letter...

I emailed the office last week and they replied that they will process the applications starting in mid-May.

So don't wait around by the mailbox.

😴

Received my alternate list letter in the mail today. Just thought I'd let you know in case you are also waiting. It was postmarked April 21st. When should I expect to hear anything? I guess I should go ahead and get a job and plan for a year off?

I got one too. They'll take people off of the waitlist up to the start of school (August 5), but I would think the most movement will be in late May/early June once people have committed to schools. I've heard that there is good movement on the MCG waitlist, but I also think they waitlist a lot of people...which makes it difficult to plan anything. 🙁 Hang in there and good luck!! :luck:

The waitlist movement isn't reallly large considering the # of people in the class and the # of people on the waiting list. Most people who are interviewed and not accepted are waitlisted. Most people who are waitlisted won't end up matriculating at MCG.

southbelle said:
Over 40 people got in last year on the alternative list so don't give up hope.

I thought this sounded like good movement.

kristabel said:

It is for a class that has a total class size of 100 or so and has a waitlist of maybe 80(that would be half). But MCG's waitlist has, by most estimates, between 130 and 175 people, so that's less than 25%. I think most waitlists move more than 25%. But still, that means you have a chance.

It's also pretty easy to predict who is coming off the waitlist. What is your gpa and mcat?

How can you tell who is getting off the waitlist? So if I had a 3.6 GPA, 3.25 science, and 30 MCAT, what does that tell you?

You can usually tell because the people accepted off the waitlist in past years have generally been people who didn't make much of an impression either way during the interview(at least not enough of one to put them over the top in the minds of your adcom rep), but had stats that were in the top 1/3 of the people waitlisted. One adcom member told me exactly this during our interview, and from observations it seems to pretty true.

The 3.6/30 combination in years past gets in off the waitlist at MCG. 90% of the time. The 3.25 is a little concerning however. if you had a 3.5-3.6 science gpa as well, you would be automatic to get in off the waitlist. It may come down to whether there was an upward trend or downward trend in that science gpa. Also, what school did you go to?

I'm guessing that you will get in, but the 3.25 puts more doubt in my mind than most 3.6/30's. I'd say 70% chance of getting in.

Frankly, I don't think very accurate predictions about who is coming off of the waitlist can be made at this point by anyone but the adcom. The waitlist has been made and the people on it have been ranked. This ranking was done after the interviews, so it's not solely a numbers game anymore. Sadly, Suncouch, I think we just have to wait it out...
