i have heard mercer has higher board score averages - so that might be something to seriously think about.

i have heard the same....i think its because of the PBL and p/f grading that allows you to focus on the boards and not trivial details

Has anyone started thinking about housing? I'll be abroad all summer and need to figure it out pretty soon. Is anyone going to try to live in the dorm apts? Off-campus? Any suggestions for neighborhoods to look in? I don't know Augusta at all - and I am not getting much help from the housing website or City of Augusta websites. I've been looking at apt search sites, but where do students generally live?

I have a friend who lives near the wheeler road exit off 20 and likes the area

my wife and i have spent a couple days around augusta lately, mostly looking at houses. it sounds like a lot of people are moving north of i-20. there is a fair amount of new construction around there.

you can check out augustarealestate.com or realtor.com to look for houses and apartments off campus.

if anybody has some good experiences to share, please pm me... or if you want some feedback from where we've looked (what areas, how far from campus, $$/sqft examples, etc) feel free to pm me as well.

thanks

Alright guys, I am now planning for the next application cycle and I am in a bit of dilema. I can't decide if I should apply EDP this time around. According to my pre-med advisor I should because it increases my chances of acceptance. I am not sure though. If I do apply EDP (again) and get defered (again) I will not be able to apply to out-of-state schools that I might have a chance at until October. mcg is my first choice. Do you think it is better to apply to many schools early, or one school (mcg) EDP to turn up an acceptance SOMEWHERE. According to my advisor, being on the waitlist and applying edp is a "good thing". 😕

The housing office couldn't give me concrete info, but he did say they did a survey recently and most students live in the 30907 zip code which is in the Martinez-Evans area. I looked at a number of apt complexes around there and found some nice options, but they're 7-10 miles away and I'm hoping to bike. There were a fair number of commercial apt complexes around the 30909 zip code. I have no concept about avg rent b/c I'm coming from Boston and everything is incredibly cheap compared to what I'm used to. I'm visiting this Friday and will stop by the housing office to check out all the private listings they have posted.

Does anyone know what on-campus housing is like?

Applying EDP depends on how competitive you are and what you have changed in the last year. If you have not taken classes or retaken the mcat, you may not want to apply edp. I have been accepted out of state at mcw will prob be accepted at vcu (email from dean) and still waitlisted at mcg. You may also have better luck out of state.

You may want to think about applying to mercer EDP...i really like the school and maybe a little easier to get in

One thing to consider, if you have been waitlisted, then according to the adcom you are a good applicant, just not the best. Traditionally, MCG admits a large number of students via EDP, and is less stringent with MCAT scores. This year, I believe the number was ~80. I did have a friend who was waitlisted last year and applied and accepted EDP this year, with a 27 MCAT, but good GPA. Even if it is October when you enter the regular admission pool, it is not too late to receive acceptance somewhere else. From what I understand, Mercer did not even start interviewing regular decision applicants until January.

I also think that applying EDP is a good idea. I know of 2 people from my undergrad who got in this past year with a 27 and a 26 and mid 3 GPAs.

However, if Mercer is a possibility I might try them. They are a much easier school to get into even though the class size is smaller.

This is my second year applying and I was finally accepted to Mercer, which I am really looking forward to. My first year, I applied to MCG and Mercer but got waitlisted at both. This cycle, I applied EDP to MCG in hopes that I would get in because I was told that I was good to be waitlisted the prior year. I got deferred and then applied to Mercer and was accepted. I took more classes that fall while applying but couldn't bear to retake the MCAT. From my experience, I probably should have taken classes before applying to be more competitive EDP at MCG. I'm very happy with the outcome though. I wish you all the best when making your decision.

Well I've only taken 2 classes since the last Amcas (A's in both), but I have increased my medical experience tremendously this past year. I have not retaken the mcat. My #'s are...29p (11v, 10bio, 8phys)-3.3-3.4science. I applied to Mercer this year, I had a strong interview, and didn't even get waitlisted. My interview at mcg didn't go quite as well as I would have liked so I hope that I can improve my chances with a stronger interview this time around. pratik7, when did you submit your application for vcu and mcw?

*thanks to everyone who replied. I hope I make the right decision!

When you say it didnt go as well as you would have liked, what do you mean?

I am applying to MCG this summer and any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

Does anybody know when MCG starts sending out their secondaries?

I had all my application out by around aug 15th. It is really important to get your stuff in early at mcw bc of the true rolling admissions (ie most people that interview after dec are waitlisted).

I think you are pretty competitive at mcg and many other schools so you may want to apply regular decsion and hope the interview goes better.

Mercer is jacked up cause they are interview people with really low stats and do not interview more competitive applicants. The only explaination i can think of is the increase of rural applicants

They sent mine last year shortly after my AMCAS was verified, but not before that for me at least. Be aware, there is a 1 week filling out time period for EDP and a 2 week period for Regular Decision once they mail it to you, so its really not something you want to put off. But its free, so the price is right.

Good luck with the app process

Has anyone else on the waitlist received a letter from financial aid, stating their financial aid information is incomplete.

no, when did you recieve this? Did you call MCG and ask them? Maybee it is a good sign for you.

yeah, i got it too. I called MCG and asked Linda about it. She said my status has not changed, but who knows?

Goofing around....I didn't call the school, because one of the items listed as not received, is "admission." Then in parentheses it says to call if I am accepted. It appears to be sent to most waitlisted candidates missing one or two items for financial aid. Also, I will be pulling my file in the next couple of weeks, so I'm not too worried about it. Good luck everyone.

What do you mean pulling your file? Are you withdrawing from the waitlist? What are you going to do?

Yes, I'm withdrawing from the waitlist. I have decided to attend West Virginia University. I was accepted off of the out-of-state waitlist this week. I'm originally from WV, and my family is spread between there and DC, so it is taking precedence over MCG. Good luck.

fyi, i also heard mcg had about 70 students accepted edp, out of a class of 180. i also heard that last year they only had 2 out of state students, and both were md/phd. i know a girl who applied to mcg last year and was rejected, then reapplied this year edp and got in.

about mercer.... who knows? i heard it was a pretty good school and i was looking forward to an interview. i got interviews at mcg, duke and emory and was rejected post secondary from mercer. was it something i said?

good luck all.

My daughter just finished her first year at MCG. We went to family day and the dean of students explained that the next year's applications were up 30% and that both GPA's and MCAT scores had increased.

Some people who are being asked for more details for their financial packages may have problems with claiming residence rather than any other problem. This claim of residence in the State of Georgia is a real serious consideration for attending MCG.

Some may have stretched the truth about residence.

Anyone who is going to school at MCG gotten anything back from the financial aid office after filling out the paperwork?
I'm still waiting for my loan info and all that.
Just wondered

has anyone heard of waitlist activity recently?
