Hey fellow future doctors,

I had the unbelievable blessing to be accepted to a few different DO schools. I know I have time to decide (as the first deposits aren't due until Dec 15), but it's a decision that has to be made here.

MCOM

Pros:
- In Billings (i live here and i don't have to move)
- In Montana (i love Montana, all my family is in Montana, and I'd like to end up in Montana)
- Associated with RVU -- pretty good track record
- Cheapest of my DO options
- Honestly, being part of the inaugural class sounds really cool
- Faculty seems very excited to make this school work

Cons:
- Brand New school, with all the potential risks and downsides that come with that
- Private loans for the first two years
- For profit and associated with Caribbean schools (though, I'm not convinced this actually affects anything)

COMP-NW

Pros:
- Oregon! I grew up on the Oregon coast and love it there. I really miss the ocean, so this would put me way closer
- Very established school with a very good track record of competitive matches
- Proximity to Portland means that i can fly almost anywhere fairly cheaply
- students i spoke with seem extremely happy, chill, and collaborative
- price almost identical to MCOM

Cons:
- I have to move to Oregon, meaning I'm quite far from family
- wife has to find a new job (she's a nurse, so this isn't exactly difficult)

I was also accepted to AZCOM, but I'm not really considering it due to the high tuition (+$16k/yr).

My gut says that the smart thing is to go to COMP-NW. They're established, know what they're doing. I miss the Oregon coast and would love to spend some time back there. It's not smart to gamble $60k a year on a school that might not pan out, with all the potential bumps that come with it.

But, another part of me really wants to be in the inagural class. How cool would that be? The first group do physicians trained 100% in Montana (i know wwami is a thing)! RVU has also done this before, so i imagine they won't fumble it. Like i said too, my wife has a solid job here and I'm having a baby in December (and cost of living here is pretty low), so not moving is very attractive.

Go to COMP-NW. It can not be emphasized enough how much of a difference there is going to an established school vs a new one. Being part of an inaugural class is even harder since you don't have students in the classes ahead of you to talk to about their experiences going through the curriculum or rotations.

Private loans are also something you don't want to deal with if you can avoid it.
