I was recently accepted to MCPHS-Worcester but I'm holding back because I'm not so stoked on the city. I thought knowing a little more about housing options would help with the decision.

Are a lot of people planning living on campus or off? What's the logic behind the decision?

The dorms are nice enough but I did that in undergrad and I think I'm too used having a real apartment to go back to dorm living, even if its apartment style. I would prefer to live off campus, as close to the school as possible. I don't know anything about Worcester so if anyone has suggestions about non-sketchy apartments/areas, preferrably where there are other students/young people (I'm 23), that would be great!

Hey there. You opened a duplicate thread but I'll respond to this one since this thread title is the most detailed 🙂.

So, I'll probably be going to MCPHS-Worcester too but I will live on campus because I think it would make it easier for me to meet people. (I am 21... and recall that the average age at MCPHS-W is 28, and many of the students already have families and kids to take care of so you won't be seeing them on campus much). Also, Massachusetts is a brand new adventure for me, meaning that I don't know a single soul there lol .

I am a 4th year in college now and haven't lived in the dorms since frosh year. I really liked the on-campus housing when I interviewed at MCPHS though! It'd be a huge advantage not having to commute in the cold weather when winter hits. That said, I heard a lot of the students who live off campus live at the 600 Main Street apartments. I think people have said it's very close to campus and also very affordable. Anyways, that's about all I know. Maybe greatdeals, pmp, nightcrawler, DrugRX, DrugDealer, or any of the other current students can write a better reply.

Yeah I sorry about the duplicate threads, I suck at these things.

I don't know if I saw different dorms than everyone else, but I just had no desire to live in them. They were just too institutional and small and I hate that you can't use your own furniture. I dont know, maybe I'm just being a brat, I'll have to look into it some more. I guess everyone else just thinks the benefits are worth it.

Thanks for your help. I'll have to keep looking into it some more. In the meantime, if anyone else wants to share some more thoughts/advice I'd appreciate it.

I'm just wrapping up my final year in Worcester. You're right, it is kinda dumpy...but with nothin' to do, you have plenty of time to study!

Anyway...I lived off campus all 3 years in the next town south, Millbury. I chose to live off campus because I am older (I will be two months short of 30 when I graduate in May), my boyfriend was moving with me, I was not trying to save money/find a cheap place to live, and I have a car, so driving wasn't an issue. I'm just a short drive away (10-15 minutes, depending on traffic), but definitely not walkable, which it sounds like you are interested in.

Check out 600 Main Street (yes, that is the address AND the name of the building: http://www.forrent.com/apartment-community-profile/1000007613.php )--a lot of my classmates live there. It is clean, but very generic, without much personality. I also know some students who live at 53 Elm St (http://www.micozzimanagement.com/). It is a very cute older building that is beautifully maintained. It is spacious and while it is historic, it is in no way dilapidated, like so many buildings in Worcester are.

At least for the first year, I do want to live right downtown. I have a car and all that, so I figure if I really hate it I can move outside the city after the first year. 600 main was actually one I was looking at, along with 53 and 46 Elm and there is one on Cedar street also. I'm relieved to hear Microzzi seems like a pretty decent company because I like the look of their properties. I'll have to drag my butt back there in a few weeks to check them out first hand.

thanks for your help, good luck with your last few months and congrats on making it through!

hey i just got accepted and i have same concerns about living in worcester
i am 22 and would prefer to live with young ppl..i love partying so i dont think living on campus is worth

i liked to 600 Main street appt. but i havent visited anywhere
did you found anything good that you actually visited ???

I'm planning on going out there in a few weeks to look at some places...

Hi,

I'm going to MCP in the fall and I plan on moving to 600 Main St. mid-June because of work. I went to visit the complex and it is very clean and well-maintained, they are renovating every room and the rent is very reasonable...definitely something to consider!

Hi everyone! I heard a rumor on facebook that on campus housing is full for this year. Does anyone know if this is true? I sent my forms wihtin 2-3 days of receiving them but have not heard anything back. Has anyone heard back? Please let me know. Thanks!

Hi guys,

I'm a current P1 student who lives on campus. I thought that I would share my experience. I would have to say my overall experience of living on campus was worth it. If you live on campus you will see how beneficial it is to live on campus especially when you are studying for finals and do not want to waste time. I had lab last semester at 8am and it was nice to roll out of bed and go to lab, which is a 5 minute walk. As always there are negatives to speak about. I lived with 5 other P1s and we were always on different schedules, one of them would always stay up late around 2-3am to study while others went to bed around 12-1am. Some are loud and others are not. I' am moving off campus for my P2 year with another P2 who is much like I'am and so I do not have to deal with those that are noisy. Also, there were some parties at our place, but it did not bother me because there was not many especially after the first semester. I will be moving about 8 minutes away, not 600 main. Try to live as close as possible, it will make your life much easier, especially when it snows.

do you have to apply for on-campus housing every year?

can anyone tell me how much the monthly rent for studios in 600 main is? i can't find a phone number of the management office anywhere,,,

i procrostinated finding housing until this week and now i am starting to worry that i might end up on the street when i move to worcester in august..

i am searching the apartments on the internet here and there, and three apartments that i am considering are 600 main, 77 elm, 46 elm..

any input on those three?

i feel very worried to sign on the contract even without looking at the place especially when they are saying that it has to be a year round contract...

I am currently a P1 that is living on campus and I will admit that the convenience is certainly a huge advantage. I do not regret a single day of not having to trudge out in the single-digit temperatures or ice/snow to get to class--so much so that I will be living on campus for my P2 year. I can't complain too much about the apartments, the rooms are new and the rent isn't excessive.

I personally do not know much about 600 Main. What I do know is that Main South isn't the best of neighborhoods. I regretted having to drive down that way for my first semester's service learning (community service site). 👎

I live at 600 main. I have talked about the apartment in the "Worcester class if 2011" post. If you still have questions send me a private message. The rents are going up all over the worcester area thanks to gas prices etc. However the rent range is probably around 900 - 1100 (heat hotwater AC included) per month for a 2 bedroom apartment. Other places outside of worcester are probably cheaper. Depends on if you want to drive to school every day.

The area isnt really that bad. You see crazies all over main street thanks to the courthouse, salvation army, and abundance of liqour stores. Ive been at 600 main street (now known as the Sky Mark Tower) for a year and have not run into any issue of any sort (thank god)
Again, I know its awesome to live on campus since its convenient but when you have no other choice and you want to save some money off campus housing is the best way to go.

Elm street is a nicer area and the apartments are nicer compared to 600 main but the price tag goes up to around 1200 - 1300 (heat hotwater AC not included) . (I looked there a year ago when I was looking for apartments, so the price might have gone up or down)
Im sure you can find cheaper deals but you just have to look. Elm is also closer to the school but for me the choice was walking another block vs. 300-400 bucks extra a month. I picked walking. The winter was NOT that bad. The snow is not that big of an issue, I mean its the northern hemisphere you cant live somewhere where you dont get any snow. It was only bad on one day (there was ice on the sidewalks) but the school had a delay so it was all good. Most of the times when snow is really bad we have delays or closings.

I'm actually planning on living at 77 Elm as a p1 this fall. I've seen the apartments and they are small but in good shape. The building is a pretty typical icky apartment building, but like I said the apartments themselves are in good shape. The apartments at 46 elm are really nice, and really big and start at like 950. I considered it but it really too much apartment for just one person, at least in my opinion. I've done extensive research and communication with Micozzi Mngmt if you have any questions send me a PM.
