MCPHS Worcester Class 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is anybody else interested in off campus housing? Or did anybody already start looking around and can share info?

I think the one on 600 Main is really popular among students. If any of you are looking for a male roommate, I think we should get in touch.
how much is the rent for 600 main street? Is there any web page for it?

from what i saw, it's about 1200 for 2 bedroom, 2 baths. their place seems to look the nicest though. but did you already get your housing package? there's a lot other places. the one by micozzi management offers a 2 bedroom place for about 900.

the list in the package has all the contact info and the websites that you can check out.

Has anyone here did high school diploma evaluation ? it is required if u dont have a degree.
through what evaluation agency did u do it? how much time it took?

Thanks.

are you interested in getting an off campus housing as well? if you are, we should get in touch.

600 Main seemed to be a nice place and the best among all in the 1 mile radius from school. I am not sure if they have 2 baths in their 2 bedrooms though. You should be careful about the heat and hot water to make sure they are included in the rent.

Hi, I am selling some books for the P1 year:

1. Principles of Biochemistry, 4th ed, Lehninger (for biochem I & II - the course called for the 5th edition, but he gives you 4th edition question references along with 5th edition references)
2. Lehninger Biochem Study Guide, 4th ed. (for biochem I & II-both of these books you will need to do questions prior to exams. I used the study guide alot.)
3. Ansel's Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms and Drug Delivery Systems, 8th ed, Allen, Popovich, Ansel. (This is for Pharmaceutics I and II)
4. Intro to Public Health, 2nd ed, Schneider (For US Health - you will read most of this book)
5. Understanding Health Policy, 4th ed, Bodenheimer, Grumbach (US Health - Everyone will read this book from cover to cover to do well in this class)
6. Immunobiology, 6th ed, Janeway, Travers, Walport, Shlomichik (a recommended book for immunology)
7. Understanding Normal and Clinical Nurtrition, 7th ed, Rolfes, Pinna, Whitney (for biochem II)
8. Principles of Pharmacoeconomic, 3rd ed, Bootman, Townsend, McGhan (for pharm management)
9. Applied Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics, 5th, Shargel, Wu-Pong, Yu

I would prefer to sell these as a package deal. I'm not sure when you receive your book lists. PM me if you are interested.

I am also adding the required Physiology book (but I just need it through the summer) and the Pharmacy Management required CD for the same low package price 🙂

I was actually there a few weeks ago. For a 1 bed room, with parking and all utilities included, they told me it was 1025. (600 Main St)

Hey Guys - I just found this forum. I will be attending this fall as well. Has anyone received any detailed information yet? I feel kind of in the dark about everything and starting to get a little nervous.

If these are what we need, then I'm definately interested. I'll let you know when we find out.

Hi to all,

anyone has any idea about off-campus housing, which apartments are nice nearer to campus and away from campus. Is it safe to live in main street or bancroft commons which are nearer to campus.

I think the school will send u guys a link to a website with all the forms u guys need downloaded, such as a link for clickers, your fall book list, orientation information, etc...

i'm not too sure which is safer... but it seemed like the bancroft commons are closer to campus than 600 main street. i would suggest visiting the area to get a better feel for things in the neighborhood.

usually during the daytime, not much is happening around either complexes. There is a little park separating school and bancroft, so as long as you don't cross that park at night, you should be fine.

MCPHS is located downtown Worcester, so if you are walking to/from either bancroft or 600 main at night after work rush-hours, i'd suggest walking in groups anyway.

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a female roommate. please reply me if anyone interested to share an apartment.

Hey ! I'm looking for a female roomate as well, please pm me so we can talk!

Question for any current MCP pharmacy student: Do we have to memorize the top 200 brand/generics during the year. I know we will have to know them at some point; but is it advisable to memorize them before school starts? I ask this because some schools dont have their students memorize them, while others do. Im not sure if MCP does or does not.

PS. I do not have any pharmacy experience, so I do not know the names.

yes, u have to. The only thing is that I think you will use the 2009 list, which none of us have, so if you can find it, it's cool, if not, i'm sure it won't be too too far from 2008, coz the top 200 drugs would probably still be on the list, maybe in different ordres, but u don't have to remember them in order.

As for the Top 200 Drugs, what exactly do we need to remember? The Brand, Class, and the Drug itself?? Or is there more to it?

I don't know how they break will break it off for you guys, but by the end of your 1st year here, you'll be expected to know the brand, generic, available dosing, indications, might be more...

This year we are responsible for knowing brand, generic, available strengths, dosage forms available, primary indication, dosing frequency and drug class. Ex Lipitor= atorvastatin, available in tablets as 10, 20, 40, and 80mg, for hyperlipidemia, given once daily, and it is a statin. If you were going to learn the top 200 I would only do the brand/generic/primary indication for now as things may change between now and when you need to know everything else. They want you to learn them a specific way and there will be time to build up to all of this info. I spent time learning them the summer before I started. It was a waste of time. It didn't help much as I forgot most of them because I wasn't using them. If you work - that is prob the best preparation.

Hello everyone! I am accepted to Worcester too! I am looking to buy a condo out there that would be 1.85 miles from campus. We are working on finalizing it now... but if anyone is still looking for a place to live and may be interested please email me! [email protected]

I don't know if u guys already had the "list" of required things for the fall yet, but you do need Turning Point Clickers.

I believe they will be sold for $40 or something and they will be used for almost every class, at least P2 year, if not P1 year even. It is REQUIRED and professors do use it for attendance, quizzes, participation, polls, etc...

If anyone of you are interested about buying them 2nd hand (our class only used them for 1 year coz they weren't required for us when we first came in), so if u are interested in second-hand, PM me. I'm sure we will be willing to sell them for a really good bargain.

Just got a condo 1.85 miles from campus. It is a two bedroom two bathroom very nice with a wrap around porch. It is on a bus line or in biking distance over the interstate. Rent will be $500 per month plus utilities! Let me know if you are interested! Email me at [email protected]

Are they the same ones that are required this year do you know. I am very interested just email me at [email protected] or give me your email.

anyone interested in buying the Physiology book( Concepts in Medical Physiology,by Julian Seifter, Austin Ratner, David Sloane). You'll need it for the fall and the summer semester. I'll sell it for $45. PM me if your interested.

I have the following books for sale:

-Introduction to Public Health, Schneider, 2nd ed.
-Understanding Public Policy, Lange, 4th ed. (Both of these are required for U.S. Healthcare in the fall)

-Concepts in Medical Physiology (Required for Physiology I and II in fall and summer)

-Lehninger's Principles of Biochemistry 5th edition
-The Absolute, Ultimate Guide to Lehninger's Principles of Biochemistry (4th ed., but still helpful with the 5th, both used in Biochemistry I and II in fall and spring)

-Ansel's Pharmaceutical Dosage forms and Drug Delivery Systems 8th ed. (required for pharmaceutics, fall)
-Martin's Physical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, 5th ed.(recommended for pharmaceutics, fall)

I would like someone to take these 7 books off of my hands as a package deal... if you want them all I'll sell them for $225, which is a lot less than you could get them for through Amazon, Half.com, etc. They are all in very good condition. PM me if you're interested.

Just like GreatDeals, I am also looking to unload my clicker. Excellent condition-$30. Let me know!

Hey everyone, you should be getting order forms for your course packets soon. I just want to make sure you know that you must buy these. They contain the core material that you will need for each class.

Does anyone know if its too late to apply for the Grad PLUS Loan? Also, if I have already completed the fafsa, is the PLUS Loan Supplemental Application and Master Promissary Note the only paperwork that needs to be completed?

It is never too late to apply for a loan as long as you filled out your FAFSA on time. The other part of your question, double check with Lynn Berry.

I just graduated from mcp-worcester.

If you got accepted to another pharmacy, go to that school.

It is strange how people would disregard all the posts about this school on SDN and enroll. A lot of the discussions are true. A lot of people fail a class and have to wait a year. My class had lots of people who failed a class and were dropped back into my class. Theres even people who fail twice.

It is accelerated so you would think you would have to study a lot. But actually you will be studying a lot because the school won't teach you anything.

Hi Rivatnt,

I think it's great that you bring all of your positive energy to a thread of students who are only a month away from beginning their program. Sure you are one of the fortunate ones that was able to make it through the program on time, but even after making it through, did you really feel compelled to come and raise doubt in the minds of people who are going to be going through what you did. In any program there will be people who are unable to handle the coursework and be held back. I have yet to hear of a graduating class that has 100% of the members that it started with.

Also, for the failing a class and having to wait a year part, no matter what school you go to, there are always certain classes that are only available during a certain semester. If there is only one instructor for a course, there is no way that they would offer the same course year round so failing a class and having to wait until it is available just comes with the territory. No matter what school you go to, teachers are always a hit or a miss. There are people who have an innate ability to teach and there are those who can't teach to save their life, but wherever you go, this will ALWAYS be a factor.

Another thing, keep in mind that when you entered MCP Worcester three years ago, the economy was NOT in the ****hole that it is in right now and the admissions criteria was nowhere near as stringent as it is now. Try reading the news for one second and you will see that even getting into a professional program this year is a great accomplishment in itself. Sure many people may have had other options in terms of which school they had the opportunity to attend, but the past several months that people have been posting on this forum and reading the reviews of this school obviously impacted them to attend this school. Why should your opinion or any other student's negative opinion of the school overshadow a positive opinion that another student may have? Whether it was because of the quality of the teaching or the fact that you save a year of schooling by coming to this school, people made the decision to come here and it isn't your place to **** on their decision because you didn't feel that you got what you wanted from this school.

No matter what your reason is to study, whether it be the fact that it is an accelerated program or because "the school won't teach you anything", individuals that make it through the program do so because they have the motivation and discipline to strap themselves down and get what is needed done. Even if it means that you have to be assertive and take the initiative to learn on your own, how does that in any way hurt you at all? If anything, I believe that acquiring those skills can only help you in the long run.

I don't have any regrets choosing this school because in the bigger picture, I save a year of my life and achieve my goal either way in the process. Rather than bring down the mood of people about to get started, you should focus your energy towards passing your boards and be grateful that MCP even took an unappreciative individual such as yourself.

Ok, it is the best pharmacy school in the nation.

You just don't get it. What kind of response did you think you were going to get after posting something like that. Go and flip through the past 5 pages of this thread and see if you can get a sense of how anxious and excited people are about starting school next month. Who are you to ruin any of that even before they start? You can go and mouth away all you want about how crappy your experience was over the past three years, and trust me...I don't think anyone here is a stranger to your sarcasm...but what it ultimately boils down to is you graduated and you've got your degree, and that's all that anyone can really ask for.

Sure there are a lot higher ranked schools in the nation, and I don't think anyone expects to get a Harvard education from here. For the purpose of becoming a pharmacist and getting their PharmD degree, just like you when you decided to come to the school, there are hundreds of factors that could have influenced people in coming here, whether it's the location, the accelerated program, or even because there wasn't any other option available, it doesn't matter at this point because we're starting school next month and whether we like it or not, this is the school we're going to have to love or hate for the next three years.

Hi Greatdeals,

I am looking to buy clicker. If you still have it, please let me know as soon as possible.

Thank you

I'm a current P1 student at MCP. Yes, we have lost a few members of our class already, and yes we have had some people that have stayed back to join our class. However, most of the people who have left haven't actually failed out, but either weren't prepared for the program, couldn't keep up, or left for other personal reasons. Keep in mind that the average age of students in the accelerated program is a bit older, so people have families and possibly reasons other than academic for taking time off/leaving the program.

finally someone who talks some sense into those people 🙂

The school doesn't have that many rotation sites. You may even be driving to Rhode Island. A 50 mile radius is pretty long commute. They use a lottery system and "what you get is what you get". It doesn't matter if you wanted to do nuclear pharmacy, etc.

Hey everyone, I will be attending Worcester in the fall and I was just wondering if anyone knew how long the white coat ceremony was going to be on august 27th. It starts at 4:30pm. I am from NY and have a previous engagement that night at 8pm in manhattan and was just curious if i could make it there in time! Thanks

it is a definite no.

It is going to be at least 2 hours, if you can drive from worcester to manhattan in 1.5 hrs, then you can try, but good luck trying.

I drive 65 miles one way to school every day ;-)

Thanks for getting back to me. Ahhh 2hrs?? is that only the ceremony or including refreshments and reception afterwards

Since we got the textbook list, I started searching for books and noticed that the International Editions are significantly cheaper than the US Editions. They say its because of the paper quality (international editions use cheaper paper and US Editions have glossy paper). I also read that International editions might not have the CD roms or other supplemental material thats included with the US books. So, i was wondering if we will ever use the CDs or supplemental material in any of the classes, and if its OK to buy the International Editions to save some money? Do any of the current students use International books and if so, is there a difference?

If you are sure that is the only difference I don't see why not. I never used any of the supplemental stuff with my books, except the biochem study guide. That was my bible first semester ;-)

I think it's only the ceremony, because it's you guys + manchester, so that's a lot of students, and there's a speech, etc etc
