MCV acceptances

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You might want to check into the VCU shuttle system. I was an R.A. on the MCV campus during PT school but several of my classmates lived just east of the Fan area of Richmond and caught the shuttle to school every day. It's free for students.

Think we'll hear some news this week now that the dean is back? Let's try to keep one another posted...

Right. I believe the Dean will be back on Thursday, but I imagine nothing will happen until at least a couple days after that. Good luck to all! Hoepfully a few spots have opened up in the time she has been gone! 🙂

the receptionist said they would be sending out a set of offers this week, just didn't know when. good luck everyone.

Alright! Thanks for the news. At least that is progress. I don't think I can take more than another week of this

I just called and someone in the office told me that a set of offers was sent out yesterday. Anyone knows when is orientation? I hope the list will continue to move.

So does that mean that if we didn't receive an e-mail yesterday that we have to endure more waiting? This sucks the monkey butt...good luck y'all! 😎

So I guess no one on the Forum received one of those offers? I bet they were mostly for out-of-staters. I talked to admissions last week and they said to wait another 2.5-3 weeks. Joy...

It's incredible how little movement there has been this year at all of the schools. 👎

I wish that they would just tell us what are chances are. I decided back in May that I would just pretend as if I wasnt waitlist anywhere and prepare for next year, but I still cant get that feeling out of my head. Wondering where I am on that list!!!

Oh well. It is getting late in the cycle and I imagine most financial aid packages have gone out. I feel that movement after next week will be very small.

Best of luck in this last month of waiting!

I'm on the out of state waitlist and haven't heard anything as well. I'm with you on wanting to know where I am on the list. Good luck to everyone.

Sorry the last post flew out by mistake before I could write anything...

So I check my email this morning and voila! Good luck to the other instate applicants there is still hope!

Do you, Arusak, Amy or anyone know if a student can park in the MCV parking lot 24 hours a day for 7 days a week? Is it safe to do that? There is a difference in insurance premium to keep the car in 23298 and other zips from 23219. According to a quote from one company, it could be as high as $150 every six months.

Does anyone know a good apartment in the Fan? I am interested in a furnished one bedroom unit and so far, Trolley at 104 W. Franklin is the only one available. But I don't mind any unfurnished unit at all as long as it is clean and safe. Please help me sign up in advance of the move.

Congratulations everyone who has got in. Now let me pray for the rest.

I doubt if you can do that. You might be able to purchase a parking pass for the parking deck next to the MCV dormitories (around 9th and Leigh St.) - I lived in the dorms during P.T. school so obviously I kept my car there 24/7.

You think $150 every six months is high?!?!?!?!?!?!

Trolley's a pretty good place - most of my friends lived there and caught the shuttle to school. If you don't mind driving you can get a place anywhere in the city and there is a student parking lot at the bottom of a long hill - it was funny to watch all the students walking up the hill to school every day. I had a 5 minute walk from the dorms. 🙂

How long did you have to wait for the dorm to become available? I want to live on campus at MCV. But it appears impossible to make it off the waitlist in time. The closest apartment downtown charges $95 a month for parking. I don?t know yet if the garage is in or outside the building. It could be a nearby public parking facility. The expense to keep a car in 23219 does add up so much that I may have to live farther away. That is undesirable for someone who has been living within walking distance to schools all of his life. Do you happen to know the fee for student parking lot? In case of driving, I may have to pay for both parking lots at home and school. Believe it or not, I end up buying a car before I can find a place to live there.

The Berkshire at 300 West Franklin is closer to VCU undergrad campus. Bigg Building at 900 West Franklin is right next door. Any comment? It probably cost about $50 a months for a parking space on these complexes. Thanks.

I think I got in right away - you could also apply for an RA job - that's what I did and I got the room for free.

I wouldn't worry too much about living farther away from campus. Contact the school and find out the shuttle route. It might go farther away from MCV than you think and it's free. If you live outside the range of the shuttle, you can ride the GRTC (city bus) for $50 a semester (unlimited) as a VCU student. That would let you live in the West End if you want and you don't want to drive and park at school.

I don't think the student lot at the bottom of the hill was all that much if you end up driving to school. Maybe just over $30 a month. Also, if you live further away from downtown, in the Fan area, you can park on the street for free. Then you're just paying for the school parking in the student lot.

Honestly, I think you're looking too close to the school. I live on the 3300 block of West Grace Street and I could make it to MCV in 15 minutes through the city, faster on the highway. My rent is cheaper than you're going to get in the Berkshire, Trolley, etc and I park on the street for free.

An MS1 1/2 told me that there shouldn't be any problem getting in the oncampus housing. But here I am, stalled on the waitlist. But it may not be too bad though. Thanks to your info. Would you or anyone please name some clean, safe and more economic apartment? Here is the link to VCU parking and transportation. The multiple routes shuttle service is complimentary to VCU students. Looks like we have a good place to go to a medical school here.

Don't buy a parking spot in the lot at the bottom of the hill. People were having problems with crime down there.

If you need to buy a spot, buy in the MCV campus lot across I-95. The MCV campus bus shuttle can take you right to the front door of Sanger Hall. However the wait in the morning can be bad when everyone wants to go to class and the shuttles are full and you have to wait for the next shuttle. Lot I is the lot I am talking about. It is for the commuter students, because those on campus can buy a spot in a different lot. You have to buy a new permit every semester but it can all be done online, which is a far cry from having to go in person and line up in the dark at 5 am like it used to be. But you need to buy early. Permits for fall went on sale last spring so it may be hard to get one now.

My friend lived in the fan but drove her car and scrambled daily to find a spot at VCU. When I was doing my master's at MCV I bought a permit in the Main street parking deck and rode the bus. Another semester I bought a permit in the I lot.

Good luck.

Good advice. If I were going there, I would still live in the Fan and ride the Richmond City bus every day. Much less hassle.

Still Waiting here. Any news from anyone? I guess things will be particularly slow at this point. I'm hoping for at least one more rounds of acceptances. We'll see! 🙂

There aren't any "rounds" of acceptances at this point in time. Now you are waiting for people to give up their acceptances and have the waitlist move down to your spot on the list. It is a brutal time. I know, I 've been there.

If you don't clear the waitlist by August ~12, then you will get one last email telling you to check the status page. There you will see the horrible news in writing stating that time is up and you have now been rejected. At least that was how they did it a few years ago.

For those since waiting..... All my very best to you :luck: :luck: :luck:

I am on the out of state wait list. I am pretty much ready to except the fact that I probably won't get off the wait list.

I had some questions people might be able to answer?

Do you think their might be a few people who might withdraw thier acceptances this late, I think VCU start in two weeks?

I don't see how people can get off the list this late. I thought people are only aloud to hold onto one spot, so the only way someone would give their spot up is if they don't want to go to medical school, which I highly doubt anyone would give up this far into the process.

Does anyone know of VCU's history on extremely late movement off of the waitng list?

Thanks

Sorry, but historically there is almost no movement in the next two weeks. I was left on the waitlist a few years ago and got my official email August 12 which is a little over two weeks away from now.

I hope for your sake you can clear it, but it looks bad. Sorry. I hope you hav ebeen accepted elsewhere.

Bump . . . does anyone have any news? I realize it's not likely, but I thought I would give it a shot! 🙂

don't think it is happening at this point. only 2 weeks left until schools starts and the WL is moving really slow. 🙁

So how does it work now. I noticed they sent out some acceptances on July 13th, and if they give people two weeks to respond, that means another round would go out around the 27th. So now it seems like the only way to get a spot is if some of those that got in on the 27th decide to not take thier acceptance. How long would these people get to make that decision.

I don't know if this is how they run thier process but it makes a little sense to me. What do you guys think? I know there is nothing I can really do but wait, but its not easy waiting.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to let you know that I just received an offer out of state(7/31). Not sure if that means the list is moving or if I was the only one. Good luck everyone still on the list...keep the faith, I was interviewed over 10 months ago and I just got off the list (my first acceptance!!)

I've got 11 days to move my life from NH to Richmond. Yikes. Anyone have any suggestions for where to live? I got some info about Trolley Square, is that a nice place?

Congratualtions,

It must be an awesome feeling, good luck at VCU.

Hoping you could answer a few questions. Did you get a call or email in advance? How long did they give you to give them a response, I am wondering because I want to know if they offered any seats to anyone else and they denied their spot when they may send out another offer?

Does anyone know why the send out offers on Saturday, I have seen students getting in on Saturday on this thread.

The website says you have two weeks to respond to an offer, but of course, since orientation is only 11 days away, I am not sure if that really holds. Since it was my first acceptance, I immediately put down a deposit.

Good luck lookleft and anyone else waiting, keep your fingers crossed.

Thanks,

I sent you a PM, did you send a letter of intent or anything similiar, I remeber Dr. H saying that since your rank can't change that it would not be able to push you up the list.

Moving on such short notice is probably not going to be too much fun, but I am sure its a small price to pay. Good luck

I'M IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe it, I got the email today, i am an out of stater.

I am still trying to get over the excitment, this was my only waitlist and only acceptance. It has been a very LONG jounrey for me to get to this point.

Does anyone have any recommendaitons about where I should live, or how I should even go about finding a place, I am from the west coast and have no idea about Richmond.

Good luck to everyone else waiting, I hope for the best for all of you.

That's awesome Lookleft...congratulations!

Congrats, Bos and Look.
One waitlist one acceptance surely makes us very UNIQUE, doesn't it? 😀

If you are from Cali, you might want to fly and drive (a new car.) That is to buy a cheap one way ticket to Washington DC and then drive a 2004 Honda that you?ve bought there, at good price, to Richmond. You could have made a reservation for an apartment at Trolley Square in advance. The price may not be something anyone would appreciate because it is both absolutely and relatively more expensive than its peers in term of location and comprehensive rent. And water is not included in the rent along with the ?all utilities included.? But it is the only one available. The apartment still is very close to the campus connector stops in either direction. VCU shuttle services use transit buses and are free for VCU students. There are only two stops for the Campus Connector between Trolley and MCV. Or you can just walk the one-mile distance.

A cheap one way plane ticket ($150) is offered by Air Tran from LAX or another airline from John Wayne Airport in Long Beach. Air Tran allows three pieces of check in baggage.

A 2004 Honda at good price is available. The sale person can pick you up from Dulles or Washington DC airports. The strategy save hundreds of $ if you have your love ones seeing you there.

You?d live in Trolley Square apartment at 311 W Franklin but the management is at 104 W Franklin, 23220, 1-800-443 8890.

But in case you don?t mind sharing, there are always people looking for room-mates at

Or http://www.students.vcu.edu/commons/offcampus/

Here are apartments downtown within walking distance: http://www.shockoeproperties.com/vra.asp
Also search for American Heritage, expensive but it is the closest, only .39 miles distance one way. Good only if you don?t have a car.

Shop online for cheap furniture in classified ads at richmond.com, Sears.com (mattress sales ended yesterday) and officedepot.com (free shipping over $50.) Better pick up things at Walmart, Target and especially IKEA (in Woodbridge) than pay the shipping at their dot-com stores. Budget.com has cargo van for rent at 29.99 a day plus 46 cents per each mile over the limit of about 150?, unlimited mileage costs $39.99 per day.

Thanks Calc,

That is a lot of great info, yeah I am going to moving from Cali. Guess its apartment shopping time.

Looking forward to meeting everyone

lookleft,

congrats! look forward to seeing ya and everyone else at orientation. i'm kind of in the same boat as you, meaning i'm moving from cali too. true, it has been a huge headache. i'm planning on shipping my car, it's costing about 900 bucks, but the problem is that there is a limit of how much stuff you can put in there, which kinda sucks. they told me 150lbs, no more than that. i got a plane ticket from jet blue flying into dulles (have family in DC, gonna chill with them for a couple days b4 driving down to richmond). as far as apartments go, that was by far the biggest headache for me. i didn't make a trip down there in regard to my apart situation because i was waitlisted at another school, and i thought i was gonna be hearing back from them, guess not though. anyway, i did some extensive online searching on apartments.com, rent.com, forrent.com, apartmentguie.com, monroeproperties.com, styleweekly.com, and richmond.com. i narrowed my findings to two properties, those were the river lofts at tobacco row and the lofts at canal walk, which are both really close to one another. from what i've heard, both are really nice places and brand new. river lofts just opened up a brand new phase and canal loft walks is opening there phase 2 on sep 1st. i ended up choosing the lofts at canal walk because they include all utilities, so its just one flat payment for everything, and the rent is a little cheaper than the other place. im actually going to be living in a one bedroom for the month of august, then transferring into the new apartments in phase 2 on sep 1st. according to what the leasing people were telling me, there are still a lot of openings for phase 2, so you might want to check it out. rent is around 650 for a studio/loft and 8-900 for a one bedroom. not bad, especially coming from cali. anyway, if u need any other help, please dont hesitate to PM me. take care, and again, congrats!
