MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

It depends on the cat. Some cats completely freak out.

Hey, does anyone (female) want to take my place at the Shivs volleyball game tomorrow night if no one on the team steps up? I'm still too fluey.

In the same spirit, any gunnerish M2s wanna take my spot on anesthesia tomorrow? You'll probably get to throw in a couple IVs, maybe intubate, not to mention an arterial line or two.

I would love to stop feeling like I'm gonna spew.

I suppose if there are any M3s currently on any other service (perhaps GSII?) willing to take my spot for the day that would be swell as well.

Before I even got to the bottom lines I was thinking I so wanted to do that.

By the way, I was in an ortho ortho ortho case on Friday, and a certain resident started singing that Rehab song by Amy Winehouse. I told him I was going to have it stuck in my head all day, and he says "but it's true! None of my patients want to go to physical rehab!"

That also reminds me...why do they wear those big ol' spacesuit helmets during a hip procedure?

You get blood splashed on you quite easily in knee and hip replacements. I love the space suits because I don't have to wear a mask, and I can touch my head because they're sterile on the top.

Singing residents... did he have a beard?

What about M1s? I would love to take you up on that offer? need my phone number?

Sorry, you need to pass ethics before we can allow you to touch any real patients. Would hate to have another Tuskegee incident.

He in fact did. He also used his best over-the-top German accent to shout "Prepare the patient for surgery!" as he walked out of the room.

The guy cracks me up. He was doing some bone stuff in the Children's ED in July and did a good job teaching then.

I bet it's Joe Schwab (son of Dr. Schwab who lectured to us in anatomy) one of the smartest (he knows his stuff and medicine in general) and funniest people I know.

On ortho, I'd have Tim Mullin walking around shouting "Hello Cleveland!" and Joe singing random stuff and quoting entire Simpson's episodes.

Yeah, that's who it is, I just didn't want to drop his name on here that easily 😉

That guy gives me hope for future ortho surgeons 😉

ps....chicken has bones

Joe was Student Assembly president when we were first years... he gave his speech during orientation week about making sure to have balance and not ignore your personal life... then got paged (I think he was on trauma or transplant at the time). It was excellent and ironic.

Match Day is one month and two days from today. Just thought I'd share.

I think I might attempt eating some cereal this morning. Yesterday my oral intake completely consisted of a kashi bar, some applesauce, a small amount of water and some koolaid.

Today my guts are rollin', rolling' rollin'.

That's my little sister's orthopedic surgeon. I introduced myself to him after his lecture, and the first words out of his mouth were "Well, you're not as tall as your parents." 🙄

shouldn't have lost the afro.

so..........what exactly were we supposed to learn from the gay and lesbian panels yesterday?
My guess:
1. "queer" and "****" are okay but "sir" or "ma'am" are horribly offensive.
2. common sense stuff that modern, polite, and socially conscious people know.
3. don't make any assumptions, ever.

3. don't make any assumptions, ever.
Interestingly enough, one of our panel members basically assumed we were all ig'nant and closed-minded right from the start. "It's not okay to judge someone, unless you're judging that they're going to judge you." One of our classmates basically called him out on it.

I don't know that I really learned anything new, but it was interesting.

That's what I remember from that day (it seems so long ago now...), that ironically I felt like I was being unfairly judged from the start as being some kind of horrible judgmental person. It was offensive. For an ultra-rightwing conservative I actually consider myself pretty open-minded and tolerant.

Or would it be infra-rightwing? I always forget which wavelengths are on which side of the spectrum.

I'm pretty liberal when it comes to the things we discussed on that panel day, and even I was offended by their general attitude towards us. I got the impression that we got a bad sample of panelists because sometimes the pissed off ones are the loudmouths that try every which way to be heard.

Ditto. I have several gay friends. Granted, most of them live in London, but every time I go back there, I try to see them. I was horribly offended that day. It was like "all you heterosexuals have never met a gay person before, this is how ALL LGBT etc. like to be treated."

You know what makes me angry?!? People who get a study room early in the morning, leave their stuff, and go to class for 4+ hours. There was a girl today with pictures up on the wall and had stuff on the shelves like it was her little office. I realize you can move people's stuff, but I can't imagine them being too thrilled when I'm sitting in the room after throwing their stuff in the hallway. Any alternatives?

People in my class moved stuff out. I say go for it. Start Nerd Room War II. Just tell security or something that you're doing it, so you don't get in trouble. We had someoen in my class (who's no longer in the class have a coffee maker in "their" room.)

I only moved stuff out once, and it was obvious that whoever "saved" it had only grabbed a bunch of random folders and papers from the open mailboxes and left it in there. I put the stuff in the hallway, and after 12 hours, nobody had come back to claim "their" papers.

The only time I save a room for any period of time is when there are plenty of other rooms open.

I think the policy is that you stack it in the corner. No, they're not going to be thrilled, but they can get over it. You only get to abandon a room for an hour, then it's anybody's room. A little enforcement would do some people a world of good.

It just bugs me when someone saves it overnight. There's one girl who does this often, and she leaves a LOT of stuff in there - an entire grid of flashcards, lots of papers, books, a jacket, etc. It's intimidating to think of moving it all.

Hehe...I guess it's not that bad yet. Let the Nerd Room Wars begin!

Man, I don't study as much as I thought I would in med school, but the studying is a lot harder than I thought it would be.

I totally agree! I had a study room this morning and thought about saving it while I went to class, but decided not to because I don't think it is very fair for other students. It makes me so mad when over half of the rooms are just full of random papers and whatnot with nobody in them. So many more people could use rooms if others would just pick up their stuff when they are going to be gone for more than an hour.

Although I have never done it, I often consider saving rooms because I know that if I don't do it somebody else will, and I will not be able to get a room again until the evening. I admire anybody with the guts to take over a room that has been "saved."

I don't even bother with the study rooms anymore. If I need a quiet space, I take a room in the CMUTs. Gil even brought me whiteboard pens one day, which was awesome. Now that the dog, I mean, pig, I mean live physiology lab is over, I should be able to get a spot again.

M1 year I went to the CMUTs/SMUTs when I couldn't get a nerd room. Then I started studying in the library (yay northeastish corner!)

Sometimes I just like to write on the whiteboards. Or the whitewalls.

I used the SMUTs fairly often in the spring semesters.

So, M3s and M4s, we got this in our e-mail:
Here are a few pointers for the upcoming Human Sexuality exam (this is NOT an inclusive list of everything you will need to know):
1. Be familiar with the PLISSIT model
2. There will be several case vignettes of patient's with sexual problems where you will have to identify whether the problem is global or context specific, primary or secondary, and where in the sexual response cycle it is occurring.
3. Be familiar with the substances or hormones that can increase or decrease sexual desire
4. Know that 49% of pregnancies were unintended in the US in 2002
5. Know the reasons women give for having an abortion after 16 weeks and what the most common reason is
6. Know the manifestations that occur in each stage of syphilis
7. Be familiar with the vaginitides
8. Know the contraindications for combined hormonal contraception
9. Know which electrolyte abnormality is a contraindication for Yasmin
10. Know the half-lives of the various phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors

Does that sound fairly all-inclusive?

The worst thing you could do is go in there and shuffle her flash cards. Do that then write a note on the whiteboard. "WE'RE WATCHING YOU"

Better yet, make new flash cards with all kinds of wacky incorrect information so she looks like a complete idiot on the exam.

I think you over-withheld.
Actually, if not for the education credit, my refund would be $33. Plus, to be honest, if the money is in our checking account, my wife is more likely to spend it. I'd rather have it arrive in a lump sum at the end of the year so we can just dump it in savings.

Plus, I won't be buying that much of a car.

Gee, I was pullling your leg and it came off in my hand! 🙂

If you have a beef with something saving an used space overnight, then address it with him or her and stop making a big issue over something as trivial as this.Do you have to post everything going on internally at your school on sdn? Do you wash all your dirty linens in public? Take the high road and discuss it with the person.I hate people who discuss others in such an extremely malicious way as you just did. It is becoming unbecoming of certain ppeople in the class talking badly about others.....so unfortunate

any fish they dont even bother to name is going to taste nasty.
