MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
unless you're sacrificed by savages. then you probably won't have a say in the matter.

Well, I won't be very concerned about the heath risks of smoking given that circumstance. And, as a matter of fact, if I am to be sacrificed by savages they had better have a loaded bong around.

Where do you guys get this stuff? More importantly, how much time is spent on youtube?

It comes from having no life. Kinda like this thread. We've not only surpassed Oklahoma, but I also went to see that we've had >100 posts today. I'm a geek. Google video is also a good site. and ebaumsworld, and stupidvideo.com

oooooooooooooooooooooooooh honey honey

after today's lab session I can say with absolute certainty that I will never smoke.
I figured our chap would have some charred lungs because most people who were in the military 30-60 years ago had some tobacky habits. But they're nice and pretty.

I peruse other internet forums and video sites so as to be on the cutting edge of the internet funnies. I just got a forward from my mom that I'd seen about three years ago, and one from my brother that I saw six months ago. They need to get with the times. 🙄

Meanwhile, I've been listening to this pretty non-stop. 😛 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT_NoANNgoY I love crazy fast guitars.

this one's always good for a laugh (Maury's "NOT the father" episodes): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-D34OZCRTE

and here's what you do if you really think life is too long anyways (base jumping with a wing suit flying over rocks at 120mph) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_NaYHb87U8

Okay, so I'm sending some letters to some of the PIs in the emergency department because I'm interested in doing something in the ED next summer. I'm not at all interested in bench science, but I certainly love EMS. I need to find a PI first, right? And then s/he and I will submit something at the end of the semester for funding?

So should I send a cover letter and resume right from the start? I'm guessing yes, so I'm working on it now, but should I really include anything other than my EMS and research experience? I can't imagine they care if I was in PBK or volunteered at a nursing home.

i just sent emails saying "hi, i'm blah blah and I like emergency medicine, especially EMS and I wanna do research, blah blah blah." the end. then I wrote up a resume in case they wanted to see it when I met them. which I never actually did cause research sucks.

still wondering why you didn't join SEMA, by the way. influential people in the department are very pleased with SEMA.

It'd just be nice if you guys weren't having your lunch on Thursday. Then A) I could come since last year I had to miss it. B) Other people could go to the jazz band concert.

i blame Louis Armstrong.

spoken like a true UW Madison wannabe.

Please...I come from a place that would put Madison to shame.

I need a haircut. Who has ideas?

I need a haircut. Who has ideas?

i had an idea once. it was for a grand snow-fighting machine. like a snow-tank. It was a vehicle that essentially had a snowblower type intake at the front. you drove through snow and it gathered it into a special resevoir, which them formed the snow into balls or whatever form you needed to attack your enemies. sprays, large chunks, ice covered projectiles, whatever. it would additionally have other weapons like ice-slick depositers and a flame thrower. Essentially would be a giant enclosed snowblower.

that was an idea.

It depends. Do you want an "Honors" in rawk? If so, the choice is easy...

haha. But, since I'm half black, asian and jewish I don't think I could manipulate my hair to do that. What else you got?

Don't Do It Brian! Let Them Get Married! Don't Do It! Aww ****, He Did It.

This haircut truly destroys all racial divides. Enjoy.

like the chick on napoleon dynamite? I drove through Idaho on the way over here and I swear that every person I saw was like napoleon.

Man, I gotta spend $100+ to replace a burnt out headlight on my Acura. Those HID bulbs are PRICEY. A regular bulb is about $12, but these bad boys are over $100 from the cheap online sources, and it's $160 installed from the dealer. It's a chore to get at it too, so I might have to buckle under.

um....can an MS0 crash your thread?

I was just wondering if anyone did the summer research program,
1. How competitive is it?
2. Do they really take people with no research experience? (I know they say they do.)
3. I'm scared of ninjas. Will that be a problem?

I did the summer research, this past year 101 people did it. There was a guy in my lab with no prior research experience. The purpose of the program is for people to get experience doing research, so yeah, they take people. =)

I did bench work, but I worked for an orthopod, so I also got to go into surgery a few days (before July when the new residents came in).

I had friends who did a lot of data entry -- that'd drive me insane though.

As for being afraid of Ninjas... stay away from here on 31 October. Here and the VA -- especially the in patient unit. 😉 Right Funk?

I just hope they check the in-patients for weapons before admitting them. The last thing I need is for a bunch of vets suffering from PTSD to think I'm "Charlie" come to get them when I stroll into the ward in full ninja garb. That could be awkward.

Do you think I could still get a high pass if I had to beat up a ward of army vets in self-defense?

Only if you do a 2nd interview and turn in 5 more write ups.

:scared:

Ugh, hopefully no data entry for me; I'd rather keep working my real job if that's the case. For the summer research program, you have to design and conduct your own study, right? Or can you just work on a preexisting project?

Acceptances are starting to roll in.....dare I start the Class of 2011 thread?

aw, c'mon, we just passed up the Oklahoma crew.

Yeah, I gotta say, we have a good thing going here. I'd hate to see it get taken away so quickly after we've definitively taken over the forum. because I know we'll start posting less in here if 2011 pops up.

It's hard enough that the 2009 thread....MY CLASS THREAD, has slowly become ignored, even when I try to revive it.

I figured we were all just preparing for our transition into the class of 2010 after pharm has its way with us.

and you KNOW what will happen to any 2011 thread as soon as it is started. We...have a way of taking things over.

The reason the 2009 thread slowed down is because it is full of inside jokes.

Hate to break it to you, but the majority of these posts are inside jokes too. Just so happens that you are now on the "inside". Lucky you, huh?

that period should be in the "inside" of those quotation marks, "Funk."

nope.

Do I need to be prepared for the first PBL thing? I don't have any information that says what I should be googling.

if they didn't tell you to do anything you probably don't.

the first one for us was basically a "let's all introduce ourselves" thing, then we went over a quick basic case, then they told us to informally practice researching it at the computer instruction session you have to go to. i actually found that session very helpful to learn how to find crap with the library. now I'm a find-crap-at-the-library guru.

Is the medical interviewing course worth anything?

it sounds like you're angry about something. Would you tell me more about that?

+1 pts to me for use of an open-ended question.

I am angry. Big won't commit to Carrie and he seems to be just stringing her along.

Also, by "open ended question" did you mean that it was the type of question that would cause most women to talk continuously for at least 10 minutes?

Is the medical interviewing course worth anything?

sort of. maybe a little practice. but it still kind of feels contrived. if anything it gives you a sense of what kinds of questions are "good" as well as a general format for the interview. the usefulness can be varied by your small group leader as well. being prepared before your own interview is handy...have an outline you can follow or a "worksheet" with pertinent information you want to ask about, then fill it in as you go. It's a tad uncomfortable knowing the "patient" is faking and that everyone is watching you, but it's even more uncomfortable in psych M2 year when you're doing it with a real patient that is potentially volatile.

my small group leader made a jerkoff-ish comment about EMTs our second or third session, so I was real thrilled with her about that.
