Yeah, they only show your signature 1x/page now to save on clutter.

Which then makes it MY job to create the clutter.

I noticed they deleted our 2009 thread. Breaks my heart.

Haven't had many new folk in here lately.

Another plug for MCW for those of you still not convinced: We have doors!!! And windows!!! And, to show no expense was spared in our learning facilities...occasionally even CARPET. I don't know what YOU call that, but I call it LUXURY.

Also, isn't wisconsin the 4th safest place in america. Whereas Las Vegas is the worst.

I'll be in Milwaukee at about 10pm this evening (all the way from Oklahoma). My flight back home isn't until Sat morning. So, if any other interviewers or current med students would like to show me the town Friday night, that would be fantabulous! couldn't do the stay at a student's thing b/c of how late my flight comes in. PM if you're interested... hopefully I'll find internet to use somewhere. Otherwise, I'll be hanging out at the caf. for lunch!

So that's why the 2010 forum has been taken over by the class of 2009! ;-) Just kidding; it's been fun reading this thread...let's try and keep it near the top of the forums.

So I remember when I went out there to interview in December, there was construction going on, and talks of a new student game room or whatever you call it. Am I remembering correctly? Is that construction still happening, and/or when is it expected to be completed? What other additions are expected? Just curious.

The new student gameroom is still under construction. I've heard that they plan on having it open this December. The other construction you're thinking about is probably the new basic science research building that is going up next to the school. That project, along with a new wing connecting the new research building with the existing MCW building, is supposed to be done this summer. Finally, one more project that they may not have started when you were out here is a new parking ramp across the street from both the school and new research building. I have no idea when that is supposed to be done, but hopefully soon considering the state of parking around campus!

So yeah, the times around MCW- they are a'changin.

The parking ramp was originally slated to be done right before school starts in the fall. Of course, like most construction projects, they are running behind schedule. Expect parking to be a little crazy for a few weeks in August/September.

Does anyone know when MCW will tell us what kind of aid we qualify for? I think it's sometime this month, but I just wanted to double check. I'll be moving up to my new place in West Allis at the end of May, so I'm starting to get pretty excited. Anyone else going to be in town early?

I had called the financial aid office the other day to make sure my credit report and all the other necessary stuff was in and was told that we should be expecting a financial aid package to arrive in May. I'm hoping that it is in the beginning of May (before the 15th) so that people who are still deciding on schools can use the amount of aid to help make their decision.

I'm already living and working in Milwaukee, but I'll be apartment hunting over the next few weeks and moving closer to campus by July. And then roommate hunting! It feels a little odd; I've been living alone for the last year and really enjoying it. Anybody want a roommate with a piano?

I'm in Tosa now and I'll be here all summer. For any baseball fans out there, the Brewers opened the season with a win today. This is a good year to jump on the Brewers bandwagon for anyone unfamiliar with the team. They have more legitimate talent on their team this year than they've had since the early 80s.
If anyone else enjoys baseball or is looking for something to do in Milwaukee, the Brewers are actually in town during the middle of orientation week. They're playing the Cubs. It's always a fun matchup that draws near sold out crowds (unfortunately the crowds usually consist of more Cubs fans than Brewers fans, but that's slowly changing).

I'm a huge Marlins fan, been following them since 1991 when it was announced that Florida would get a team. Unfortunately, it looks like we'll be losing them to San Antonio or some other city. That's just shameful. Anyway, I definitely want to see them play whenever they're in Milwaukee. And I know what it's like to go see your team play at home and have another team's fans take over the stadium - whenever the Marlins play the Braves or Yankees, all their fans seem to show up.

Someone on the orientation committee is working on getting a big block of tickets for one of the games that week. I'm sure you'll get something about it in one of your mailings sooner or later. Be sure to send back your ticket request right away, because I'm sure ticket availability will be limited.

On the other hand, if they go to the art museum they might actually have somebody in their class go with them. Wasn't a big seller this year for our class, unfortunately. But I thought it was awesome.

I thought the art museum was awesome, and I've even been there before. The only thing that sucks is that you've got to pay extra/be a member to see the visiting exhibits. Otherwise the art pretty much stays the same like all museums, so once you've seen it that's about it. However, student memberships are only like $25.

But I would choose Brewers first any day.

I got to go to both the museum and the zoo cuz I already had cpr certification. ~1/2 the class had cpr those afternoons.

You're more cultured than I. I went to the zoo. That was fun, but it rained. We've got another orientation meeting coming up in a few weeks, so hopefully we'll know more about the Brewer's tickets. All I know is that it may be a bit difficult to get a lot of tickets because they're playing the Cubs that week.

I've been using SDN for a long time now, and just recently found out about the forums. =)

What do I do as soon as I get home from studying CTB at Starbucks? That's right, log into the forum. Maybe after this new discovery I'll be on the 5 year plan. 😉

Oh yeah, and congrats to everyone who's gotten into MCW for this coming year. =)

.....and you are....?

When is administration going to start sending us information about orientation and room mates, and financial aid etc.... I haven't heard anything since my acceptance like 3 months ago. Oh yeah, I guess there was a reminder to file for financial aid. But other than that, nothing. A Brewers game sounds fun!!! I hope that happens. A baseball game with a large group would be a blast.

I am surprised to here that there is a zoo there? I just figured some animals can't tolerate such cold winters. I think the zoo here in San Diego is "world" famous. I met some people in the mountains this year that were visiting from South Africa, and the first thing they asked when we said we were from San Diego was "Do you work at that zoo!!!" As if that is the only thing they new about San Diego, and we must all work at the zoo!!!

They take the animals indoors in winter. Which is kind of what I do: take myself indoors. Okay, not completely true since I'm a bicycle commuter. But sort of.

I'm planning to go to campus in the next week or two and take a first look at the housing listings and try to sign up with the roommate matching service thingy and start apartment-hunting. A bit scary-I've been in my current apartment ten years, the longest I've lived in one place in my whole life. I've gotta pare down. Anybody want to buy a weight machine? 😉

The twin cities even has 2 zoos! I guess I would say that the zoo is all right, but I really have nothing to compare it too.

I think you get sent more stuff in May or June. But I was waitlisted, so I'm guessing. They don't really send anything before then cuz they don't want to waste sending it to people with multiple acceptances who may not even go here. i.e. wait til the class is somewhat "official" I guess you could say.

Samenewme, good luck on the house hunting. And the roommate thing too. :luck: I'm planning on moving out of my current apartment, cuz I really, really, really don't want a roommate again, and I need something cheaper. No offense to any of you, but I don't want to live with you. :meanie:

By the way, Ashleigh, nice pic. 🙂

They'll probably start sending stuff out after the class is kinda "finalized" since they have the waitlist going, but I'm assuming it won't be until after the May deadline. I'm definitely not sure though, since I didn't get in until 12 July last year.

As for the stuff during orientation, we haven't even finalized what we're doing for the schedule, and there's going to be a "survival" guide, and that hasn't been made yet. Still a lot of stuff to do before the committee's got stuff sorted.

As for the zoo... it's no San Diego Zoo or Wild life park thing. It's good for me, I don't have a zoo where I'm from (Maui), but I haven't been to the zoo since orientation.

I think just about everyone on SDN has thought that I'm a guy. Is it just the name or do I talk like a guy? But if you think about it, the name makes sense. Plus, my friends called me Pete in undergrad.

So, how many of you in the class of 2010 thought I was a guy? 😱

I am pretty sure that I assumed you were a guy. I remember thinking that all of the current med students on here were guys, so that included you. Very interesting... How does akpete make sense? Why did your friends call you Pete? Just curious.

On more official business..... will renters let you sign a lease in June that doesn't start till August. I am also a little skeptical about signing a lease by myself for a 2 or 3 bedroom place and then having to look for a room mate or 2 after that. The room mate list doesn't come out till June, so I was thinking of waiting till middle of June to go out there and look instead of late May which was my original plan. That way I can try to find a room mate then we can look together, and I won't get stuck living with one of you wierdos!! (j/K) When did most people look for places last year?

I moved out here on 29 July and started looking for an apartment immediately -- literally immediately, my mom and I had appointments right after I flew in and bought my car. I live in the Reserve (along with what seems like half the school) and the only type of apt they had at the time I needed a place was a 2 bedroom, so I got that by myself. I needed a place immediately because I moved out from Hawaii... hard to store stuff and buy furniture while living out of a hotel, and my mom was here for only a week before orientation to help me, so we had to get everything done during that time. During orientation, I didn't really do much with my mom in terms of preparing the apartment.

Yeah, I know I'm a cheater. O=) Oh well. =) If I had used my AIM sn and not had a picture of myself being stupid, I could sound "guy-ish." We both aren't the girliest girls in the class, ya know. 😉 I was confused by the "pete" in your name, even though, now I know it's you, it does make a lot of sense. How did I get into med school? (Since your sn totally didn't register with me.)

my last name is Peterson. so there ya go.

I don't see why you can't sign a lease in June for Aug. The only factor in how early you can sign a lease is how early a landlord knows it's available. At my undergrad, they'd get really pushy, and most people had to know if they were renewing or vacating by about 6 mo. into a lease. But it's not that bad here, as far as I know. As for the roommate thing, I can't help you out, cuz I don't have one. But I could try to find out, cuz I don't think anyone else from 2009 on here does either.

My biggest advice for next year. Don't procrastinate. I'm the ultimate at it, and every block I say that I'm going to keep up and not brush everything off til the end, but I do it everytime. Today I'm attempting to read 9 chapters of physiology. :scared:

I found & signed a lease for my place in April...moved in mid-June. I was EARLY, though. A lot of people don't start looking until June, so I'm sure you won't have a problem if you wait until the list comes out. People on SDN sort of self-select to be the type of person that looks really early, but most of your class that's not posting on this thread probably haven't even thought about housing yet.

You're right to be wary of signing a lease assuming you will be able to find roommates that will want to live in the housing you have picked out. That would be a good way to wind up paying 3x the rent you wanted.

By the way, however they work the roommate list...it's awesome. All of the people I know who found their roommate(s) from the list are perfect matches for each other.

As for when your prospective landlords will let you sign a lease, it all depends on when they find out what their availability will be. If landlords out here know that they will have people moving out in August, I'm sure they will let you sign a lease to start then. Personally, I am glad that I moved out here early (although June was WAY early)...I wouldn't have wanted to try to figure out the city in the 1 week before orientation started if I had moved in August.

Ashleigh, that sucks that the Reserve only had 2 BR places left when you came out here. Are you moving to a smaller place after your lease is up?

I'm trying to go through my notes for a second time (not a 2nd time today, mind you, but total). 100 more pages. I'll reread the renal stuff tomorrow. 😛

I'm so tired of being at school already.

[EDIT]: I'm staying at the Reserve. My mom wanted me to live there, and she said my dad would help me with rent, until they found out it might cause problems with my loans. I've got too big furniture to move. =) My parents said they'd pay for movers to move me wherever I match as a graduation present.

I AM THE EXACT SAME WAY!!! Every weekend before a test block this whole year I have made a SOLEMN VOW to keep up with the material the next block and study at least a little bit every day. Then I wind up doing pretty decent on the tests, I think to myself, I'm glad I didn't study more for that test than I had to, and my whole plan is out the window a few days later. I started making my solemn vows on Thursday this time, but then I decided that I'm just not gonna fight nature any more. Next block, I'm embracing my procrastinating ways!

(Just finished reading my 6th phys chapter today, btw...time to get back to it)

Hell yeah! I'll totally jump on that bandwagon. (I only watched one Badger hockey game this year. 🙁 ) My brother is a huge fan, though...I'll bet he's really drunk right now.

Awesome!! I really wish I could have gone to the games since it was here in Milwaukee, but 1) couldn't afford it, and 2) stupid exams. 😡

So now both the women and men's teams have won the title this year. First time the women's trophy has left MN.

Can any of you current M1's and M2's tell me if there is some kind of parent/family day? I've heard the white coat ceremony is the friday of orientation week. I know a few med schools have some type of family day where the school shows the parents what a day in the life of a med student is like. I'm just wondering if MCW does this, possibly around the white coat ceremony?

Well, the day of the White Coat ceremony there is a special "orientation" for family...they get a tour and hear about our curriculum and stuff and I think get a "your son/daughter/significant other" now has no life, expect them to be stressed out" kind of talk.

From what I can see that's pretty much it for "family day."
