anyone recommend one lender over another? I need to hurry up and choose one today or tomorrow.

I narrowed it down to THE vs. US Bank, and then the accountant I'm dating very kindly did a current value of annuity calculation that determined that at 1.3% repayment bonus, THE is the better deal, and remains the better deal even if they drop the repayment bonus to 1%. If it drops all the way to .5%, it's about $3000 more over the life of the loan. I've also heard here that the service is better with THE. Plus it appears US Bank capitalizes your interest when you go from grace period to deferment and again when you go into repayment, whereas THE only does it once. I don't know how much that saves, though.

So anyway, I went with THE.

Of course, the quality of the service of the lender doesn't matter if they sell your loan later to some jerky company.

NO 1. Chinese take out. On north and 61stish. They also deliver.

Yeesh...I would stay away from this place. I got seafood lo-mein there once that tasted and smelled like rotting fish. A guy from school got violently ill with food poisoning after eating another dish there. If you want good Chinese check out Panda Hut or China East (no delivery, unfortunately).

I'm in charge of the raffle for the M-1s at the end of orientation week, and in walking around Wauwatosa trying to drum up donations I've discovered so many cool stores and restaurants that I never knew existed! I would seriously recommend that you newbies just walk around Tosa Village for a while and check out what's out there.

I doubt Applebees will be able to unseat the Chancery crowd...even though they're both similar, I feel like the Chancery is more of a bar-type atmosphere.

Yeah, to whom do I give the donation for the raffle? And do I need to put warning labels on it due to very sharp edges and corrosive effects on skin?

You could just not put labels, and maybe the recipient could have a brief tour of the ER along with their prize.

I believe THE states that they will never sell your loan. I could be wrong though.

My lender sold my loans to BB Links, and they make some GREAT hickory smoked jerky, so I'm not complaining too much.

speaking of walmarts... As I was driving across America through Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Minnesota I noticed that our corporate ratios are like this: For every starbucks there are 3 subways and for every subway there are 2 walmarts.

Shut up! Are you kidding me? I love papa murphy's but I didn't know there was one here.

I 😍 Target.

There's also Chipotle, Qdoba, Culver's (frozen custard and burgers), Burger King, Schlosky's (sp?), Arby's, Noodles & Co, Quiznos, Topper's Pizza (trust me it's good. delivery until ~ 3am) and McDonalds all on the corner of Capital and 124th St. oh, and starbucks too. which is also where the Target is, as well as Jewel-Osco (grocery/drug store). There is a taco bell in the Target.

There's a Jewel-Osco there? How exciting! Jewel-Osco is the best!

You Chicago people... what's so exciting about Jewel-Osco? I can see getting excited about Costco, but I don't understand the Jewel Osco thing. =)

Jewel-Osco? You people obviously are in serious need of a Super Target or Meijer....only then will you know shopping bliss. You might compare them to a super-Walmart, only less trashy.

...and I would like to say that I based my decision on coming here on the fact that there is a QDoba's within a mile of the school. I drool just thinking about it 🙂

If you actually have a non-lethal donation, Marc, you can either drop it off in Sue Haldemann's office (up in Student Affairs), or you can give it to Ed Oberle (I'm too busy with wedding stuff to deal with the raffle until next week). I can PM you Ed's phone number if you need it.

We got some good sheeyot for you M-1s this year. Lots of gift certificates to restaurants, bars, and shops. Including a scarf worth $150 and a purse worth $200 from one of the local boutiques for a couple of you lucky ladies.

When's the big day? Do you guys have enough stuff? I tried to find something for OSIG to give, but couldn't, and I have no money. =(

This Saturday! I am excited for the wedding to be here so I don't have to deal with the stupid little details that need to be taken care of any more. Unfortunately, the week after the wedding will be filled with writing thank-you notes for both our wedding guests, and the people who donated to the raffle. But the week after that is our cruise to Bermuda!

I believe we have collected or will soon collect enough donations for everyone in the class to win something. Don't let that stop any of you org. presidents from donating if possible, though! Some of the prizes we put together will be substantially crappier than others, so we are always looking for little things to sweeten up the smaller prizes.

Do you guys realize this thread ranks 4th among the other "Class of 2010" threads in number of replies?! That's pretty sweet, although I'm willing to bet the posts from 2009ers outnumber the posts from 2010ers in this thread.

Oooh. Congrats! You're the 2nd couple I know getting married this Saturday. However, I don't envy you writing thank you notes. I have a hard enough time writing them in general -- I haven't been good about it since 7th grade.

Just wondering if anybody wants to add a flip cup tournament to the orientation week schedule.

We had a flip cup tournament last year after the 2nd block of exams. Great party, and we even had wildly inappropriate t-shirts made for it.

Unfortunately, there has already been some squabbling among the orientation committee about organizing non-alcoholic events for people to participate in. I doubt adding a flip cup tourney to the list would fly when people are already pissed about having events scheduled at a bar. I would encourage you to host one yourself, though.

I think you should schedule it the week after as a "hooray....we finished our first week of med school". However, I must confess my true intentions. I wont be back in town for till the 17th and it would be great to finally meet yall (except for samenewme cause apparently she has replaced me with that tramp marc...homewrecker). 😛

No, I'm over Marc. I've lost track now, but I think I was fixating on inanimate objects and I'm no longer sure whether the final assessment was that I am heading for a complete disintegration of personality. But I'll always 😍 you, Pratik!

For those of you living at Normandy Village apartment, which cell phone company has good reception inside the apartment? Thanks.

A friend and I got our stuff partly moved in to the Overlook today. We then ate at the Chancery before driving back home. Will there be some orientation activities there? I'm looking forward to it...

I think on Wednesday night there's something planned there during the Chancery's karaoke night.

Looks like I won't be seeing you guys on Monday when everyone introduces themselves to the M1s. I'm getting out of MKE for a mini-vacation and out of the sauna -- my escape, Tucson -- hey, it's a dry heat. =) Stop by the Ortho group table. I have airheads!

Definitely not US Cellular, as I'm looking at my phone right now and have one "bar" which is sporadic and usually drops calls. You might be best off at least having a cheap land line for emergencies.

Actually, probably none of them. I don't understand why, but Normandy village is in a cell phone black hole. I have T-Mobile, and it usually fluctuates between one and 3 bars. It works well enough, and it does get better outside, but I was getting frustrated with the dropped calls. Plus, I could hear everyone else, but they wouldn't be able to hear me and I wouldn't know it. I just got landline installed. I waited the entire first year here in case I moved, but I stayed, so I decided it was time to get it. I've been forwarding all my cell calls to my landline so I didn't have to worry about people getting my new number.

I would try it out for a while and see how your own phone works before spending the extra money. My phone would work maybe 50% of the time.

Oh, and Ashleigh, you're leaving when it's gonna cool down. How ironic. Today's supposed to be the last day of heat, then it's 70s and low/mid 80s. Personally I would rather have 85-95 all summer!!

I know! Dang it. I should've gone last week, or earlier this week. And I just heard that the a/c may not work in my condo... again. It broke when I lived there my sr year too. I may just have to spend all my time in the pool or at restaurants eating Mexican food.

So,

I am here, yet have not yet found a place to live. Does anyone know of a nice 1 bedroom appt, or even 2 bedroom appt for rent? I would really love the help.

There are quite a few for rent signs in my neighborhood around 62nd, south of Bluemound. I'm not sure of the sizes but there are quite a few both singles and doubles around the area. They look like the kind who just stick a sign out in the yard and hope for the best so you'll have to drive around and see. Did you go to the student affairs office and look in the book for vacant apartments? There may also still be people on the roommate list there if you can do the roommate thing. There are also listings on the bulletin board outside the cafeteria.

Lots of vague help, huh? If you want someone to help you look (drive while you write down phone numbers, or vice versa), let me know. I'm game.

Thanks for offering the help.

I looked at the bulletin board and the book, and have some leads, I am going to check out some of them tommorrow, and I walked around the college. Right now for transportation I am using the Radisson shuttle, but I will let you know if I need any more help.

South of MCW seems to be the best place to look. I was told to stay west of 65th by a buddy. If you stay in Wauwatosa, it is a bit more expensive.

Where I'm living, they have a sign out for a one bedroom. It's a pretty nice place so far. I just moved in yesterday. It's on Bluemound and around 103rd. There isn't actually a street that's 103...but that's technically where it should be. It's Dolphin Apartments and it's right next to Camille Apartments or smthg (I think it's an assisted living place).

You can also check out Bluemound Village Apartments. I think they still have some openings and they're pretty nice for a reasonable price. They're also pretty close to the school. Good luck!

Thanks everyone,

I am going to check out all of these places.

Incoming M1s....what kind of candy do you want at the Student Emergency Medicine Association desk at the Org Fair? I'm taking recommendations/requests.

Woo... cool, I am currently staying in Radisson too (assuming you are staying in Radission since you are using their shuttle), mainly to keep my parents company eventhough I found an apartment already. Maybe we've passed each other by without knowing 😀

BTW, I am also an incoming M1, gonna be staying in Normandy (1 BR), still currently busy running around town buying stuffs and trying to settle down in the new apartment. I will be showing up at Saz for the preorientation thingy (hopefully I won't be too scatter brained by then and forget everything about it :scared: ) Anyhoos, hope to see you all there~

Any tips on what to wear for orientation and the White Coat Ceremony? Thanks guys!

You can pretty much wear anything for orientation...jeans, shorts, tshirt ect. For the ceremony its gotta be a shirt and tie for the guys and something along the same line for the ladies.. dressy shirt, skirt or black pants

Yeah, and there's LOTS of time between the two things. Like time to go get lunch, get changed, etc.

I wore a suit for the white coat ceremony. My interview suit b/c it's the only suit I own. It was sooo freakin' hot that day too.

Marc, I'll share OSIG airheads with you, if share some SEMA candy with me. 😉

It's cooler in Arizona right now than it is in Milwaukee! And I'm getting awesome Mexican food.

Is anyone planning on going to the Lakefront picnic tomorrow. I was thinking about going and was wondering if I would see any SDNers there.

opmed said:

I can't make it--I'm going to Madison to have lunch with a friend from my librarian days (which were just a month or so ago! Sheesh!). But I'm going to Saz's tonight, if that helps at all.

I think I remember someone in this thread asking about AT&T DSL vs. Time Warner. This is what I found out when I called each service:

AT&T (Wisconsin # 888-866-3546)
Speed: Pro (1.5 to 3.0 Mbps) - speed depends on distance from central office...call to find out

Prices:
1) $17.99/month for the first year then $34.99/month thereafter
2) $79.99 (not including $50 mail-in rebate) Wireless Gateway (replaces wireless router): has one wired ethernet connection and 802.11b/g wireless

Free activation and free self-install (I did this at home, and it is really easy)

Local phone service is required and costs $17.00 for the bare minimum.

Basic cable TV costs $46.10/month with a $30 installation. So, total cost for DSL is $81/month for the first year and then $98 thereafter.

The only wait is getting the local phone service set up. This usually takes less than 1-week.

--------------

Time Warner (866-676-2200)
Speed: up to 5 Mbps

Prices:
Option 1) Basic cable/Internet package: $82.99/month for first year then $98.00 thereafter.
Option 2) Digital cable/Internet package: $89.99/month for first year then $105 thereafter

Installation costs $39.95 if ordering basic cable package and $7.95 if ordering digital cable package.

Installation is usually done within a week and weekend installations are sometimes available.

So, total cost for basic cable/Internet package is $83/month for the first year and then $98/month thereafter.

-----------

Both the DSL and cable Internet have a few one-time costs. The DSL has the Wireless Gateway and $30 TV installation which amounts to $60 extra dollars spread over the cost of the year. The cable has a $52 wireless router and $30 TV install. If these one-time costs are calculated on a monthly basis for the first year, then the DSL and basic cable costs $86/month, while the Time Warner package costs $90/month. So, savings for the first year with DSL amount to approximately $48. Prices are the same the second year after the one-time costs have been paid for.

The choice is now between having a guaranteed speed and backup local phone service or having up to 5 Mbps (vs. 3) with Time Warner. However, if you already use the local phone service (I just use my cell phone...), then you wouldn't have to pay another $17/month...DSL can "piggyback" on top of the same line that you use for voice.

I'm still deciding on what service to choose...I thought there would be more of a difference.

I hope this helps someone. 😀 I must have been bored...this is how I spent my Friday night. 🙁

No actually, Mike sent an email last week saying to dress up for orientation, at least on the first day.

I got the same thing: "Dress professional, but casual. Slacks/skirt and soft shirt/blouse is fine. It will probably get more casual after the first few days of orientation."

You 2009 guys must have screwed something up for us when you had orientation last year. ;-)

Funny story: I went to Saz's tonight with some friends. Samenewme, I'm almost positive I walked in at the same time as you. I was wearing a turquoise t-shirt.

Hope you all have fun this week... I'll be around on Monday at lunch, since I have emergency med lectures during the day. I'll be in the cafeteria, probably in the northwest corner, since that's where I normally sit. (I'm 5'2", brown hair, and really, really loud. You'll hear me from across the room if I'm talking). Feel free to come find me.

I wonder if they just want you to look pretty for all of the annoying speeches about how great we all are and how we're being held to a higher standard than the rest of the public and blah blah blah.

Take some coffee. Gonna be a long day.

Also, paint a pair of eyes on your eyelids so it looks like they're open when they're actually closed.

Or take a sudoku book, or crossword puzzles.

For orientation, everyone dressed up nicely the first day, then on the day we had our pics taken. After that people started wearing not as nice stuff... I think I wore shorts and t-shirts, but then I froze in Kerrigan, so you may want to keep a sweat shirt with you.
