MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Look at it this way. You could always finish off the MD, skip the boards and residency, and spend the rest of your career writing poetry and short stories about the doctor-patient relationship that you never really experienced. Then you could take the show on the road and lecture at all of the Ivy League med schools.

And with my last grade on my psych write up it proves I can write. hehe. Well worth the 4 excrutiatingly painful hours I put into that thing. Ummm... I'm kinda wondering if those stories are going to be on the ethics exam. I was kinda expecting the Dr-pt relationship to be like "don't do inappropriate things with your patients." Like recommending those people with large fatty streaks to go to the Mars Cheese Castle or whatever.

1. What color were Cardinal Jackson's eyes?

A). Yellow
B). Pterygopalatine Fossa
C). Sleeping with Patients
D). A and C are correct, but B is correct during leap years
E). A and C are incorrect, but B is correct on days ending in "Y"
F). 170 osmoles
G). Green
H). D and E are correct, but H is incorrect

Oops...actually that was me in my Halloween costume. Sorry for the confusion, and for the hauntingly short glimpse you got of my very long, very gorgeous legs.

You must have been dressed as Prowler's OTHER wife. The one I saw had blue jeans on. What color is your wig? Maybe I saw you, too.

And a Snuffleupagus. I definitely saw a Snuffleupagus.

Back to the wonderful world of HEME!

Oh, if they put a really obvious answered question on that test about direct/indirect bilirubin jaundice or something like that as a diagnosis, they aren't tricking you. It really was an easy question that lots of people missed.

Medical Ethics Midterm Exam--Rough Draft (continued)

2). You are a medical student rotating through the MICU at County General Hospital. An elderly African-American woman, Mrs. Jackson, is transported to the MICU via ambulance suffering from dyspnea. Her respiratory rate is 36, blood pressure is 110/70, pulse 80. Upon physical exam you discern rales during inspiration, cyanotic changes in the nailbed, and a galloping S4. Her cough is productive with a greenish exudate that, upon culturing, contains a bacterial strain that is alpha-hemolytic on blood agar. After following her admission and presenting the case to your scholarly attending physician, he turns to you and says, "You took the medical history last night, my young M3 colleague. What color are Mrs. Jackson's eyes?" You reply:

A). I wasn't even supposed to be here today.
B). Green with a late sequelae of glomerulonephritis.
C). Cyan, just like Orlando Bloom's.
D). According to a recent article in NEJM (you hand attending a copy warm off the printer) a controlled, prospective, double-blind study found that her eyes are cloudy grey due to gonarrhea.
E). I quit. I'm going to law school.

I'm tired of those tiny, soggy, crappy Subway subs with no toppings or condiments on them. Someone brought in Jimmy John's once last year, and that was awesome.

AMSA does the M3 post-boards/pre-rotations lunch. It's supposed to be a decent lunch, so we got Jimmy John's. The subs alone were $340. Add pop and chips to that. Mighty pricey. And SA had only budgeted us $200 for this past year, so AMSA had to eat some of the cost. Luckily there's a bit more budgeted for this coming year.

Orlando Bloom's eyes are only that color in LOTRs. Otherwise, his eyes are plain brown in comparison to Cardinal Jackson's eyes that alternate between brown, green, greeny-brown, whatever Dr. Schiedermeyer feels like saying at the moment.

And yep 4 hours to write the stupid 5 page psych write up. I haven't figured out the cut and paste way to do it yet, except for "patient is oriented to person, place and time." I think that was the only thing I copied, aside from the headings.

I have now seen the Prowler's wife. Apparently she is real, and also totally gorgeous, which begs the question of why he was asking for links to a MySpace profile of cleavage.

...or maybe she's NOT real and I've just been studying too long and imagined her. She does seem to be gone now.
what were you smoking over there? geez. I didn't see anybody come visit me.

haha, you said "taint"

Bob, your moustache is tickling me,
down there.
You know, that's my perineum.

(*)
Well, technically it's known as the perineum
but I like to call it, your taint.

(@)
Taint? Why do you call it that?

(*)
Let me explain, honey.

There's a little spot
every woman's got
between her cooter and her tushy.
It's the patch of skin
that sits right in
between your booty and your bushy.
It's just a notch
below your crotch
and your derriere's behind it.
In between the pink
and the stink
that's where you're gonna find it.

Everybody sing!

Some are big,
some are small,
some are hairy,
some are the meat.
Taint your heiny.
Taint your vaginy.
That's why we call it taint.

Now it's my turn.

There's a little spot
every fella's got
between his pecker and his rectum.
It's not your meat,
it's not your seat,
it's only there to connect 'em.
If you wanna glace
just drop your pants
it's hiding under your nutsack.
It's rarely seen
and it's rarely clean
because it's next to your buttcrack.

Come on, girls!

I just got a call from The Puma Man. he was wondering if he could come out and play on Friday.

and for thanksgiving this year I will simply be thankful that today's CER lecturer did not identify ME as the "crotch" guy.

Those skinny ankle jeans are terrible. What is with guys walking around with their polo collars straight up? People did that 4 years ago back home.

It is almost friday.

what does CER stand for?

That Dharma is one crazy character!

How long before it snows again?

Did anyone catch the remake of the Shining?

Boy this party sure died.

I'm worried about the condition of my fibrous pericardium. Are there any pills I can take to make it better?

I just saw an advertisement for Mucinex that personifies mucous. How am I supposed to blow my nose when there is a single father trying to raise his chubby little son in my sinuses?

Wow, you're just full of questions this morning, eh Indo?

CER = Clinical Examination and Reasoning. Essentially a physical diagnosis course.

Saw my first flurries this morning...hopefully we get some real snow soon!

Splat and I were discussing this a little last night. Study music. What does everyone listen to when they finally decide that being a medical student should entail at least a little studying?

Personally, lately I've been listening to a little Sufjan Stevens, Mogwai (instrumental "post-rock" band), Queens of the Stone Age, Beck, The Killers (whose latest album is sadly underwhelming), and of course Black Sabbath. Then again, during 1st block I listened exclusively to classical music, so I guess I'm all over the place.

Beatles, Reel Big Fish, Aquabats, Coldplay, Switchfoot, Lostprophets, MxPx, John Denver, Jimmy Eat World, Incubus, Killers (only have the first album), Snow Patrol and Die ärtze (german punk)... basically I look for stuff on my iRiver with sections where I won't have to change it too often. Beatles has the largest selection, and when I go to the genres... generally punk and ska. I used to study to classical, but now it'd just put me to sleep.

Studying?...hmmm...not familiar.

Anyhoo, I'm about the same. My usual rock type stuff. And now that I have XP on my computer now, and could upgrade my windows media player and can finally listen to radio online. I really missed my old radio station, and haven't got one quite the same here. And Pantera usually does the trick too.

However, if I start paying attention more to the words of the songs rather than what I'm reading, I'll switch to classical.

Or I'll just leave the TV on.

Y'all should road trip on over to Madison Saturday to hear our med school band, the Arrhythmias, play at the State. I'll be the immense dude playing the keyboards.

Hmmm...I'll actually be in Madison on Sat. My brother's a freshman there, and my mom and I are going to the Badger game. I'll mention it to them.

Our band is called Gyrase -- I'm the not prototypical (aka shy) trumpet player)
We've been trying to recruit a horn section, but nada so far. I'm worried about continuity since we're all M2s. Tell me it wouldn't be awesome to set up a double gig with Gyrase and the Arrhythmias. Maybe a friendly competition? Encourage inter-school social contact and public drunkeness?

Our band is called Gyrase -- I'm the not prototypical (aka shy) trumpet player.

I was the bass guitarist in a band during my undergrad days. Had a blast playing house parties, our campus' spring party, and a battle of the bands. We even recorded a demo in a closet in my apartment, produced it, and distributed it ourselves to friends and family, all at a slight monetary loss. 🙂

Then I came to med school. I haven't touched my poor bass guitar in probably 18 months.

Should be an exciting game. I traded away my ticket so I could take my dad to the Illinois game. Have a great time, and seriously consider coming to the show. There will certainly be plenty of med students there, for what that's worth. 9:30, State Bar and Grill on State Street.

That Illinois game was a bit nervewracking compared to the others this season. Just a bit. Yeah, this one should be good. I'm excited...but not for the cold temp. it'll be.

I don't think we have any evening plans yet so I'll ask for sure. And my brother shouldn't have a problem getting into a bar cuz my mom is with (he's only 19).

Just a heads-up to the M2s in the thread. The Acute MI lecturer yesterday was asked by some random student whether we would need to know how to read EKGs for the exam. On the mp3 recording his answer was taped, and it went: "Just do yourself a favor and read the old exam questions. Spread that around to the rest of the class."

I was not that student, but consider the word spread. 😉

I was told that my identity has been betrayed.

well, the person who told me who you were said your name then pointed down the lab to where your cadaver is.
You weren't in the lab so it really didn't help.

I like classical music that is heavy in violin or cello. I can't handle all the gongs and trumpets and all that. Just something soft with no words. I sometimes listen to that downtempo techno electronic stuff. I don't even know what it is called. The key is for there to be no words.

I also listen to the adam carolla radio show on podcast. funnay!

if you like Bach I have a good Bach violin sonata and partitas solo CD. if you're nice I might even copy it for you.

probably Bush's illegal wiretapping.

Legal? I will make it legal.
