MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

I highly doubt the news/obit would discuss her being found in a hot tub dead, nor include accounts from those present at her autopsy.
The Journal Sentinel mentioned in the Metro section a 72-year old woman found dead at the WAC in the sauna, I believe.

I stand corrected on that point, but I still feel the detail discussed here was inappropriate, especially since some of us apparently had connections to the "case," and that's my final answer.

Anybody had experience with the Lange pharmacology text? Don? Xandie? I flipped through it briefly and it seemed to be useful, but my credit card isn't as pumped about it as I am yet.

oh, Xandie, were you wearing pink under your white coat today and walking through our hallways around 9am?

I was all jacked up on Mt. Dew when I made my MCW fly-by yesterday and was all set to pick up Lippincott's Pharm review book at the bookstore until I realized that they had zero copies of the book. When asked they said, "we've ordered like three of them, but there are a lot of people asking about them, so write down your name and number if you want a shot at getting them." Yeah, real smart. I'll buy Amazon, thank ya very little.

Oh, and what's the deal with them neglecting to get more copies of the First Aid: Cases and First Aid: Q&A books? Don't they realize that they could be selling a book called "Guide to Kidney Punches" and as long as the First Aid people were putting it out med students would buy it in droves?

They have to make room for books on medical assisting.

My student loan check bounced. WTF?

I didn't use any text for the pharm course, although I did often read the drug monograph from goodman and gilman on Access Medicine (via the library proxy, so it's free) In fact, I just looked, and the Lange book is there too.

I relied on class notes, vigorous note taking, note cards, and the occasional co-op. And old exams, as always.

Can anyone think of a reason why my student loan check bounced?

whoa! from the school? I'd be FUBAR'd if my check bounced, because I've already spent a big chunk of it.

on a side note, I accidentally woke up at 12:30 today. Good thing I wasn't planning on going to class really....but I was planning on having a little more study time....

I had a dream about you last night, kiddo. Apparently Ashers and I were in some med interviewing group and we had to interview you as a standardized patient for an OSCE type thing. The horrible part was that I had to do the whole fake introducing thing which meant me being the first to say something between us in person.

I hate having nightmares 🙁

A) Pharm books? What are those? I used the notes... and that was it. Good times.

B) Somewhat unshockingly, no... I was wearing pink yesterday (and brown today, just so we all know). But at 9 am I was sitting in rounds, trying desperately not to fall asleep. However, if you were to see me, I would probably look something like this (without the sunglasses on my head):

As of right now I am absolutely screwed. I've paid rent, bought books, and bought groceries because I thought the check went through 10 days ago when I deposited it. But, my bank held the check because I made the mistake of depositing it via my ATM machine. So I'm at -600 dollars. Then today I find out that the check bounced. Monday banks are closed.

How long does it take to get a letter of rec from the dean? What is the point of the dean's letter after 1 term in med school?

I don't think you'll be getting a letter of recommendation from the dean anytime soon unless you specifically requested one for some reason. I think I know what you're talking about, though. What you'll get very soon is your official grade sheet back from each course, with comments from the course director on them. Most of the comments will be cookie-cutter "showed mastery of the course material" type comments. Those comments are used in creating your dean's letter at the beginning of 4th year, where they apparently just stick most of the comments from your class grades in the letter verbatim.

Well, I was going to apply for a research position with the American Society of Anesthesiologist that requires a letter of rec from the dean but I don't think I can put that together in time for the deadline.

On a side note, I was watching some dumb diet pill commercial and noticed that there seems to be an abundance of D.O. graduates doing infomercials and such. Will I have this opportunity?

Ohh, I see. Disregard that previous post, then. Were you applying for the FAER program? That scholarship is nice, but you can organize something through the anesthesiology dept. no problem and probably get the same money for it. The good/bad thing about the FAER program (depending on your point of view) is that they want you to do the program at a school away from your home institution. That would be nice if you were going to do it back in Oregon, but would be a pain in the ass if you had to move someplace else for the summer.

Yep, the FAER program. It seemed pretty cool but I didn't realize that I couldn't pick the location. We're supposed to have our research mentor or preceptor or whatever lined up and finalized by monday but I suppose I could still email some people and see what spots are left. Otherwise, it is back to Oregon and back to asphalt work for me.

One of the students from MCW who did FAER last summer was able to stay at MCW to do his research. He has a wife and a small child, so I believe he used those extenuating circumstances to talk the FAER people into letting him stay in town. I can PM you his name if you want to e-mail him to ask about FAER.

I had friends in high school who did asphalt work every summer. They were always ultra-tan from working in the sun all day, and they always smelled like tar (which covered up the scent of weed nicely for them).

I just had a minor freakout and had to check my bank account. No problems here on the financial aid front. That has gotta be one of the oddest things I've ever heard. So I wonder if the school is gonna reimburse you for all the fees...

I have the 10th edition of Goodman and Gilman's text if anyone wants to take a look at what the devil looks like when he appears on earth in the form of a textbook. I have it from undergrad pharm. I attempt to read it some, but then I want to shoot myself.

I haven't heard about any pharm review books as being good. I did just order a crapload of stuff from Barnes and Noble the other day. I threw in the Katzung review book that I think correlates with the Lange text. So we'll see if it's worth anything. If not, I'll return it. I'm getting it on Monday or Tuesday.

haha, my wife and I noticed that. Like I'm really going to think that if a D.O. resident says so, IT MUST BE TRUE! How about a physician with a few decades of experience?

that really sucks about your check though. That's why I decided to deposit it right at my bank, instead of in the ATM.

personally i put my faith in Kevin Trudeau. He knows EVERYTHING.

When you read as fast as I do Kevin Trudeau looks like Kevin Federline. Yikes.

Oh, I forgot, about the ATM thing... at my bank, if you deposit a check, it's like 5 business days until the funds are available, but if you deposit a check at an ATM, the funds are available immediately. Hhmmm.

The other thing I've done before is to cash the check, then turn around and deposit the cash.

Okay, back to talking about infomercials. The general public doesn't realize that the guy just graduated. Just that he's a doctor, so he must know the secret to weight loss.

I just always figured if it was on TV in a commercial it must be true. People would lie in commercials? Why would they lie to me? =(

When you deposit a check for 4500 dollars they'll hold the funds for a period but you can withdraw a little bit immediately.

I'm an accepted student for 2011. I was looking at the budget and noticed that they only give you $1500 for 10 months or $150 per month. This equates to $37 a week. Is this enough??

um, that's not including everything. You get at least $500/month for rent. Look a little deeper. I couldn't find my sheet with the budget breakdown on it, otherwise I'd give you the numbers.

I think when I did the math a long time ago that it comes out to like $1100/month to live off of. I think I subtracted the supplies budget out first.

And no, for me, it's not enough. But partly because I choose to live by myself as a 25-year old, and they do the budget for having a roommate. But the financial aid office is run by assclowns who don't care.

One of the major budget lists is actually per month, so you may be looking at that.

You can live pretty decently if you have a roommate, buy cheap groceries, don't buy food at the cafeteria, and have a car that is already paid for.

In undergrad, a physiology prof. told a story of a person who killed herself by putting her mouth on the shower head and just drinking and drinking and drinking. I thought that it must've been an urban legend because surely (not shirley) you'd vomit after too much water. Check this out:

Woman Dies Following Radio Contest
Water Drinking Contest Results In Water Intoxication

SACRAMENTO -- A 28-year-old woman found dead hours after taking part in a radio station's water drinking contest died of water intoxication, the coroner's office said Saturday.

Assistant Sacramento County Coroner Ed Smith said a preliminary investigation found evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death."

Jennifer Strange's mother found her daughter's body at her home Friday in the Sacramento suburb of Rancho Cordova after Strange called her supervisor at her job to say she was heading home in terrible pain.

"She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad," said Laura Rios, one of Strange's co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. "She was crying and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."

Earlier Friday, Strange took part in a contest at radio station KDND 107.9 in which participants competed to see how much water they could drink without going to the bathroom.

Initially, contestants were handed eight-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.

"They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy," said fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland. "They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk."

Ybarra said he quit after drinking five bottles. "My bladder couldn't handle it anymore," he added.

After he quit, he said, the remaining contestants, including Strange, were given even bigger bottles to drink.

"I was talking to her and she was a nice lady," Ybarra said. "She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for kids."

The winner of the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest was promised a Nintendo Wii video game system.

John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station's owner, said station personnel were stunned when they heard of Strange's death.

"We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred," Geary said.

So hyponatremia, then? Some athletes have gotten it, too.

So hyponatremia, then? Some athletes have gotten it, too.

Pretty much. That's why we feed athletes gatorade instead. Some runners get themselves in trouble because they think the more water the better, so they chug and chug and chug. Not good.

Anything is a poison; it just depends on the dose. I'm curious how much she drank.

I think if you tell them that you need it asap for a summer reasearch position they will do everything they can to get it to you.

And the clearance and if it is a zero or first order kinetic 😛

What has Pratik been studying today?

Now I'm procrastinating by trying to figure out which track I want next year and when i want to take boards (and by "want" I mean, when I'm going to... I don't really want to take them).

Ahh, thanks!

I wonder if a letter of recommendation from my roommate would be alright for the 2nd letter. haha. I'm going to find out.

Pratik, you've been studying today? You nerd.

(I'm posting from a computer in the 8th floor resident's room at Children's... weekend call is good for the soul).

I've barely been able to study since Friday - I had the M1 reception, a graduation of sorts yesterday for my cousin (followed by dinner), and a memorial service for my grandpa today (followed by dinner). Saw a lot of loved ones, but I feel really behind....

aww... sorry. =(

I've studied this weekend, gone through pharm stuff a couple of times. Way behind on path. I also found out today my youngest brother broke his clavicle snowboarding (so now my mom will never want me to go ever again in my life). My family is cursed with orthopaedic injuries.

I don't like snow. boo!

if not maybe your mentor can write you one. And if all else fails, i will write you one...

"I would like to recommend Indo for a research position. You should see what this kid can do with a micropipet. In addition, this one time at summer research camp, he ranked at the top of his class for mLs of tequilla chugged out of a beaker...it was hella cool. Should rank highly in the anesthetic gas inhalation event"

sophomore pharmacology students: did I miss the day they actually taught us how to do the useless waste of time crap in this pre-test which will surely be on the real test?

no wonder I hate med school.

I fear for your patients if that's the kind of attitude you have towards academic challenges. You should relish the opportunity to utilize your knowledge in novel ways by solving problems that are clinically relevant. Do us all a favor and give up now.
