MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Cool, thanks for the help!

Sometimes I like listening to new albums when I study. Apparently listening to Dr. MacDoo's "Under the Kilt" album is not a good idea. I obviously can't concentrate on path while listening to a Swede sing with a Scottish accent to techno.

Do you speak Swedish?

Ah, I've been had.

So the apartment is NOT the one above Noodles. It's a block up, above the flower place. I'm thinking that for $700, they must've remodeled the inside of that old, old building, so I go and take a look today. I'm so disappointed. The wood floors throughout creak and have worn, black areas everywhere. The kitchen is all around a piece of crap. There's ~1.5 feet of counter space. No dishwasher. The bedroom's okay, but kinda small. Small, dingy closet. The bathroom has the old one faucet for hot and another faucet for cold.

On the plus side, it's month-to-month and has a neat looking faux fireplace, and the dining room, living room is big.

Sucks.

I went and inspected the sign for the one above Noodles more closely - it's for a 2-bedroom. And apparently owned by the people that own the Overlook, cuz that's the phone number.

So now I gotta figure out if I want to keep looking right now, or tell the person that's coming to look at my place this week that it's a no go.

I should probably go study.

small closets suck. I'm gonna have a massive walk-in closet someday.

I have a decent sized walk-in (probably 5'x10)', but it has been mostly commandeered by my wife. If I had enough clothes to put up a fight, I would, but I just can't justify hanging up my T-Shirts!

Sorry to hear about your disappointment. It sounds like the apartment Gods are telling you to give up. Do you really want to have to deal with moving all your stuff right now, anyway?

Very true. Moving right now would suck big time. #1 - school. #2 - my building is well off the parking lot, and so I'd have to trudge everything through the snow. Thanks for pointing that out Andy.

I saw the faux fireplace right when walking in...I'm thinking it's pretty good at this point.

Then I saw the bathroom...then I saw the kitchen...

Then I gave up on that one. Why the hell would anyone pay $700/month for THAT.

There are a couple other places I could look at. I really do need to decrease my rent. I basically have til Tuesday morning to decide.

uh...guys. for REAL men...your "walk in closet" should be your floor.

cripes. I swear we have about 3 extra pairs of boobs in here suddenly.

...i just realized how dry my hands are...where did I put my citrus herb bath and body works lotion?

And for some reason lotion is always a fall-back for christmas presents. Therefore, I have an entire box full of lotions, and some probably date back a few years.

Ah yes, vintage lotion...I have a nice '95 Aveeno Continuous Radiance that I waiting for a special occasion to crack open.

You may get a special surprise from that one. Aveeno Fermented Radiance. 😉

I didn't know lotoins went bad until I was at a friend's house, and they had sample sized stuff in the guest bathroom (really cool idea -- hotel-esque), and this one lotion that sounded like it was going to smell great was all funky and weird.

ewww. maybe i should go through mine and toss some. i'm not very good at throwing stuff out sometimes though. although i'm much better at that than my mom. she's one of the worst pack-rats i know.

Same here. My mom got mad at me when she saw my collection of lotions. I've had some for 5 years before and they're still good. I think the one that went off had to have been stored in suboptimal conditions and it was old.

My grandma is the worst packrat I know. I had to take stuff from her house when I was in Illinois, basically so she'd get rid of it -- she'll give me a few things that she can part with, as long as she thinks I like them and will use them. I need to throw some of the stuff she gave me away or do something with it. One's a weird picture of bamboo or something, and another's a windchime. Just what I need.

Wow, wild saturday night for you guys.

me too...i never seem to have enough room for my 5 pairs of pants
I've got 3 pairs of jeans, two pairs of khakis (one pair is 6 years old 😛), and the pants that I borrow from my one suit (wore it to my interview and the Black Bag Ball). It's the shirts that I have more of....and I just like having enough room to see my clothes without having to slide them all around. I do have a fair number of shoes though, but you wouldn't know it by my near-daily selection of my black Merrells 😛

I've yet to see anyone who can beat my grandma at pack-ratting. My dad said that when she kicks it we're just gonna rent a big dumpster and park it outside the windows of her house so we can toss stuff out in piles.

more boobs? can I touch them? 😀

went out last night, and the wife is already asleep, I'm in the mood to fight Nazis, and we're trying to save money, so......

Well I'm sitting on the sofa, naked, eating cheetohs.

see what mcw.edu looked like years ago...lots of the links don't work, but you'll see a few.

man...the internet was ugly back in the day. http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.mcw.edu

just click one of the dates to see what it looked like.

studying hard, I see.

I'm not really one to talk though. I went out tonight over on the East side. One of my old friends from La Crosse was in town. So I promised I'd go out for a couple hours. And then of course, I needed a gyro at Mykonos. So I just got home. I think I'm gonna study for an hour, then go to bed. Not sleepy yet.

How much material is going to stick at 3:55am after you've been inhaling smoke fumes all night?

In 1997, the MCW website had sideburns and a leisure suit!

I just saw an advertisement for Chili's and now I'm hungry. Damn you marketing!

FYI for anyone thinking of getting tickets for "Wicked" in Chicago through Physicians for the Arts: The show is awesome, and I would definitely recommend seeing it, but bring binoculars if you get the cheap tickets from PFA, because they seat you pretty much as far back in the theater as possible.

Ah, you'd be amazed.

I only had 3 beers, then had mykonos, so I was wide awake. And so was my dog when I got home. Besides, I'm used to being up til 4 or so, remember.

I just want to point out that it's a great day to go snowboarding, and I have to study.

How far away is granite peak? What kind of elevation are these venues at?

edit: Found their website

700 verticle feet? This mountain would have a housing development on it at home. haha.

They have 74 runs so I guess you could spend a day there.

You'll break your leg out there, kid.

Just because my brother's having surgery on his clavicle tomorrow because of a snowboarding accident + car accident doesn't mean I'm going to break anything.

Indo, if you look at their trail map, some of their "runs" are connections between bigger runs. Nothing compared to "out west" as Prowler just called it.

I guess you haven't noticed yet, but we're in the midwest. You take what you can get. There are no mountains, just hills.

That is what I thought. People are making fun of oregon drivers because of that video of the car sliding sideways and pinballing off other vehicles but in the midwest they build ski resorts on hills that we build housing developments and streets on.

How did block 5, or block one of physiology and all that, go for you all last year? I feel like I have a decent grip on the material but I don't want to get blindsided.

Block 1 -- it was an anomaly for me. I was honoring the old exams, then I didn't sleep before the test (seriously), and I misread SO may questions. It was my worst test in phys, but I understood everything pretty well.

Block 5, the final? -- honored.

I was honoring phys by a pretty decent margin. Then we got to respiratory. I thought I knew the stuff, but couldn't get it right on the test. So I low high passed that block, and high passed the final. So even though I honored the other three block exams, I ended up with a high pass in the class. Damn you Dr. Foster. (that was his name, right?)

The first phys exam last year was probably one of the more frustrating non-final experiences I've had in med school. I ended up doing well on it after they threw out bad questions, but I was amazed at how convoluted and frustrating they were able to make the questions. Turns out, that's just the way physiology is. Pretty sure it was my lowest score in that class.

My advice: prepare and prepare some more. Know the notes inside out and take all of the old exams you can.

Wasn't it Forester? "The cooling of the medulla leads to apnea in the anesthetized goat" (it may not be the medulla) He does talk with a great accent -- especially when Marty and Cameron mimic it.

I couldn't stand lung phys. My worst test was still Block 1 with Block 4 being a close 2nd.

block 1 phys was my best...honored that bitch...but it was all downhill from there. i woulda nearly aced the kidney/GI exam if it weren't for the terrible questions the GI guy wrote.
