MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are you guys really happy at MCW? how come you guys find the time to post on sdn 24hrs...since it is a general mantra that medical school is tough. just curious about how you guys survive!

Well, we take a lot of breaks on the computer and we don't all post at the same time. We take shifts. 😉

I am happy here and I'm surviving okay. I'm not studying 24/7, and I don't pull all-nighters before exams, and I don't give up showering in exam week (how much time does it save, really?) and I spend more time on the Net than I should. But I'm somewhere in the middle of the pack and I'm doing okay.

I echo what samenewme says. While we might bitch from time to time about school, that's mostly the burnout from so much studying talking. I doubt anyone on here actually thinks they would be any happier at another school, unless they want to be closer to home for any OOSers.

Are you a soccer fan? Your username has me wondering.

I find time to post all the time because I'm actually listening to lectures on my computer and sometimes the lecturers dwell on things I don't need dwelt.

The only time there isn't much free time is around exams when you use every waking moment to cram.

Well, no, I was in kindergarten then. Wait a minute, how old are you?

25. My mom graduated from high school in 1969. "best class ever" she said. haha.

except me. most days I still regret not at least taking a year off to try paramedic school first.

I'm glad you didn't 😍

Me too! Who else could I complain to in pharm?

My mom graduated from high school in '69. Indo, I thought you were younger.

As for med school being hard and being on SDN, my hardest class ever was German Foreign Policy Since the Second World War (auf Deutsch). (Hard being defined as lots of time put in with little results) It was my worse grade in college. At least med school is mostly in English, though the first part of it is hard learning medical-ese. SDN is for study breaks, or when I don't feel like studying (which is a lot recently).

I gotta say, as someone who spends the SA money and organizes stuff, I'm feeling attacked right now. If you don't attend the events, it's your own damn fault for not getting anything out of the activity fee.

And really, what's an extra $20 increase. I don't think it's gonna put me over the edge on my >$200,000 debt.

Everyone bitches that everything sucks, but it takes money to do stuff. And it takes a lot of money to do it well.

I'm certainly not intending to attack you or any of the other organization leaders, I just think it's the wrong path to go down for the long-term. Instituting an additional fee (which I thought was more in the range of $60-80/year per student) is only a temporary solution for the rising costs of the lunches and events the organizations put on. This might be just peachy if school didn't cost us $200,000 as you pointed out, but at the end of the day each student really should have a choice what their priorities are.

I'm already dumbfounded that MCW has raised tuition on us by at least $2500-3000 over the course of our two years here (after already being one of the more expensive schools in the country) and am simply fed up by all of the additional costs that are being tossed on our shoulders. A "mandatory" diagnostic kit? $400. Step 1 fees? $475. Tuition during our next two years when we will essentially be doing work for the hospitals? $80,000. You get my point.

I need to look out for my family's long-term financial security, and while it may not seem like $60-80 for student clubs is much, one must draw a line in the sand and stand on principle at some point. I see that many of these events are attended by a minority of the students and while they may lead to a greater MCW "culture" are perhaps of questionable educational value. So why not charge people to attend them like the Black Bag Ball or the bar parties clubs throw downtown? Do lunch meetings necessarily need food to bring students in, and if food is the only reason they're there, is it really worth it?

Again, I'm certainly not trying to attack you at all. I can see where you're coming from in this, and obviously greater than 50% of the students agree with you. I simply wanted to let you know why I am more than a little bitter about my lack of control in where my student loan money is going, because at the end of the day I'll probably be living pretty meager for at least 5-10 years out of residency to pay it off. I've already eliminated several specialties from my consideration due to the financial constraints our tuition etc. will be placing on my family. Just ridiculous.

I'm telling ya...you've got a camera and a sense of humor, I've got Ben Affleck looks...

We could sellout. Big time.

Come to the couches early on Monday. 😉

I'll see what I can do. If not Monday, then definitely the following Monday before the Pharm exam. You know, when I actually get to take the test at the same time as other people I know.

Your group is taking path first. I, however, am just compulsive at get to school around 630 on exam days... doesn't mean the video camera will be there. I'm no in control of that.

it will be there, along with it's new, improved shotgun microphone on the active interface shoe. and I will probably be there at 6am or earlier.

That may have been the year Rubber Duckie was a top-40 hit. I remember singing it in the car with my older sisters. It was on WTIX, back when cars only had AM radios.

I meant that it's going up $20 from $45 to $65. The vote also included a way to increase the fee periodically, but I don't remember exactly how.

I agree, I have no idea why they need to raise tuition all the time. But I guess I don't mind as much because it happens no matter what school you go to. And this school was actually the cheapest school I applied to besides Madison. And the kit, step 1 fees, tuition in 3rd and 4th years, are everywhere. But yeah, I see your point. It sucks.

I totally understand why you want to limit your debt, and I don't think there's too many people who would argue against that. Even though the meetings are attended by a minority (which is sad), most are intended to be educational (i.e. interest groups). Other stuff is meant to make life more enjoyable. We do charge for Black Bag Ball. We charged $28 this year, which is already tough from a selling stand-point, but we did manage to sell 260 tickets this year. However, the Ball costs ~$15,000 to put on. If we solely used ticket sales, tickets would be ~$60, which isn't gonna fly. The Halloween party, yes, purely for fun, but they charged $10, which funded most of it. The finals party was $10 and purely charitable.

Again, I understand that you want to minimize your debt. We all do. But I think you'd be hard pressed to find another school that doesn't charge you these kinds of fees. The lack of control is irritating, but the debt was something I knew and accepted long ago. So I'm just trying to make the best of it and enjoy all the extras - educational or not.

We'll just agree to disagree...friends? 🙂

My parents graduated from high school in 1979. 😀 But I'm 25 too.

Wow, your parents are young. My dad graduated from high school in 1964. I'm 26 though. My parents waited til my dad was done with residency to start having kids, now they're like "We're too old and tired to care, which is why your youngest brother gets away with everything."

Damn right. 😉

Yeah! 😀

Ashleigh, my mom was 20 when she had me, then had 3 more by the time she was 29. I like having a young mom. 🙂 Which is probably why I feel so behind in life right now at 25. All my aunts and uncles are young too. My youngest aunt and uncle are 37. I'm the oldest out of all the grandchildren on both sides of the family. My youngest cousin is almost 4. My grandparents are in their low 70s. My great grandpa will be 101 on Tuesday, and my great grandma will be 100 next month. But their health has been failing quite a bit since this fall when they went into the nursing home. My great grandpa fell getting out of the tractor, so they had to go to a home. 🙁

It's so strange to me when people say that their grandparents are in their 80s. I knew 5/8 great grandparents. One perk of being the oldest in the family.

My family's really spread out. My dad's mom was 40 when she had him, but his half sister is 10 years older than he, so my jacked up cousins on my dad's side are old (one's almost 57, one's about 50, the other one killed herself when i think she was 29 -- 2 paranoid schizophrenics, 1 bipolar). My grandma died when she was almost 94, and my grandpa died before I was even born. My great grandparents on my dad's side were like born in 1876 or something.

My mom's side is younger, my great grandma just died, (she was younger than my dad's mom), my grandma is just about 80, and my youngest cousin is 8 (my mom's sister is 13 years younger than my mom). My mom got married right after she turned 26, so she started bugging me about it. Apparently, I had a great-great grandma alive when I was born, so I technically "met" her, but just like when I saw Return of the Jedi in theatres, I have no recollection of it.

I don't see, though, how 6 years made a big difference for my parents between the rules I had in high school and the rules my brother had in high school.

Tractors are the devil. As I'm sure you know, if you spend any significant amount of time in a rural area you are guaranteed to hear about more than a handful of hospitalizations/deaths due to tractor-related incidents! Unbelievable how dangerous they are...

The baby always gets away with a bunch of crap the rest of us wouldn't have.

Man, you're family is spread out. Confusing. No big gaps here. Once someone in my family has a baby, they pop 'em all out in a row. 😉

My immediate family's all nice and neat -- 2 year intervals 80, 82, 84 and 86. 😉

Well, he is 100 years old too. 🙄

Actually, it's not always the tractors, but all the other equipment that's super dangerous too. Lots of spinning stuff to get stuck in. My great uncle has lost 2.5 fingers, my grandpa just lost half a finger last summer, one uncle has lost half a finger, and another uncle has a bunch of reconstructive metal in his ankle. But the last one was from getting stepped on wrong by a cow.

We might not have as much violence in the rural areas, but there still can be a busy ER.

Yeah, when I go up north to help cut wood for the cabin, we use an attachment on a tractor that is basically a gigantic circular saw blade (about 3.5' diameter). No safety mechanisms or guards whatsoever. It's amazing we still have all our hands.

This is why I restrict myself only to manual labor that a hand model would do.

Back ye demons! I say to you, thread of the Class of 2010...arise and walk a-gain-ah!

Ugh. This is not what I wanted to come home to after a fun ski trip with two of my brothers and my dad. My wife went out drinking with a co-worker last night - just two girls downtown. My wife got kinda tanked, courtesy of free drinks from some random bar dude who didn't realize she was married for the first hour of conversation, and he ended up banging her friend later that night. While my wife was in the other room (at the other girl's house). Some random dude. Real safe. Not to mention, when I asked if she kept her drink with her at all times.....nope. Great. Two girls get roofied and dragged off, while I'm 300 miles away.

G'damn! You, me, 2 katanas, and some shurikens. Just let me know the time. (Yes, I would swallow my pride and actually introduce myself to you if it meant taking care of a greaser like that.)

That sucks, Prowler. Apparently women can't be trusted, oh wait...

So wait, am I the only M2 on here that talks to you?

Meh, if he didn't actually touch the wifey, paid for drinks and was stupid enough not to notice a ring for an hour (I'm kinda pissed that she didn't mention me within an HOUR!), it's his loss. Or gain, if he was actually gaming for the other friend all along.

I talk to akpete too. Just the ladies, I guess.

well, I talk to Joe, Matt, Derrick, and others. Just not the onlines dudez. I almost never see Funk anyways, and Splat has been trying to get with me lately.

My wife has a tendency to get herself into troublesome situations involving alcohol when I'm not around, too. Her favorite thing to do is get super-smashed on exam weekends when I'm studying so I can deal with the consequences after her friends drop her off because she's too drunk and irrational to stay overnight with them. (OK, that's only happened twice.)

Last year she was in Madison the weekend before an anatomy exam, and she actually did get roofied, near as we can tell, at least. She didn't drink very much, but has entire periods of the night that she can't remember. Fortunately, I have voicemails from her during the blackout period from when she was calling me to figure out where she was and to have me come pick her up. I was finally able to get ahold of a friend of hers who happened to be in Madison to go take care of her.

It must have been warm wherever you were skiing.

Nah, it was about 20 degrees. I just have balls of steel. :meanie:

Anyways, I just found out that my brother's girlfriend (prior to them dating, I think), got roofied and taken advantage of by some random guy. And all her friends? Oh, haha, she's drunk, have a good night!

Hopefully this will knock a little sense into my wife.....no harm, no foul, I guess.

Holy crap. These stories make me pretty thankful that my wife doesn't really go out drinking without me (and even then it's kind of hard to get her to go to a bar). I'm pretty sure if some random jerk took advantage of my lady using drugs and alcohol I'd be finding myself going to jail shortly thereafter. 🙁

Well, part of the problem is that she almost never does go out (especially since she went to a Christian college where this kind of thing was strictly forbidden), so it's times like Saturday night where her naivete is obvious.

And I wouldn't go to jail if she got roofied and assaulted. But that's only because they'd never find the body.

And this is why I say it's a "good thing" I started going to the bar when I was 15. I learned the ropes early and can take care of myself. 😎

Of course, a 15-year old was probably the easiest target of all.

I saw you in the newspaper. Nice shades. 😎
