MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
man, some people really half-ass the co-ops they write. I usually try to make them pretty good, so I can actually put my name on that. I had the pulmonary hypertension one last semester, and it was the first time he gave the lecture, the lecture was terrible to follow, the handout was awful, but I figured I'd actually make something that people could study from. I just did the path lecture from today, and the one last year was "Slide 1. blah blah blah. stupid unrelated comment I thought I'd make. blah blah blah. Slide 2."

How about a format that's easy to follow and highlights the relevant information? I hope that the person who does the co-op next year can just use mine with a simple comment or two.

Yeah, personal commentary on coops is rarely entertaining.

a few are slightly amusing, but for the most part, they're dumb. Even worse is when someone writes a ton at the beginning of the co-op, but they don't convey anything useful.

I think even that is better than the people who just put their names at the top of last year's co-ops, without editing or even re-numbering any slides. Those people should be fined, or should have to cook us all a really nice breakfast.

yeah, that's just pathetic. I don't enjoy writing a good co-op, but I know that other people are writing them as well, so I try to pull my weight and make something I'd actually use. I also don't understand how I end up with two copies of one co-op, and then a third co-op of that same lecture that was written by someone else. This isn't rocket surgery, people...

I laughed out loud while listening to a certain, um, you know, um... um. lecture today.

Two favorites (which are loosely paraphrased): One last thing...oh, I guess there are two.

Okay, to finish up...oh, I guess that's the end.

I'm loving my life right now.

here goes my productivity

So what is the word on the streets for scheduling 3rd year clerkships? They told us that nothing matters unless you are having a baby or getting married. Is it better to do the long ones first and be done at christmas break?

It doesn't matter.

It's good to do whatever you're interested in (if it's a third year option) between September and January, IMHO. You need to pick your advisor in Jan/Feb, so it's good to have been in that department before that. You don't want to do it too early, because it's very hard to impress at the beginning.

I second that, although if you have had some exposure to the department through interest groups and whatnot, you might already have a pretty good idea of who could be a good advisor. Although I admit that it would feel pretty damn awesome to have the Big 3 done right now, I still like the way my year has shaped up so far by starting out getting comfortable in a clinical setting by doing the little ones first.

It might feel good to have the big 3 done, but then I'd still have to go through Psych and OB/Gyn. My goal was to get those done early, then I based stuff on when the elective was. I didn't want my elective in December (-1 week -- though CPR was kinda a lame month to have truncated). Then ortho has this thing where they only take 1 M3/month until November, so I wanted my elective in Nov with a better chance of getting ortho.

One of my friends also had my same track with ortho in Nov, so I figured since he got Thanksgiving off 2 years ago, I'd get it off as well. If you have one of the small tracks (minus OB/gyn), you'll probably have a good chance of having Thanksgiving off.

A little secret that not many people talk about is the track with vacation/elective in June.

You are eligible to start your fourth year early, and can get a sub-I out of the way while everyone else is finishing up. This may be especially helpful for the "competitive" surgical sub-i's.

I'm not sure if you could do your medicine sub-i, but I know you can do surgical sub-i's.

dammit!!!!!!! i woulda done that. i'm going to sneak up next to you and tap on the opposite shoulder sometime tomorrow as revenge.

You can definitely do medicine sub-Is. Katie did her peds sub-I in June.

Oh yeah, and that track was my first choice (had OB/GYN in January). At least our year, the big 3 first tracks were very popular.

That was a fun section. If the patients weren't so sick, I'd've considered it.

That's why there's rad onc. The he-monkeys (I guess that would make me a ra-donkey) manage the sick internist stuff and you just see patients in clinic once everything is under control.

This is exactly what I have. Marc, you should pay closer attention to what I do, then you would've had the inside info.

I ranked this track 1st, and was lucky enough to get it. It is in my opinion the best track available if you have an idea of what you want to do for your specialty or if you are planning on doing a specialty covered by the core stuff. You start with medicine, which is a good foundation for the 3rd year. Then surgery, and peds. Then the non-big 3 starts out with ob-gyn and then it's downhill from there.

And being that it may be competitive to get an ortho sub-I, I get to do mine in June. In fact, I already got it scheduled.

Having the big 3 first was very popular choice for the '09 class too. I like it cuz you hit the ground running, then have some lighter rotations before gearing up for sub-Is and aways early in 4th year. But really, it the end, it doesn't matter which track you end up with.

I already have all of the same clothes as you, sheesh. how much closer do I have to get???

What could possibly be cooler than a TBL without arguing?

So how DO you study all these freaking white cell disorders and stinking leukemias and lymphomas? Is there any way to organize it, or is each one a unique and perfect snowflake you must come to appreciate for itself?

here is a graph of my motivation this semester

...whereas I turned into a freaking gunner in the middle of TBL in front of God and everyone.

It's a sphere, people. It's high school geometry.

See? Still a gunner.

That was you? I figured that was a samenewme doppelgänger. I also liked the individual who couldn't resist blurting out that it had something to do with a Na/K ATPase, which wasn't really relevant.

I was reading through the old MCW class of 2011 thread and saw that someone had gotten their offer of admission rescinded in June. This makes me a bit uneasy as to how/why an acceptance can be void. I am still in school and would hate for a subpar grade in a course result in me losing my spot. If anyone knows why that acceptance was rescinded and wouldnt mind sharing a bit of the details please PM me.

Thanks

There's a way to organize it. I made several tables last year and memorized those. I also studied them for step 1.

However, I don't like to send them out because I make mistakes on the computer file and only correct them on the printed copy.

Just remember: Auer Rods.

So, Ashers, what are you headings, then? I'll take headings.

I was possessed.

SPHERE!

I don't know why that happened. Probably just as likely that someone was trolling, although I don't recall the post. They aren't gonna boot you because you got a B- or something, though. Just don't flunk anything and you should be fine.

Agreed. You'll be fine unless you royally screw up. I killed a guy with a trident and I still kept my acceptance.

thought I'd share some CoD4 screenshots with y'all. they look even better than this in the game because these are frozen from a moving shot, so the anti-aliasing and lighting don't look quite right. It'll give you an idea though. 😉

I think somebody needs to join the Army and get his fix of real death and destruction.

pretty sure they don't let everyone have a go at using the AC-130 or Javelin rocket launcher or running covert ops with the SAS. I'll stick with video games.

On OB/GYN, you'll learn that a 35 year old woman is elderly.

old balls. You two are prolly in class right now but 75% of our class chose the same track? That means it is pretty much random now.

Also, for the teacher of the year thing... It should be the award for least bad teaching. We have about 4 instructors who range from okay to awesome and the rest are sub- par.
