MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't see anyone unless they come find me, or I can stick it in your open box when I get back to school May 1. I just need to know your actual name, unless it says "Indo" on your open box.

Look for the box with the pink slips and eviction notices. Thanks! I'll PM you.

Ah, USMLE world to save the day and crush my confidence. Did we even learn some of this stuff? I should just uncheck the biochem box until I've gone through it just a *little* more.

biochem was one of my worst subjects...and yet somehow, when I was doing Qbank, I got most biochem questions right. I'll never figure that one out.

Have you guys started reading materials from the old blocks? i can't even keep up with this block? what's going on

Not in pharm, but I've started going through the tutor notes for Path. That's as deep as I'm going to go in Path.

Yikes: Nutrition, cofactors, glycogen storage. Where is my high yield biochem book?

I'm using RR path for my finals too...except for this block's stuff. Also using UW qbank too.

Any upperclassmen have any thoughts about Raff's pharm lecture? It was a repeat of phys, and entertaining and informative and all, but what exactly is pharm-testable about it? I welcome your input. Or sympathy. Or hearty laughter at my expense.

Basically I just want attention here.

Yeah, that's pretty much my strategy. Not worth going through all the old blocks' material. I might page through all my old notes once or twice (I've got them all in order in two binders) just so I pick up the high yield tidbits that some of these profs are likely to test on again.

Just an FYI:
Starting on or around May 15, 2008, a transition period will begin in which the number of items in current forms of the Step 1 examination will change from 350 items to 336 items. Although the transition will occur quickly at many test centers, there may also be some locations where the changes take slightly longer to complete. The overall transition period will likely last approximately 6 weeks. The length of the examination day will remain unchanged.

The decrease in the number of items per form will be accounted for in scoring the examination results, so that scores on new and old forms will be comparable. Because of these changes in timing, as well as modifications to the test item pool and the processing load caused by a heavy volume of test takers, there will be a delay in score reporting for most Step 1 examinations administered in the second half of May and June.

The target date for reporting Step 1 scores for most examinees testing from May 15 through late June will be Wednesday, July 16, 2008.

Raff didn't write the questions for his section. I think Gauthier did, and they weren't bad. I just had to look at my test to figure that out though.

The mean (standard deviation) for the 196 students who reported a score for the 2008 Comprehensive Basic Science Self-Assessment (CBSSA) exam was: M (SD) = 339 (72).

Using the table attached to your results, this approximates a Step1 three-digit score of 175.

Interesting. Just like last year, my performance relative to the mean vastly exceeds my usual standing relative to the mean. Why can't I be a rock star on the tests that actually count? Here's hoping this means my step 1 will be a gold star on my residency applications...

Ugh, if I move from this apartment as planned, I will not miss the idiots upstairs who bang around like elephants. The previous occupants were a married couple, and the husband weighed at least 200 pounds, and I almost never heard them making any noise upstairs (except for sex and the crying baby....), but the 9-year old upstairs is constantly making a huge racket. His mom makes a ton of noise too when she exercises...

I'll take care of it for you.

Indo, is it true that you aren't allowed to pump your own gas in Oregon?

that sucks!!! i think people should be able to do whatever they want as long as it's in private and not intruding on somebody else's rights.

Also New Jersey. And they have the cheapest gas in the nation. Everything else there is priced like it's plated in gold, but hey, I like to think of myself as an optimist.

Indo, is it true that you aren't allowed to pump your own gas in Oregon?

nobody knows why though.

Assisted suicide: yes
concealed weapons: yes
liquor on sundays: no, and you can't buy it in regular stores...just wine and beer. weird ehh?
light rail and public transportation: yes, but not enough people use it but it is pretty f'in sweet.
homeless people: yes, yes, yes, yes
gay marriage: no, 53% to 47% ish.
OHSU's aerial tram: people in the neighborhood say no, OHSU says "yes, plus we are going to build 6 30 floor buildings to block your view because we make up a huge part of porland's economy"

Portland is odd but if you like microbrews, artsy stuff, and great coffee it is great. Oh, wine too.

I just asked my mom on AIM:
ME (2:18:48 PM): why don't they let people in oregon pump their own gas?
Mom (2:19:15 PM): ha. because the idiots in Oregon always turn it down when it comes up to vote on. dont know why
Me (2:19:35 PM): weird
Mom (2:20:22 PM): yea buncha treehuggers

haha, some kinda mystery. What is the reason in New Jersey, less muggings that way?

I'm so applying to OHSU for residency. When I was in Newberg/Portland in Sept it was fun. We drove into Portland every day, and we went to eat at Henry Weinhard's.

I love it that McDonald's has Tillamook ice cream.

concealed weapons: yes
Everyone allows concealed weapons except Illinois and Wisconsin. Some states place further restrictions on them, but IL and WI are the only ones I know of that outright ban them. Oh, and DC completely banned handguns, which has made it a very safe and murder-free city.

I've never talked to my mom on AIM. I either forgot my AIM password or it deleted my account, but i haven't missed it either way.

I'll be in Oregon for Memorial Day weekend though, because my brother's getting married in Portland.

Cool. Hopefully you all will have nice weather.

Isn't the DC handgun law in court now?

Minnesota too. It was really annoying to have to go to a liqour store instead of just picking stuff up with groceries, but luckily my apartment was next door to one.

me too, regardless of its ortho or anesthesia. I think I would probably like Portland. Not sure about the weather though. I generally prefer snow to rain. Rain is depressing.

So when do you think you'll have decided? After your sub-I?

I hope I can at least interview at OHSU. The son of a med tech that I worked with in HI is an ortho resident there.

I wish I could decide after my sub-I, but for scheduling reasons, its too late.

I figure I have to decide in the next couple days. If I'm going to apply for an away rotation at Madison, I have to get my crap together soon because they start accepting apps in "early May." If I don't do ortho, I won't do an away. So if I decide now, it'll save me some work, and I can start changing a few things on my 4th year schedule on April 30th.

Honestly, I'm leaning a bit more on the anesthesia side of the fence right now.

Seriously? =(

That leaves me and like 80billion guys going for ortho from the class.

I heard I'm on ortho in sept with Charlie who's cool and Amit (who I've never actually talked to in 3 years). Still looking for the 4th at the Dert.

the Department of Future Crime will fix that soon enough, and Tom Cruise will kick everyone's butt.

Small amounts of snow are better than the perpetual drizzle of Portland's winter. Summer is great there. It'll rain once a month or so during the summer...smells good.

Mayo has an anesthesiology program in Phoenix if you're a fan of perfect winters, springs, and falls.

Does any one here have dental coverage through the school and how is it. I was thinking of getting it next year for some procedues. Do you have to pay out of pocket cost for most things?

There's a PPO that might be better than the HMO which absolutely sucks (I have the HMO). I've never had so much stuff done to my teeth as I have this year. All because my dentist wanted me to bleach my fluoride stained when I was in high school.

Oh, don't go with Wauwatosa Dental Group, they're impossible to get into see. I see Dr. David Toy, his office has been good with working me in as a med student.

So I went to Wauwatosa Dental Group during M1 year. I got an appointment within 2 weeks then. I have slacked and haven't been to the dentist since. I'm paying for the dental insurance so I should probably use it. Is it really that hard to get into the Wauwatosa Dental Group now?

I think when I had a cavity filled M1 year, my out-of-pocket cost was $27.

They couldn't work me in after my tooth broke, and I had a root canal. Just not a good experience.

I've had 2 crowns (here, insurance paid for ~50%) and a root canal (out of network, but the insurance paid for most of it). Copay for visits is $10.

I haven't been to the dentist since July, and it'd been a year before that. I really ought to go more often...

if it makes you feel any better, in the last 7 years I've been to the dentist once and the eye doctor twice.

never had eye or dental insurance before med school, so i kinda got used to going without.

I have had an HMO for the past two years and was thinking on changing this year to a PPO and add-on Dental. Does your financial aide increase with such changes? The HMO has been ok so far but i do plan on doing an away rotation during my 4th year and would like to have coverage where ever i am.

Your budget increases. There's only so much you can get from the government in the unsubsidized or subsidized... whichever is the good way to go before private loans.

The HMO paid for my $900 emergency root canal in HI.

I saw a new ophtho last month, but I really needed more contacts, and I needed an active script to do so. If I had good vision, I probably would go 20 years without seeing one.

I'm kinda weird about teeth. Anyone ever see American History X? I would look at the concrete benches at my undergrad and think about putting my teeth on them, just for a second.

I like my teeth, and the idea of losing one/chipping one, getting crowns, bridges, etc., just weirds me out. So I try to go to the dentist often. My mom took us to the dentist every 6 months religiously.

I got a reminder card from my orthodontist too....

I have a huge tooth phobia. I hate that scene.

No kidding.

Hey, any of you guys got any ideas for a good bachelor party? My brother's getting married in a month. Not going to a titty bar or hiring a stripper/hooker. Anything else should be fair game.

No kidding.

You might want to start with drinking alcohol.

paintball. right up your alley, Jr. Commando.

and calling them strippers is offensive to me. we prefer "Clothing Removal Artist."

I'll second Splat's suggestion. My brother set up paintball for a bachelor party he was planning and it was a big hit.

Other ideas:
Comedy club
Brewery tour (there is a boat that will cruise around Lake Michigan and take you to 3 or 4 of the breweries downtown for their tours)
Booze Cruise on the Edelweiss
Fly off to Vegas for the weekend, just you and him and maybe another friend or two that can afford it.

No kidding.

I went deep sea fishing for one....pretty fun. Do a baseball game or something, dinner, and then hit some bars.

...just realized there is no "sea" here.
