Oh, hey, whoa, I'm not feeling old. Did I give that impression? ...

Say, if I end up going to some school other than MCW, can I still post on your thread? I mean, you know, can we all still be friendly? Or is this space reserved exclusively for Wisconsinites?

Oh, heck, I don't know what you said. I just believed whatever Prowler told me, which is generally a silly idea. It's funny about being an older student. I make self-deprecating remarks about my own age, and one of my friends used to tease me about it until he found out my actual age. Apparently he thought I was 30 and was a little startled to find I'm 43. He fell all over himself apologizing, as if it was okay to be 30, but REALLY TRAGIC to be 43. I still tease him about that.

Well, sure, you can post here if you want. We can feel sorry for each other during each other's exam weeks.

I don't think I can give my table a name. All I know is that I spent most of the time alternating between cringing and doing a stand-up comedy routine.

I was one of the designated dissectors for my group. No stand up comedians in my group -- 2 orthopod kids though.

I was both a designated dissector and a stand-up comic... I loved my anatomy group. I'm very sad I won't be sitting with them at graduation.

I think there's plenty of affordable housing in Wauwatosa if you know where to look...otherwise Brookfield and New Berlin have great places for very reasonable prices. If you're looking to buy, I can write another post about that.

I am definitely looking to buy either a condo/townhouse or single family home. However, a bunch of the affordable condos I saw on the internet seem to be retirement homes converted into condos. I also want to locate somewhere that I feel safe and the police department doesn't offer free bars for your windows (West Allis). Any advice about purchasing a home would be GREATLY appreciated 🙂

Let's see....sounds like you already have done some research, so you probably already know that most houses in Wauwatosa are WAYYY overpriced. I lived in a duplex in Tosa last year in a neighborhood where most of the houses were built in the '40s - very beautiful homes, but at least the one we were in was showing its age in the form of skyrocketing heating bills because it was so drafty. A neighbor's house went on the market for $450,000 and I was shocked that they would even consider asking that much for it.

Brookfield and Elm Grove are very nice and safe, although you might run into pricing problems out there as well. In terms of getting more house for your money, you may have to go a little bit further away from school. Waukesha and especially New Berlin will probably have some really great places for reasonable prices. You could also try Pewaukee, which wouldn't be too far west to make the commute bad.

My wife and I decided to go further south to find the good deals. We're in Oak Creek now, and feel like we got a great house (3br, 2bath, built in 1999) for a price that would have gotten us a piece of junk house elsewhere. I don't know if I'd recommend Oak Creek for a first year if they're from an area where they aren't used to dealing with traffic, because the commute would suck during first year if you don't like having delays. Other towns down here wouldn't have such bad traffic, though (or at least have viable alternative routes when the bypass is backed up.) Have you checked out Greenfield, Greendale, Hales Corners, or Franklin?

I would recommend going west or south of school, rather than north. Traffic sucks coming in on southbound 45 in the morning.

I don't know much about condos, since we didn't really look for them. I know there's another M2 here in Oak Creek who has a condo. Are you looking for a stand alone condo, or more like an apartment building where you own your unit? You'll probably find much more of the latter, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing depending on the setup of the complex (don't want upstairs/downstairs neighbors).

Don't completely discount West Allis yet. I have a friend who owns a condo near 102nd and Lincoln, and he hasn't had any concerns about safety whatsoever. As a matter of fact, I will ask him what he thinks of the area and get back to you. If there's a condo available in his complex I would definitely recommend you take a look. In general, the further west you go in West Allis and Wauwatosa, the safer the neighborhoods.

Let me know if you have specific questions...I'm happy to answer what I can. Have you owned a home before, or are you a first time buyer?

See, that's the funny thing about Milwaukee. The quality of the neighborhood can change in just a few blocks, and as long as the bad part is not on your commute, it's absolutely no big deal. I live in Milwaukee just south of Bluemound road, near an iffy-looking convenience store that seems to sell nothing but booze. But I've never had a suspicious character walk down my block and the neighborhood is very, very quiet and there are kids in the area.

I lived in Whitefish Bay before med school, a VERY nice area, but housing prices were very high. They dropped precipitiously a few blocks over in Glendale, partly because the schools are not as good, and partly because it's -gasp-GLENDALE!

You really just have to drive around, ask the neighbors, and use your gut. The ads and the stats don't give you a good picture at all.

What should i expevt from the admissions office from now on and when? Also, what do you guys/gals advice i should do med school...like how can i get the list of req. books and is there any kind of pre matric program at the world renowned MCW!!!

Thanks!
Also, what year is gonna be the toughest... Yr 1 or yr 3?

Why only the choice between M1 and M3 year? M2 is not only a lot harder than M1 year, it's also more aggravating.

There is no list of required books online or anything. I wouldn't go out and buy any until you got here anyway and saw if your big sib has stuff for you.

don't worry about any books yet. seriously. the only books you'll absolutely want to have for sure are Netter's Atlas of Anatomy and...well...that's it. There's other books that are either highly recommended or "required" but Netters was the only book first year that I used consistenly. Otherwise, wait until you start your classes and then hit hte bookstore to find out which books are right for you (they will match amazon.com prices)

expect a letter from the biochem department this summer telling you to start reviewing. Don't. Trust me.

Just enjoy what little time you have left. Don't fret about med school until you get here, because there will be plenty of fretting once you do.

Year 2 sucks the most.

year 2

year 3 = easy and fun

actually, this is really a funny story. maybe only funny to us M2s and M3s that have already suffered M2 year.

I was at the VA with my group doing H&Ps on some vets. we came back to a workroom to finish up some stuff and an M3 was in there. He asked out second year was going and we all naturally groined and indicated how much it sucks. He then made allusions to the fact that M3 year sucks so much and how much he hates it.

So we become very confused and suddenly scared.
Then he points out that he wants to be a pathologist and made a comment about not liking doing clinical stuff.

ahhh.....so i guess unless any of us are budding pathologists, we're probably going to enjoy 3rd year.

oh, maybe the M3s can shed some light on the pen situation. Do you often lose pens to residents and attendings?

Was it Scott Kantola? If not... who was it? Hmm... and you groined? That sounds inappropriate.

I have lost no pens... in fact, my attending gave me a red pen the other day. Nice one, too.

The only ones Splat would ask for it back would be the surgeons (probably also refers to them as GOMERs).

😕 Are we operating on the same definition of GOMER? I think I understand the reference, but I might be confused as to what you mean.

Probably only if you don't have the balls to ask them for it back when they start to walk away with it.

i have a feeling my balls might be what get me into trouble with them next year.

CarpeDiem,
Here's what my friend had to say about West Allis...pretty much confirms my thoughts:

Andy's buddy said:
Andy, there certainly are some areas of West Allis that are not so great.....but the same can be said for other suburbs, Wauwatosa, etc.

I think that the general area that I am in is just fine. It seems that the further east you go, the worse it gets. I've lived there almost two months and I have yet to see anything that concerns me.

Overall, I love the location because of the quick freeway access and the proximity to Hwy 100 and all of the restaurants/grocery stores/whatever you need.....I also like the fact that 102nd street is pretty quiet.

Timbo (ed: our police officer buddy)could probably tell you more about which areas of West Allis are better and which are worse. Also, I have not seen any bars over windows.

I do not know for sure if there are any condos for sale in my complex, but I think there probably are because some of our condo board members are stepping down, and I believe it is because they are moving......You can tell your med buddy that the condo complex is called Biwer's Woods Condominiums.....If he has a real estate agent or when he gets one he/she can easily tell him if there are any units for sale.

Nah, you have such a good sense of humor - all you have to do is rib them a little bit about trying to steal your pen and they won't be able to say jack **** about it.

you'd be surprised....you weren't at the last COPs meeting. I have more of my dad in me than I realized, and when I get agitated, I start to push back a little bit.

story please (just the basics if you don't wanna type a lot)

so i wanna assume that the attendings are a little bit laid back and accomodating!

Thanks! and so i shud not expect much except the biochem letter?

btw, jmtanes lives in West Allis - he and his wife bought a house there. as far as I can tell, he likes it. 'stallis can be hit or miss, I guess.

Yipeee, SDN-Space is back up. Prowler, is that your car in that picture?

Yeah, it's his. You should see how proud he is of "Da Flame"...cruising around the school parking lot in it.

if that's actually your car Prowler, sorry

There may be summer research, but no other prematric. program.

Unlike undergrad, you will find that ALL the required textbooks are on reserve in the library! YAY! Also, you can often check out the previous edition for a month at a time and renew it all semester, which I did with the anatomy text.

okay, let me be clear. I love seeing patients and all of the clinical stuff. That makes this year spectacularly easy for me, even on the long days. Splat, I have a hunch you'll love third year (given your background).

CarpeDiem,
Here's what my friend had to say about West Allis...pretty much confirms my thoughts:

Carpe Diem,

Here's my police officer friend Tim's thoughts on West Allis...he knows the area pretty well:

Timbo said:
As Mike said, the farther east you go, the worse the area. As a general rule, east of 76th street is less desirable. Pretty much, the more east or north to the city limit you go, the worse the area. However, west of 76th, and south of, lets say, National Ave is just fine. This is just a general area however. The nice thing about West Allis, unlike Milwaukee, is that if the houses look nice, and the neighborhood looks nice, it probably is. Stay west or south or both and your friend will be A OK.

so, how about dat der snow, eh? just when I was starting to like seeing dry pavement again....

i'm from a place that doesn't snow, so i'm curious...does MCW close school when the snow gets really bad like i've heard a lot of schools do?

if i come here how do I prepare for the snowy stuff? I don't want to wreck my new car. do i need a paint coating on my car like I saw in that movie Fargo to keep rust off?

yeah, don't bother shovelling yet. blizzard tonight with poor visibility. if anyone is at school i'd recommend leaving before it gets too bad or staying there overnight (suckers!!)

They do NOT close school. All of MKE can be shut down with the "worst blizzard in 10 years," and we still have class. It's a professional school, the patients still come to the hospital, so we're expected to still come to school, blah, blah, blah.

I'm from where it doesn't snow, and the closest we get at home to resembling snow are they white sandy beaches (I want to go home!). Anyway, I've never wrecked my car in the snow yet. Ask a Wisconsinite about it. They forget how to drive in the snow, and all the OOSers are paranoid and drive very carefully.

well, if you don't get that tru-coat you get oxidation problems there ya know. i have no clue about that stuff. my cars have never rusted up here though.

generally they don't close school here. I can't imagine what it would take for them to do so. but we're more like a business than a school. because we're all professional. just do the following for starters: have a snowbrush/ice scraper in your car, and keep a hat and gloves in there at all times "just in case." some of us also keep kitty litter or a sand bag to pour by the tires for traction if you get stuck...say in a parking lot, like I did in december.

if you have a new car, make sure the tires are decent quality. the tires on my car wore down after about 30K miles and then they assisted me in sliding right into a light pole.

pratik is from the land of sunshine, peaches, and southern girls with charming accents, so maybe he can shed more light on the transition.

dammit ashers. you beat me. but that's only because my answer was more complete and well thought out.

i'm going to the grocery store to stock up on foods and toilet paper. better get some ammo for the guns too in case things get real bad.

Just Pratik is from somewhere warm? I even posted before you did, and you didn't mention me. Geez. I'm glad I didn't have any cookies for you. >=þ

I have to decide in a few hours whether or not I'm going to risk my life to go to church at 5pm. I didn't like it when I read this, this morning, which is why I'm not at school.
THIS WILL BE A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. IF YOU LEAVE THE SAFETY OF INDOORS...YOU ARE PUTTING YOUR LIFE AT RISK. TRAVEL IS NOT RECOMMENDED TONIGHT AND SUNDAY

I bought my car here, so I don't know what they do for rust protection. Mine hasn't rusted out (even though I'm incredibly lazy about getting it washed -- 5000 mi services!), and I haven't seen nearly as many rusted out cars as I do on Maui where the air is supersaturated with salt.

i'm sorry, ashers. I forgot that hawaii was warm! it's not that I forgot about you. i just know that you handled the transition better than pratik, who occasionally spent long winter nights huddled in the corner of my apartment begging for hugs and cuddles.

No worries, Splat. 😉 I baked zucchini bread last night, but still you're not around when I have baked goods.

That's a very odd mental picture of Pratik, I'm also kinda thinking of him whimpering. Was he near the slanted wall?

Aight, well, back at it.

School may not close due to inclement weather, but I can tell you that the library is pretty dead right about now. I'm laying around in my dress clothes (had to work Sat. Clinic this morning) on the couches in the library and the lack of noise is lulling me to sleep about every 15 minutes. Really helpful for my pharm studying, I have to say.

Luckily I realized that I had the cure in my backpack--an mp3 player loaded with loud industrial music. Trent Reznor just might help me pass pharm yet. 😉

Ask a Wisconsinite about it. They forget how to drive in the snow
That's just Splat. I can drive 55mph in 4 inches of snow and drift around a curve with almost no traction whatsoever. That reminds me though to check the tread on my tires.

If it does snow tonight, find an empty parking lot and do donuts. They're awesome. If your car is FWD, you have to do them in reverse though.

Sounds like me driving around in our Civic. I think I might star in the next direct-to-video edition of 2 Fast, 2 Furious: Milwaukee Drift.

Make sure you have nice all-weather tires. Drive through a car wash from time to time to rinse the salt off your car. You'll know it's time to do that when you pass a car wash and you see a line. Keep a small shovel and an extra set of hat, gloves, mittens, dry socks, and a very small bag of clay cat litter in your car for snow emergencies (if you're digging out of a slippery space, you can toss a little litter under your wheels to enhance traction). Get a nice long fancy snow brush to keep in your car. All will be well.

I grew up in New Orleans, but I've been living in Milwaukee for ten years. You'll be fine. It's just a bit of a shock at first.

GET WATERPROOF SNOW BOOTS, and a pair of water-resistant hiking boots for when it's not super-snowy but there's still ick on the ground. You'll like Wisconsin much better if you keep your feet dry.

i heard clay cat litter wasn't the way to go cause it can just get mushy and slippery and not be helpful.

I've never had to try it myself, so I am willing to be corrected on this. Sand? Plain old road salt?

Plain old road salt?

Also bad. Depending on the temperature, it will just turn whatever you are trying to get out of into a mushy, slippery mess, thus causing you to dig yourself deeper into whatever you're stuck in.

Sand is great. Also tar paper (put it down in front of your tires). I'll bet there are non-clay cat litters out there, but wouldn't know for sure as I'm not a cat person.

Hmmm, why did you move to Milwaukee, love? Clearly not to begin medical school, since you're not an MS10 (I don't think). Is this a happy story, or should I mind my own business?
