is this kind of like the end of Chasing Amy where even though we love each other we know it's too messed up now and it's over?

Either that or in Star Wars where Luke realizes Leia is his twin sister and that the time she kissed him and he lusted after her was really, really wrong.

wait...what are you trying to say???

No clue. I can tell you that I'm utterly excited for the female exam CER lecture tomorrow though. I might even show up!

Hey, guys. In spite of the fact that I've come to love you all more than my own children, more than my very organs, I've decided to withdraw from MCW. I got an offer from my second-choice school, which I've accepted, and I've withdrawn my application from everywhere else other than U of Washington (my state school and first choice). I was kind of sad to do it, but it's the right decision. It's been great imagining that I might end up with you all in Milwaukee. You rock. Can we still be friends?
you withdrew from the big H too?

I have a peds osce from 930 to 1230 in the STAR center... woohoo. Feel the fear.

what kind of things do we do in the STAR Center? do we get to use it a lot our first years?

You use it for your Medical Interviewing OSCE during 1st year, but not much else after that. I've been in there once during 2nd year so far for an OSCE, but some students also have small groups assignments in the STAR Center where they see patients with a mentor instead of going to that doctor's office. Overall, I think the space is sadly underutilized, but it's relatively new so that will hopefully be changing soon.

3rd/4th years use it a bit... it costs a lot to run it, so I understand why they don't keep it running full time. Overall, I'd say we probably get/have to use it just the right amount. 🙂

yep. i'll be doing my very first ever pelvic exam in there next week.

as the video we watched put it..."en guard!!!!"

I already made my first insensitive comment about the female exam when I described my reasoning for attending the CER lecture this morning: "I figure if they're going to make me mess around in there, I should at least give them every opportunity to show me how to do it right."

I sincerely hope none of you are in my small group. Yikes.

being a naive male that has never had anything to do with pelvic exams yet, i must say I was surprised about something, but I guess it makes sense...
i never realized the speculum is sorta placed, locked, then left there. I always imagined that you had to hold on to it with one hand. but honestly I feel a little better about this whole thing now.

then you should hold up a mirror to let them see their cervix.

I love that... get/have. That's dead on.
I agree that the space is somewhat underutilized, but I really wouldn't want to have to go over there more than we do now. I'd rather see real patients than standardized ones.
If you think about it, there are at least five M3 clerkships that use it (Peds, Medicine, Surgery, CER and Family Medicine), so the last week of the month at least is pretty busy.
Overall, though, I think it will be great to have the experience when Step 2 CS comes around.

Don means CPR, not CER. And what did faily do there? They must have added that since MY day's in family medicine, oh so long ago.

Oops, my bad.

Family is starting a graded OSCE in July. We were doing a "formative" exam so they can get it right for the c/o 2009.

If you say so. The CER one has me worried, since I haven't really learned the physical exam yet in under 35 min.

For the CER one, just know what is on your laminated cards, and you'll be fine.

All-

I'm curious to know in brief, very broad terms what you all think of Madison. When I was at MCW I sensed a lot of hostility towards Madison and UWisc, and heard a lot of non-specific derision of both. It never struck me as sour grapes, because it was always from people who had been accepted at UWisc but turned them down, thankful that they had received other options. UWisc is not an option for me and that's not what I'm curious about; but I would like to know what you think of the city of Madison. Are they really a bunch of wankers? Is it a question of social differences between them and the rest of the state, or is it perhaps a matter of perceived political ineptitude of the state government?

Sadly, I was waitlisted for the incoming class. 🙁 I remember reading that one of the 2nd years on SDN was accepted off of the alternate list, and I wanted to know if you guys had any suggestions about what I could do to let the school know that MCW is my #1 choice (like a Letter of Intent). Thanks!

I've been there twice. It's not a very big town, and apparently there's a guy on State Street (the street that connects between the college and the capitol) called Scanner Dan, and he makes noises at people when they walk by. Other than that, I know nothing about Madison. Oh, the lake was pretty. I don't really know why I just responded, except I just learned about Scanner Dan. He sounds entertaining.

Akpete and I were both accepted off the waitlist. I was off the OOS waitlist. Basically, I called to see where I was every day. At first I had to give my AMCAS number as ID to find out where I was on the list, but after a while, I just said my name, and they told me. They do notice if you show interest, so a letter of intent might be helpful. I had also called and asked Mike Istwan if I could start at my state school then go to MCW if I got off the waitlist, so basically he knew I didn't want to go to the 1 school at which I was accepted, and I was ready to reapply when I found out that I couldn't start at one that started in July then switch. He told me though about "noticing [my] continued interest in the school."

My choice over UWisc was largely because I didn't want to live in a "college town." From my visits to the city I always got the impression that it was just not the kind of place I'd want to live. I don't necessarily mean this in a "bad way," but the general behavior of the city seemed sort of immature. Having graduated college I sort of felt like I would want to live somewhere that didn't feel so much like i was always in college.

I'm not a huge fan of Milwaukee either, but I felt like the areas I would be living in here were less crowded than in Madison. Plus parking at Madison is a pain in the butt, and I just didn't really like the area the medical school is in. That being said, the school itself is freaking gorgeous. Very nice. I didn't get any bad vibes from the students there. Overall I just felt that MCW and this area would be a better fit for me. That, and there is an EM residency here, and as of right now UWisc doesn't have one. I wanted to be closer so I could make some contacts here. Finally, it's a heck of a lot easier to get to Green Bay from Milwaukee, which is handy for some personal reasons.

You just wanted to talk to me, Ashers, because I'm cool. I think everyone can relate to that.

did your tourguide say something aobut being accepted to madison?

Can someone pls say something about the board scores?Step I, II and whatever. is it true that it has been 100% for three yrs in a row,
is it lower than UW but UW has less clinical exp reputation?

Thanks

No. I went to the Chancery with my student host after the social, and there were lots of students there drinking and blabbing for hours. It was fun. A lot of people had bad things to say about Madison and about UWisc, many of whom had been there for undergraduate. Since I had always heard great things about the city, I was surprised by the general consensus that it was a good place not to be forced to live for four more years. But I don't really remember where I got the impression that it was so beloved by all. Maybe it was just from party-school people.

From what I've heard, students from MCW score right around the mean for USMLE step 1, although I've heard a couple of people in my class failed. Most people I've actually talked to about it scored above the mean (217+).
I'm not sure about step 2 CK; I've heard of a few people who have failed, but I think most people do fine. Same for step 2 CS.

i totally forgot another thing...3rd and 4th years at madison, they ship you around the state. you could do your family rotation in Madison, then have to go to Beaver Dam (40-50 minutes away) for IM. i didn't like that.

I was just gonna say the same thing. For me that was a big plus for MCW.

But UWisc aside, people seemed to have a real dislike for the town. Do you think that's just because it's too much of a college town? I mean, it is the state capitol, so there have to be *some* other things going on besides house parties.

"You have to be a speed-reader in order to be really successful in medical school." Fact or Fiction?

i guess that's one of my big problems with it. any town that needs to call in the riot police and tear gas every halloween is sort of pathetic, especially if the people there are proud of it.

as for "other things than house parties," I better mention that our former state attorney general was arrested for DWI!! In a state-owned car, if I recall correctly.

agreed. more important than speed reading is knowing what's worth your time to read and what isn't. different for everybody. personally, the 4 inch thick pathology text is just a bookshelf space filler for me. i usually stick to class notes unless i need clarification

That is one of the books I choose to read slowly, highlight and annotate. I've gone through more highlighters in that book than I count.
