MCW Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No, no, no! You're 100% qualified to answer this question! 😉 From your post, I found out that Normandy Village has garage parking. 😀 Thank you!

of course, I also got free "covered" parking whenever I scored the spot under the tree. I had to fight with the pediatric cardiology fellow every now and then for it, though.

i miss my apartment and Normandy Village....

I miss the trees...the gentle glow of the orange lights in the parking lot at night....the direct view of the swimming pool in the summer....

...but most of all, I miss being close to my friends. and my lover.

Sweet. I love fighting for parking spots. It's just that I'm never able to get to know the actual person/people I'm fighting with. I can always recognize the vehicles...just not the people. *shrugs*

Did you used to live in Normandy Village? Or did you visit there a lot? How do you like it?

I'm sorry that you're missing people and other beauties of life. I, too, shall kiss them all goodbye once July rolls around. Man, now that I think about it, I won't be able to spend the entire day geocaching like I did today. How sad. 🙁

BTW, did you decide what you're going to name your kitty?

I lived there for M1/M2. Moved "up north" in August last year. I really did like it, though it certainly isn't the best place around or the best priced. But free heat and water = good. Free pool and (average at best) workout center also good to have. Maintenance guys are nice and quick to respond. The place is run pretty well, and they accommodated me well during my moving debacle.

As for kitty name, the boss came up with "Chloe" which sounds good to me, though if we get cat choice #1 we may keep her preassigned name of Lara. Even though it's only one letter off from my sister in law's name. Which might be weird. We should know in the next day or so.

I did some geocaching in my day...it was a fun activity for me to go and do alone. I tried with other people a couple times and I found it really ruined the experience for me. I should do it again.

Free heat + water = very very good. 👍 I like. Covered parking is also good.

Kitty name is hard to think of. My mom's kitty's name was "Cha-Cha." My aunt's kitty's name was "Goodie." And I named my bf's kitty as "Mayu" (she's a grey-tuxedo cat. such a cute baby!!!) Gosh, I really want a kitty. Would Normandy Village allow pets?

I'm surprised you geocached!!! I just started today (beginner geocacher). I never knew so many people were into it. From what I looked online, there are a lot of caches hidden around MCW, too. I wonder where these people find the ammocans?

Normandy accepts pets, also for an additional price per month. I dunno anymore what they charge.

I'm hoping to convince the boss to let me make Chloe's middle name Hergenberger. Not sure it'll fly.

You can get ammo cans online or at military surplus stores; pretty sure there's a couple nearby. I have to stay away from surplus stores or I spend too much money. I'm already prepared for WW3 through WW7.

I rarely drive downtown. I get lost almost any time I go there, unless it's to and from St. Mary's.

All I know is the Dert's constuction and the Marquette Interchange's construction are going to be done the day I leave WI because that's how construction works. Wherever I move, there'll be construction.
St. Mary's isn't downtown! It's at least a mile and a half north of downtown. I don't think I COULD get lost in Milwaukee county. I know where nearly everything is...

2008+4=2012...

Hi all, I got my acceptance on Monday. I plan on being there next year. On what date do classes start?
Hey! Congrats!!! We'll be classmates come August :hardy:

I didn't go to my college graduation because the U of M is huge and I barely made it through my high school graduation where there were only 165 kids... instead I went to a Twins game and celebrated with many drinks... many, many drinks.

We totally sang "Lean on Me" at our graduation. Cheesey!! That's what you get for going to a small town school.

I was looking through the online class schedules and noticed that M-F is pretty much 8-5...do a lot of you attend every lecture or is there alot of people who don't attend and listen to podcasts

Other classes might be different. I'm an M1 this year and a lot of us go to class so we let the COOP die. Most everything is posted online. I go not because I find it more beneficial to go to class but for the social interaction. Otherwise I would feel like a hermit and that would suck.

😱 The coop died! I would be so upset. I think M2 year there were like 130some people in our classes coop. If class had been mandatory, I don't know if I would've made it to this point. I NEVER went to class, and had plenty of social interaction.

As for Normandy Village, I lived there too, and liked it, but I couldn't afford it anymore. I have a dog, and it was $20 extra per month pet rent plus a $100 fee when you move in (which I that was a nonrefundable fee, but I got it back with my security deposit).

If I remember right the underground parking was an extra $50/month, but they tried to get me with 6 months free so it would've been $25/month for the first year, but since I'm from WI, it wasn't worth the money to me. Being from GA, it might be.

The only downside to living at Normandy for me was living on the far West end of Wauwatosa, whereas most of my friend lived East of school, so nobody would ever come to my house.

I made this quick video with my digital camera today during anesthesia orientation. For those of you that heard about him but didn't get to see him up close on the tour, here's a quick 10 second clip of Stan D. Ardman's head.

He blinks, breathes, has pulses all over, and his pupils can react. His tongue swells to simulate anaphylaxis, and he can go into fatal arrhythmias that respond to defibrillation. All sorts of awesome stuff. Apparently they can also make him bleed, have a pneumothorax, and cry (there are little hole near his eyes for tears).

The pupil thing is what really freaks me out.

AWESOME!

we were given a scenario today that the "patient" was Lindsay Lohan, who needed emergency orthopaedic surgery to fix a nasty broken arm with no distal circulation...unfortunatly she was hopped up on cocaine, booze, and cheeseburgers (the anesthesiologist did not like Lindsay Lohan)...shortly after induction of anesthesia, she went into V-tach and we had to defibrillate. Thank the Lord we got her back...we coulda been sued big time. This thing is SWEET.

co-op: you join a program that costs a certain amount (40-50 bucks per semester if I recall). Someone in the program is responsible for taking notes on a lecture each day. Using their own notes and co-ops available from prior years that appointed person essentially creates a set of notes/resources for people that want extra notes or did not attend lecture. Only people that paid to join the co-ops receive these notes. Basially each lecture has an appointed scribe that arranges the notes into something that helps people understand what was said or demonstrated.

As for the 8-5 thing, generally for M1s there is lecture 8-noon, lunch, then another lecture or two. Anatomy lab is scheduled most days from 1 or 2 till 5, but I was probably never in lab that long unless there was a test coming.

I had to save Lindsay too. Her pressures dropped way down during the scenario.

I was the attending on Lohan's case, too. I shoved my resident out of the way and brought her back from the brink of death.

I think I intubated that guy once. Is that the one in the star center?

Our class has like 40 people left in the coop. They got really ****ty last term- people wouldn't even change the date or name on previous year's coop.

Yeah, you need to at least do that, as well as make sure that the slide numbers correlate with what's written there. I tend to re-write the whole thing unless it was a really good one.

Yeah, it is relatively expensive. 😳 So, I suddenly had this random idea about getting a condo instead of renting an apartment for 4 years. However, I have no clue where to start since I'm not too bright with property value/ morgage/ cost/ availability/ etc. Does anyone own a condo here? If so, any insights? It seemed like a brilliant idea at first, but I could be waaaay wrong.

Wow! That thing is neat and creepy at the same time! I can't wait to play with that...

mmmm. cheeseburgers... anyway, when during the med school years do students get to play with these neat toys? do you have to set an appointment? also, do you need to have a faculty with you when you play with them?

does everyone who join co-op have to take on the role of a scribe at least one? or can you join the co-op, take advantage of the notes, and never have to be a scribe?

Stan's not actually as cool as he should be. You play with Stan for part of 1 day during 1 rotation learning how to intubate and anesthesia drug effects.

You have to do some job for coops -- writer, distributor, officer.

I didn't use coops because I don't trust people to take notes for me. I attended lectures anyway, and if there was something to be clarified, I usually used a book.

🙂Do you all think that MCW is interviewing now just for waitlist positions? I

As of last week, the class was not full. I can't speak to how last week's interviews went.

It may be different this year, but I interviewed in early Feb and got my acceptance letter within a few weeks without ever being waitlisted.

Attention 2012ers!

I may be looking for a roommate for next year.

I live in a lower duplex with hardwood floors, plenty of furniture, nice-sized closets, shared full basement, washer/dryer. 2 bedroom plus a shared study. Rent is $775 a month total, so $387.50 split. Gas, electric, and phone/Internet an additional $100ish.

Downsides? NO covered parking; the apartment is on the drafty side and the landlady may or may not replace the windows this summer; the landlady does NOT shovel the driveway--instead we split that with the upstairs neighbors. This apartment is probably not a good idea for someone who has never lived in snow country before, because the transition to Wisconsin winters will be too much of a shock.

Upsides? I am a VERY NICE roommate.

You've got a nice apartment...well, if it is just like the one above it. Good location too.

Mine has an addition on the back that is my bedroom (the upstairs apartment's balcony). This leaves the other two bedrooms as a bedroom and a study. (The study is also the hallway to my bedroom, so it's not realistic as a third bedroom).

i want to move now! hehehe 😛

I want to move, too!!! 😀 But I guess I need to save up a lot of money before I go up there.

BTW, are there any specific specs that MCW requires for a laptop/desktop? I need to purchase a new laptop since my laptop is 6 yrs. old.

Oh. Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!!! *muah* 😍

Currently remote access to the Virtual Microscope you'll use to study Cell and Tissue Biology works on Windows, not Mac, and I'm not 100% certain it works with Vista, though I'm hoping it would by a year from now. There are no required specifications that I know of. Writeups are typically turned in in Word format.

I would definitely recommend getting a relatively cheap laptop. Laptops have significantly diminishing returns on the amount of money you put into them, and a lot of my class immediately went for the most stylish laptops, which incidentally cost about twice as much as what they could have gotten by with. You can get something pretty decent for as low as $500 these days. Here's a Lenovo for $650 - http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...-category-id=0188068B103A4927AECCDEF5D8F0C043

Macs look pretty, and they sure have their fanboys, but you pay a lot more for the name.

I heart my Mac. Plus, I've dropped it a bunch of times, and it still functions.

I really have nothing substantive to add. I'm tired.

Hey All,

I've been hanging around SDN for a bit but just managed to find this thread! 🙂 I'm super excited to say it looks like I'll be joining you guys in the fall. YAY!!😀

P.S. Any climbers/mtn. bikers out there? Where do you guys play??

You might be interested in Devil's Lake. It's about two hours away from MCW, and it's a large national park with plenty of rock climbing, and lots of hiking trails. I'd imagine they have mountain biking as well. If you like indoor rock climbing, there's a pretty cool place about 15 minutes west of MCW.

Yeah. But I love Sony VAIOs 😍...maybe because my VAIO dominated over my friends' laptops/desktops in regards to lifespan. I've never encountered the blue screen of death. Yay!

I really thought about getting a Mac this time. It's pretty. And I really like all the artsy things you can make with it (photoshop, I heart you!). But then, I've never installed anything using a Mac, so I may stumble a lot. I'm just so used to Windows. 😎

There's a climbing gym in Pewaukee on Capitol. I don't know exactly where because I don't climb, but one of my friends went there like every week.

I mountain bike at Kettle Morraine occasionally. I'm nowhere near good, but it's a place to go, and they have advanced trails.

I loved my VAIO too, until Buddha (my large cat) decided to use it as a launching pad and flipped it off the table. A sony does not fair well with being smashed on the ground.

Hence the reason one of my cats had the occasional nickname, "Sporran". "Keep it up, Percy, and you can be a sporran."

Buddha can't help it... he's too busy achieving enlightenment to be bothered by the petty concerns of man.

He probably knew, deep in his cat soul, that the Vaio was ready to move to the next level of being. He was just helping it on its way.

Realized something today: the Korean restaurant, Han Kuk Kwan, has changed its name to "Seoul."

This important message brought to you by Jane, who is avoiding cleaning the kitchen.

So anybody got any info on The Fountains?

I was looking at Normandy Village on rent.com and found this seemingly comparable complex.

Um, my Windows desktop has Photoshop as well....

Unless you do a fair amount of video editing, I don't see a good reason to spend more money on a Mac, other than the fact that they look pretty (which they do). My computer really only crashes if I'm doing some very intensive operations (usually Call of Duty 4 😀)

This is the address of the Subway it shares a builds a building with. I assume it is the same.

Sweet, thanks Ashers! I am SO looking forward to moving to Milwaukee! 🙂
