I think it took me over a course of two days, because I didn't have my parents' financial info. The FAFSA took the longest to fill out, in my opinion.

I agree, the FAFSA took a good chunk of time. It didn't take too long to get everything filled out from MCW though.
 
I am almost done with it. I just need mine and my husband's financial information (I don't do the taxes) and he is at the gym now.... I think I will get it finished by tomorrow.

does anyone know if it would be possible to get an exam schedule or something for next year in the fall (i will be an m1). (would you say it is pretty close to the schedule they have posted) I have a very important wedding to go to and it wont be in the country. Therefore I will be needing to get airline tickets in the upcoming months.

I just filled out my FAFSA...my LAST one....

and the MCW aid form...circled "M4" under Year in School for 08-09. Freaky.

I dunno. I was working full-time when I did my pre-reqs so I didn't fill out FAFSA before med school, either.

It's not all that difficult for a single person if you've done your taxes. You know what you have and where your money is and you just look stuff up and fill in the little boxes. I don't expect to qualify for institutional aid, so I left my parents out of it.

Aaaah, a huge spoiler. It's too bad that by the time I can afford one, I will probably be too old for it. 😳 The car deserves a better-suited driver.

No, this isn't my first time. I think I started filling out the FAFSA since I started undergrad. I wonder if I would qualify for institutional aid? I really hope so. Me so poor~.

How is everybody going about finding roommates? I'd rather have somebody to split some of the bills with. And I get bored living alone.
 
I hate the FAFSA. I never filled it out in undergrad because my dad refused and my parents were married then. So I worked my way through undergrad.

This is the first year I've had to do the parental information on the FAFSA and thank goodness the last. I've had need-based scholarships the last couple years (very very small, but something) and don't want to lose them. I thought up until yesterday that my mom filled out a FAFSA separate from me. Didn't realize I just had to get info and fill it out myself on my form. Better call my mom cuz she's been harassing an accountant to figure out her tax stuff.
 
One of my friends is trying to get me to live with him in Glendale. My immediate reaction is that it's not worth beign that far away to be in yet another suburb. Thoughts from the wiser?

live within 20 minutes of school. your sanity will thank you. especially when you're on surgery in a few years.
 
I live close to school, but I drive up to Glendale and the surrounding and nearby area for church, Trader Joes and Costco. Since surgery started, I've been up to Costco 2x, Trader Joes 1x, and church about 4x. For me, it just seems to take way too much time driving up to that area, especially if there's any traffic, which there often is thanks to the Marquette Interchange road construction.

I love driving, and in college, I'd drive 100 miles to go to random stores in Phoenix they didn't have in Tucson (eg. Hilo Hatties and In-N-Out Burger), and when I have more time, I usually make it to Glendale 2-3x/week. I think I'd be really close to shooting myself if I had to drive there every day.

I live about two and a half miles from school, and I like that distance. I may be looking for a roommate, as my own roommate has found that the winter shoveling has driven her nuts and wants to get an apartment where someone plows the driveway for you. I can't blame her, but I don't want to move.
 
I'm looking for a roommate cause I found a sweet place downtown to live.

I couldn't go to sleep last night when I wanted to (8pm) since I slept during M&M (morbidity and mortality) and grand rounds (both wastes of time). So instead of studying for my surg final when I couldn't sleep, I checked SDN, but only for like 10min. 10 min of studying wouldn't've done that much.
 
I live about 15 minutes away (west of MCW) near the border of Tosa and Brookfield. A couple of things I made sure of when I was looking for a place to live: 1) I did not want to get on the interstate for school. 2) I wanted a simple route to get to school (Bluemound road is an easy drive) that would not take more than 20 minutes in good weather. The 15 minutes I do drive has taken 30-40 mins this year due to bad weather, but this is a rare occurrence (twice and both times it was on my way home around 5PM). The further away you live, the longer your drive may become during times of poor weather, snow especially.

I know a lot of people who live on Bluemound Road and they seem to like it. Most people though seem to live in Tosa somewhere. I enjoy being a little further away and near all the shopping and restaurants in Brookfield.

Does this "sweet place" have a name I could google? What's rent like?

hahah i am curious too!

I was wondering though how many of you soon to be M1's (i will be an m1 in the fall) are looking into living downtown/eastside.

I really want to live downtown/eastside because i think i would really like the social atmosphere since i am pretty outgoing however, I dont want to live down there if none of my classmates live down there...because i want to be able to go out with classmates after exams or whatever...but if no one lives downtown that would probably be hard to do.

i dont know if any of that made sense! hopefully it did
 
lol sorry if I got anybody's hopes up. Just go to rent.com and search downtown Milwaukee. The one I found is on 2nd and Wisconsin. The guy didn't email me back yet though to say if he has open spots. So it might not be so sweet.

I doubt this would be a problem. Most of the people that were interested in going out after exams in my class seemed to prefer bars downtown.
 
P.S. If anybody wants to know about the neighborhood around certain places, just let me know. I've been at Marquette the past 4 years and have a pretty good idea of what areas of town are good places to live/not live.

If you make friends with people, you could probably just make your place the gathering point before going out. It's not like Tosa is just packed with bars to go to - we all went to the Chancery for the first two blocks or so, but after that, most people started going to places like Mantra/Decibel, Buckheads, Lucille's, etc. Those are all east side/downtown.

Hi All. Some random, odd questions that y'all may or may not be able to answer...

I'm visiting next Monday (thanks to most of Chicago having Casmir Pulaski day as a holiday....) and I have a few questions. I want to bring my partner up to visit as well, so he can offer his advice. I've been told by Mike Istwan that he cannot attend the lecture or the lab I'll be attending (understandably. he'd probably be board out of his mind or freaked out anyway) but I was wondering if outsiders can tour the campus?

Also, I know the campus is wireless, but is it open or does it require a network key.

On that note, since I'll be purchasing a laptop come summer (I have to give my work one back at the end of the school year) does MCW prefer a certain platform: Mac or PC?

Oh, and give me reasons to attend MCW over UIC. 🙂

I can tell you that you don't need a laptop necessarily for med school, that being said, mac or pc doesn't matter.

in terms of Wireless, it used to be public access to the best of my knowlege. The computers in the library are open for anyone to use no matter what.

Reason to attend MCW: We're here, and we are awesome. Best student body ever. Nice big class size = lots of people to be friends with.

You won't be able to access anywhere you shouldn't be so I don't think they're too hard core about it during the day.

There are signs that tell you what the SSID is for the school's wireless network and there is a good mix of PC and Mac users that don't have any problems. The signs are in the library and on the pillars in the cafeteria.
 
The campus is open to the public basically. Anyone is free to walk around the open hallways, and the library is definitely available to anyone. The computers aren't passworded or restricted to anyone in particular. The whole building has Wifi, and the SSID is written all over the place. No network key.


I'd recommend a PC, for a few slight issues of compatibility. I think people have trouble with the virtual microscope and a few other things on a Mac. Not a big deal though.

Is there any organized way to find a roommate? Is there an apartment complex where MCW med. students tend to stay?

I'm moving from Michigan, so any insight would be helpful!

There's a roommate list thingy that's put out a little bit later in the year. For apt complexes: there's tons of med students at the the Reserve (it's more expensive than most though), there was a mass exodus from Normandy Village this summer, so I'm not sure how many are left there. Wilshire Manor is really close to school, and there's a bunch of people there and at the apartments right next door to it, but I don't know those names. They're on the same road at the school (Watertown Plank). I'll let others chime in. I live at the Reserve, and I like it (heat, utilities etc, are NOT included, which sucks).

Congrats, btw. Is your SN from that German movie Lola Rennt (I think in English it's Run Lola Run)?

Ashers - thank you for for lightening speed reply! Great info - I will look into all of those places. I was thinking about looking into condos too. I must visit within the next 3 weeks, just to get a better idea. Is the grocery store, and all important TARGET nearby? (<15 min. away?)

As for the SN! Yes, originally it was from the movie Lola Rennt, but somehow it evolved. My pseudonym became Lola, and I became a running fiend. HA!
 
There's a Target on Miller Parkway and Greenfield Avenue, pretty close by. It's a small Target, as Targets go, but it works. There are two supermarkets and a decent health food co-op on State Street, about a mile away from school, and a Sendik's (local chain, a little upscale) on North Avenue a bit further out.

I live in a lower duplex and am looking for a roommate, as mine is planning to move into an apartment that doesn't require the tenants to do their own shoveling. And there's the major downside of my apartment right out there in the open. PM if you want details.

A lot of the apartments close to school are duplexes and many landlords only advertise with street signs, so if you don't want to live in a complex it is helpful at some point to come out here and drive around if that is feasible for you.
 
The Target down on Hwy 100 and National-ish is not too far either and a little bigger.

I was surprised when I moved out here by how ghetto that Walmarts are. Out west Walmart is usually the nicer of that type of store.

Haha, yep. Even the Wal-marts in Brown Deer and Germantown are pretty ghetto, althought the G-town one is nicer now that it moved from its old location in the Falls.

Just out of pure curiosity (and you don't have to answer this if you think the question is dumb and pointless...because it is), what do you mean by this? I'm trying to imagine it... and my mind is failing me. 😉
 
Do you guys think that moving in October is a recipe for disaster? After my original roommate prospect didn't want to live far enough west for me, I found a couple of others who would be great to live with. The only problem is they have a lease that doesn't end until October. I can crash with them until then and move, but is it stupid to plan on moving two months into school? Thanks again!

Wow, that's a tough decision to make. During med school, it's understandable to want to live with people that you're fairly comfortable with. But, on the other hand, moving two months into school might add unneeded stress on top of school stress. (I win the "duh" award! Whoohoo!)

Now, I'm not sure how useful my insight would be, but oh well. Here it goes. If I was in your shoes, I'll probably go ahead and plan on moving two months into school. I mean, I would prefer to live with people that I would be familiar and comfortable with. And I think the one weekend (or however long it takes) of moving is worth all that. But then, if you're an easy-going person with little to no pet peeves (the complete opposite of me), you might be able to find other suitable roomies before school starts.

I guess I'm trying to say is: it's all up to you and how well you can live with other people.

Hmmm, now that I read over what I wrote, I guess I'm not saying anything too helpful. Maybe current med students could add better insights than I can since they know how things can turn out to be two months into the first year.

There's a bunch of targets. Samenewme is right, except I don't think the target near Miller Stadium/The VA is too small. It's not bad, and it's about 5min from the Reserve. There's one up on Capitol and 124th too that's nice. It's also right near the REI! (Yay REI!)

I liked that movie. I watched it in German during college. I also had my hair cut about that short and dyed some funky colors about that time.

Yep, totally agree with ghetto Wallyworlds, and they're not 24 hours. We used to go to them for entertainment in college at all hours of the day/night. None are super walmarts either. Boo!

Think White trash (seriously). I used to love Walmart, now I try to avoid it, unless I'm looking for a movie from the $5 movie bin for Christmas/birthday presents for my family.

Probably not a great idea. There's a lot of stuff that's going on in the middle of the year, and it's hard to move then. I'd probably just try to stick with a place before school starts and get it set up. Is there a way they can break their lease?

The Wal-mart itself is messy - boxes and products are often in disarray. The employees are often marginally helpful. I asked an employee yesterday where the books were, because we were looking for a map book. She pointed us in the direction of the books, but she said "Oh, I don't think we have maps." 🙄 Yeah, right, like Wal-mart doesn't have maps. We found them - they had an entire wall of them, including a bunch more right by the checkout.

The lines at the checkout are always longer at Wal-mart than they are at Target - you might be waiting a while. And the people who shop at these establishments are often, um, not exactly trying to stay classy.
