MCW Class of 2012

What about a discount for guy love?

Hey, it's possible. The WAC is one of those places where you fill out a little form and then they contact you with your own special personal price. A "marriage" discount is not mentioned, so I think what they have is a "call it whatever the heck we want" price.

Hey all -

I'm sorry if this has already been brought up - I didn't really feel like searching the 18 pages of MCW Class of 2012 for it...

The hard drive on my laptop just crashed so I'm going to have to buy a new computer before heading to MCW this fall. Anyone have a preference for desktop over laptop? Toward the end of college I haven't really been taking my desktop with me anywhere like I used to because I just use my flash drive for everything. Desktops are cheaper and easier to work on (in my opinion), so unless having a laptop is really essential I think I would prefer to go that route - any suggestions??

I'd probably have to pimpslap anyone I caught taking advantage of the marriage discount without actually tying the knot. It's one thing to have the freedom to do whatever (and whomever) you want when you're single, it's another to do both of those things and still get $10 off a gym membership like us married fogeys do. 🙁

What is the rationale behind a marriage discount anyway? My current gym gives a discount if you sign up with a friend to bring in more people, which makes a lot of sense to me, but what is it about being married that makes people deserving of a cheaper gym membership?

a computer isn't even essential, let alone a laptop. Just get whatever suits you best.

You don't NEED a laptop. I don't use one because it's a huge distraction for me. You can almost always access a desktop at school, so that's not a problem, and like you said, desktops give you a lot more bang for your buck.

I can only imagine this practice hinges on the little known fact that treadmills are, in fact, powered by God's smiles (and we all know how the big guy feels about marriage!)

(It's a good thing I'm going to be officially Catholic at the end of the month, otherwise I would probably be in big trouble for jokes like that. 😉)

The rationale behind a marriage discount is based upon a common phenomenon that happens to married couples after they wed. It is called "letting yourself go". It involves keeping a gym membership open but never ever going to the gym.

My guess, based on my experience with the slimy salespeople at Ballys, is that the fitness companies don't particularly care about rewarding one behavior over another because it's better for society or they like certain people better, but that they somehow figured out that they can still sell gym memberships without getting non-married couples a break but that married couples will be able to find some other gym that will give them a discount. On the other hand, this assumes that businesses act rationally, which sometimes they don't.

Ashers & HSTeacher2MD, thank you for the responses! 😀

Ohhh. I was thinking rural Georgia conservative.

Hahaha. I chuckled when I read this. 😛 Aaah, rural Georgia conservatism ... something I don't think I'll miss too much of.

My dad's uncle was a pastor in rural GA (well, northern GA near Chattanooga, but it sure seemed rural to me when I visited). I think I miss rural GA conservatism with all the lame choices the GOP had during the primaries (Huckabee did not count).

I guess it depends. I spent about three years in a little town where you never saw people of color at the grocery store, and where the faculty at the local junior college voted to strip the counseling office (the lone faculty staff of which happened to be the lone non-custodial African American employee of the college) of tenure-track status, and other little things like that happened, so I tend to associate ugly things with Georgia conservatism.

How accurate is the M1 budget estimation of $51,135?...for example, are textbooks necessary and do they warrant the $900 budget?...yay for 4 more years of living like a bum....

Here's another one for you guys- do we have to do the awful tape yourself interviewing a patient and watch and criticize with classmates thing? I swear I'm not an awkward person, but put me in front of a camera and I turn into a bumbling idiot. Please say no 😳

no, even better, you do it in person as a group.

even better, if you're talking about human sexuality, the class of 2009 was the last class to do that

no, just M1 medical interviewing, if you recall, when you interviewed a fake patient in front of your group, in person.

that and M2 psych, unless that's changed, when you interview a real psych patient in front of your group.

but most everyone is a bit uncomfortable in those sessions. except Doctor Funk, of course.

How big is a group? Are we talking public speaking size group? Last time I had to speak in front of a lot of people I did a couple of shots, worked wonderfully. Oh wait, this isn't a wedding reception, is it?

M1 interviewing you'll be in a group of 5-6.

Psych group you'll probably have around 10, if memory serves. For this one if you have a couple shots beforehand you'll probably fit right in.

The psych interview can be a little nervewracking, but the M1 interviewing group is usually pretty laid back and nobody is expecting you to be perfect.

Fortunately for me, the video that DoctorFunk, another student and I made for human sexuality wasn't watched by the group! It was bad enough making it.

I hate med school. Please kill me. =( (I feel like I'm back being a phlebotomist again. Where I hated every day.) Less than 24 more days of inpatient peds.

There is a final exam sort of thing where you interview a standardized patient and the patient submits a checklist to see if you exhibited all the desired behaviors. That interview is taped by a camera in the ceiling, but they don't watch the tape unless you dispute your grade, so you can pretendt the camera isn't there.

What?! They did away with that? How are people going to know how stupid and awkward it is for everyone to do such a long drawn-out sexual history.

Seriously, I think the most complete sexual history I have ever taken included the following:

1. How many sexual partners
2. Do you use protection
3. Men, women, or both?
4. History of STDs

If I remember from that workshop we were going into things like what kind of kinky toys they like to use and stuff like that.

Have you ever had to ask what kind of kinky plays they were into? I had to ask that to a sexually-hyped psych patient once. That's when I learned what "a water game" was. Aaah, good memories...

Noooo.... but that would've gotten props at the sexual history interview tape.

I totally got my Orange County accent during that taping session. I'm sure it added to the spacy college student druggy I was portraying.

No, you do it during orientation.

Unless your dad is a CPR instructor for the AHA, then you're good for two years. As opposed to the substandard Red Cross certification.

As a Red Cross instructor, I was pretty appalled by the shoddy training they gave us during orientation week. That was in no way representative of the Red Cross standard course.

Are you sure you don't mean watersports? Not that I, uhhh, would know anything about that at all...whatsoever.

I can personally vouch that Gimlet....

nevermind.

a water game? are you referring to water sports and golden showers?

oh, n/m, looks like Gimlet beat me to it

That's a 2012 group though. I can't join it. I'll be an M4 (hopefully, if I don't fail peds).

I just joined and am now shamelessly trolling for a roommate.

My favorite facebook action is when a med school couple breaks up and they both begin to take shots at eachother via facebook quotations and status updates.

A couple in my class broke up on facebook to see how long it'd take for the rumor to spread. That was pretty funny. I haven't seen what you're describing, that'd be amusing.

Well, for example, if a couple breaks up because the guy cheats on the girl the girlfriend will post 10 Gandhi quotes about honesty or something like that. Then the guy will post a Top 10 List called "Top 10 reasons why women are like diseases" or something like that. They think they're being subtle but everyone is cringing.

I prefer to break up with people on the swings at recess, like a mature adult.

On the other hand, one of the guys in our class seems to use Facebook exclusively for writing mushy love notes to his sweetie. I think it's adorable.

One of my friends just broke up with her fiance in a unique/"mature" way. I didn't like her fiance (he was just an odd duck), so I didn't care, so I was kinda amused by it.

This guy never got a job after the family moved to Newberg, OR from HI. So after being there for 10months, my friend was like, "Why don't you go back to Maui and try to get a job for a little bit." As soon as he got back to Maui, he called to see how she was doing, and she was like, "Um, so yeah, I think we should break up." She just didn't want to break up with him in person, so she sends him to his parents.

Newberg? I did about 18 years in that lovely town...home of the Tigers. Why'd they move there?

So, she suggested that he go back to Hawaii to get a job and he just does it? haha. It sounds like it wouldn't have worked out anyway.

Is this a guy who was previously dating another girl in our class?

I didn't even come close to using the 900 for books. Maybe over both years and for board review I'll get up near 900.

If you can stick to a decent budget you'll be fine. I live 100% on loans and I usually only have to hold a sign on a freeway off-ramp once per month. Living alone or doing a lot of shopping or having a 200 dollar cable package will require sacrifices in other areas but you've got to pick what is most important.

Glass half full: at least after living like a bum for a large part of your life you'll really appreciate being able to buy something that isn't generic or on sale.

The dad is a part of the mass exodus of MDs from Maui due to the state not approving another hospital. He got a job at the big health group thing there. I forget exactly where it is, but I think it's a catholic hospital group.

I think he was basically single before these two got all mushy, but I'm not sure. I gather most of the good gossip about who's doing whom comes up while people are out on the town, and I generally miss all that stuff.

Is there any good place to get furniture?
